This tool works on belts up to 3/8" thick and 3/4" wide. You have to give the tool a firm squeeze to get it to open up the jaw that otherwise only has a 1/16" gap. I purchased this item for the purpose of setting the tension of my 2002 Prius's serpentine belt. Much to my dismay I could not use this product because it would not accept the belt thickness of 3/16 (.188) inches. Its maximum belt thickness capability is about 1/16 (.062) inches. This is far from being universal. The tool manufacturer's literature included with the product did not specify the tool's measuring capability but did warn not to try to use it on any belt which would not fit into the tool's jaw.

Conclusion: Don't buy this item if the belt you are trying to tension is thicker than 1/16 inch.

This tool works on belts up to 3/8" thick and 3/4" wide. You have to give the tool a firm squeeze to get it to open up the jaw that otherwise only has a 1/16" gap. This tool helps you set belt tension according to manufacturer's specs rather than "feels about right". Too loose and belts will slip or vibrate excessively. Too tight and bearings will suffer. Setting the belts to spec should maximize belt and belt-driven component life.

Gauge comes with a calibration certificate and minimal instructions. Feels like it will last a lifetime in the toolbox, as long as the uncovered dial face is protected.

I knew there was something wrong with the way me engine was running. I even took my jeep to a shop to do my belt tension. Still didn't feel right so i finally said what the hay I'm going to buy a belt tension gage just to make sure. Come to find out that they had it way to loose, My 1988 Jeep Cherokee Laredo 4.0L in-line six needed to be at 140lb-160lb for a used belt, and 180lb-200lb for anew belt. They had it at 50lbs, I have 290,000 Miles on that motor, and now i know it will last me allot longer what a relief. Thank you guys so much for making my year, and years to come.
