4.0 out of 5 stars Worth reading, as always October 25, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Mavericks doesn't show off too readily what's new, and for the technically inclined this particularly an excellent look under the hood. The surprise: this release's most important improvements are in resource-use efficiency.

I probably didn't need to spend $4.99 on this since it's free on Ars, but I consider it money well spent on reading this as a truly lean-back experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredibly detailed and comprehensive November 24, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is a comprehensive treatment of Mavericks from a man with an encyclopedic knowledge of the Mac OS--and he knows how to write. Highly recommended.

Siracusa's reviews are much more than recaps of feature lists and power user tips; look elsewhere if that's what you want. He crisply describes what's new and what it means, with carefully curated links to previous reviews and outside sources to provide background and detail; it makes his technical writing concise, useful, and easy to read. It's like a New Yorker essay on OS X, which I mean as a complement.

5.0 out of 5 stars No need to read other reviews. November 24, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Best review ever. Although all the content of this book is available on their website for free, it definitely worth $5. This book made me want to read other older reviews by Ars Technica.

The only review for OS X you'll ever need to read, John is a great writer and takes time to explain every important feature in a way you can understand.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another solid review from John Siracusa November 19, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I've only known about these reviews for a few years, but now I make sure to read them before upgrading. They provide technical details while maintaining a good pace. This one was enjoyable as always and provided a ton of detail that I had not seen elsewhere. Thanks for writing such thorough reviews of OS X!

5.0 out of 5 stars Insightful as usual October 29, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Siracusa's OS X reviews are an essential read for Mac users, especially with Apple's new yearly release schedule. Siracusa doesn't just cover new features and changes, but he puts them in the context of Apple's ecosystem and history.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another fine Mac OS Review by John Siracusa October 24, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Yes, you can read it for free on the Ars Technical website. But, having it in ebook form makes for easier reading and makes it a keeper. At over 100 pages, it's a long and detailed review, but with easily readable explanations of under-the-hood improvements along with illustrated descriptions of visible changes. If you're undecided about installing Mavericks, read this.

Superb review, a book in itself. He covers all the things a user needs to know about, which are rarely explained in manuals.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good details, minding the details is difficult, John does it well
I needed to get an overview and also grok some of the finer points of the changes in MacOS 10.9 and chose to take this route. I'm glad I did.

While very informative and thorough much of the writing in this review is shaded by personal preference which I tend to ignore when making my own upgrade decisions. Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars Not for first time OS users
It should be a great book for old Mac users. Too bad I'm a first-time Mac user. Still, I enjoyed the technical analysis in this book. Read more
