The Code Reader for Heavy-duty Vehicles
Just as with cars and light trucks, the onboard computer systems built into modern medium to heavy-duty trucks and industrial vehicles internally generate a valuable array of diagnostic indicators in the form of diagnostic trouble codes (DTC's). Technicians, both on the go and in the shop, need an easy way to utilize the information these codes represent, and that's exactly what they get with the SPX 3418 OTC Heavy-duty reader.

The 3418 HD reader is able to read standard engine, transmission and ABS DTCs and display their corresponding code definitions on-screen, and is designed for use with both gasoline and diesel class 4-8 trucks. This extensive vehicle range covers everything from heavy duty full-sized pickups and recreational vehicles, to industrial vehicles like tow trucks, cement trucks, dump trucks, garbage trucks, buses, etc. In addition, the SPX 3418 includes applications for heavy-duty standard compliant construction, marine, agriculture, and other industrial diesel power plant vehicles. The 3418 HD reader comes with both a 6-pin and a 9-pin Deutsch cable for maximum vehicle compatibility, is battery powered for off vehicle use, can be updated via the Internet and utilizes a variety of important protocols including J1587/J1708 and J1939 heavy-duty standard.

J1587/J1708 & J1939 Heavy-duty Standards
SAE J1587 is a diagnostic protocol standard developed by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) for heavy-duty and most medium-duty vehicles built after 1985. Up to 1995, individual OEMs used their own connectors. From 1996 to 2001, the 6-pin Deutsch was standard. Beginning in 2001, most OEMs converted to the 9-pin Deutsch. Some OEMs still use the 6-pin Deutsch. SAE J1708 is an SAE physical specification developed especially for heavy duty vehicles (trucks and buses). The protocol promoted a standard for serial communication between modules with microcontrollers. J1708 describes the physical and data link layer and is almost always used in conjunction with the application layer protocol SAE J1587.

In the early 90's, the SAE Truck and Bus Control and Communications Subcommittee started the development of a CAN-based application profile for in-vehicle communication in trucks. In 1998 the SAE published the J1939 set of specifications. A J1939 network connects electronic control units (ECU) within a truck and trailer system. The J1939 specification - with its engine, transmission, and brake message definitions - is dedicated to diesel engine applications. J1939 is supposed to replace J1587/J1708 networks. SAE J1939 has been adopted widely by diesel engine manufacturers. One driving force behind this is the increasing adoption of the engine Electronic Control Unit (ECU), which provides one method of controlling exhaust gas emissions within US and European standards. Consequently, SAE J1939 can now be found in a range of diesel-powered applications: vehicles (on- and offroad), marine propulsion, power generation and industrial pumping.

This SPX 3418 OTC Heavy-Duty Reader does just what it claims to do. It works on various different equipment and gives you all the codes you need to fix the problems on the equipment you are working on. Once you have finished your repairs the code reader allows you to clear the codes so the next time you need to work on the same equipment you don't have to worry about the old codes still showing up. The code reader will also provide you with some code definitions right on screen. It also comes with 9 pin and 6 pin cables which allows you to use this heavy-duty reader on a more equipment than if only one cable was provided. This has been an excellent investment for my repair business.SPX 3418 OTC Heavy-Duty Reader

I bought this product to read the codes on a class 8 Kenworth truck.
There is codes stored in the computer that I can get with the blink method.
This reader would not see them. I contacted OTC tech support. I got and excuse.
I have a Auto X Ray reader for Cars. Works great. This one looks identical but
made for heavy trucks. Supposedly. Very disappointed

Could not even pull a code, let alone clear it. We tried the help desk and updates and were told that we couldn't be helped.

this code reader does not give very much info, i have used on fire trucks, hooks up ok but never seems to explain some of the terms it uses, the booklet is no help at all. seems to work better on the detroit diesel than the cummins. if i were to buy again i would go with the otc 3417 hd for $1200.00

The item works fine, but is missing an important adapter required for many diesel vehicles in order to read all available codes. Unfortunately, the adapter which can be purchased separately costs an additional $150 or so, plus shipping. That would be a couple of feet of wire and two plugs.

First off to clear this up if ur a driver or have no experience with trucks this will not help u at all. It gives basic codes, as in look in this area. So if u got a a bad nox sensor it will tell you hey nox sensor above or below voltage start looking there. Its not like dealer programs as insite or vcads or any of the others. If u know ur stuff this will point u in the right direction, if u want someone to hold your hand through trouble shooting get the dealer programs. I absolutely grab this before road test after road test trouble shoot with it and all. To me dealer programs are for idiots and they start from ruling out big stuff to simple which is a@@ backwards to me. But then again i call myself a mechanic not a technician! Awsome deal wish i could do more dpf stuff as in start regen from the tool and maybe cut out test but all in all i love it. Had it since 08' and its picked up every code no matter the truck or engine including allison and bendix abs stuff!

I bought this so that I could read all the newer trucks, freighliner, pete, kw, Volvo's and Detroit 60 series, it reads them all. my prolink is too old for the new stuff, it does a great job, it does not read any real time data for example like oil pressure or throttle position, but it does give a good description, if you clear all the codes and start the engine the screen will go from no faults to anything currently active. it gives the count and it shows you inactive codes as well it been helpful 5 times so far

Used it once to find two ABS wheel sensors that were bad on my Peterbilt 379 tri-axle. Paid for itself with that one diagnosis, as it probably would have cost me that amount in shop fees, driver's time, and truck downtime just to have a shop connect and tell me what was wrong. Also saves on roadside inspections as the ABS light is no longer lit on the dash.
