5.0 out of 5 stars Used 2 times, truck axle-deep in mud
I have deliberately buried my F-150 Yokohama Geolandar A/T-S rear tires in fresh farm mud--just about up to the rear axle. I used this mud pit once to test a 6000 pound cable puller (manually operated) + chains/straps/ropes.

I today tested the Portable Tow Truck pads. First time was very successful backing out--very nice. Second time a 6inch piece broke...

2.0 out of 5 stars Might work for some people, but didn't for me
I've purchased these things last year to keep in my car in case I'll get stuck somewhere during winter driving. Last winter we got plenty of snow in NorthEast and I got a few chances of testing these things by getting (unintentionally) stuck in both my 4-door sedan and an SUV (the brands are irrelevant, both cars have a permanent AWD systems). Both times these plastic...

Second time a 6inch piece broke off the back end of one pad.

Mind you, I severely test every piece of camping/travel-related equipment I have bought over the years. I want it to work when it has to work in the wild. I gunned the truck very aggressively and it is no wonder the pad broke the second time--actually it got partially embedded in the tread and partially wrapped around (both times I tested these pads). I had to gun it to climp out of the 10inch deep ruts.

This product is excellent and most likely would not have broken in a real situation because I wouldn't have dug as deep before using the pads.

Good show.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent product, January 24, 2009

I purchased two sets (shipping price is the same) and it is a very nice product. They come two tracks per, so I put 1 unit in each of my 4 cars. I've used it twice (with neighbors who got stuck sliding down their driveway!) and it worked really well. We just slide the track under the wheel and slowly it pulled under the tire and grabbed and out the car went!If you live in snow country they are a must. I'm sure I'll get a chance to try them out this spring in the mud.

Used it twice during winter to get my honda civic out of some snow. Worked better than others that I've tried...and still in one piece. Note: Picture shows orange, but mine was black.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works Great!!!, November 17, 2008

My dad's truck was stuck in the mud at his home. We tried this traction aid and it worked great. It was easy to use and his truck was out of the mud in just a few minutes.

Works as described. I'm very pleased with my purchase. Best $30 I ever spent! Gives me peace of mind that I won't get stuck in the snow or ice.

4.0 out of 5 stars Neighbors truck stuck on ice, January 22, 2011

I liked the reviews given before buying the product and so I made a purchase. The next week we got a wicked snow storm in Colorado and the streets were so icy that semi trucks were sliding back down hilly streets. My neighbor was spinning out in her driveway so I walked over and stuck them under the rear wheels and she was on her way! WORD OF ADVISE: Stay clear of the vehicle front and back because these suckers shot out forward from under the tires and came towards me like a bullet. So BE CAREFUL PLEASE, But otherwise, I hope to use them for us one day in deep snow and see how they work. :)

Both times these plastic mats were pretty useless and unable to get the cars start moving - no matter how I tried to place these mats under the tires (yes, I know that you must place them with certain side facing certain direction) the car's tires just "shot" them out from the opposite side of the placement. One of those "shots" physically damaged one of the (luckily a pretty cheap and easy to replace) plastic parts on the underside of the car. Now these mats are laying at home and collecting the dust and this winter I will do a proper thing by putting a dedicated set of winter tires on all of our cars and a snow shovel into the trunk instead of relying on cheap "band-aid" solutions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Saved My **** Tonight, January 13, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Portable Tow Truck (black)
I can usually stay out of trouble with snow and ice, but tonight I was in a hurry and got careless. I tried to back into a downhill driveway, overshot, and ended up diagonally across the entrance, with both (front) drive wheels spinning. I remembered that I had thrown the mats into the trunk when they arrived. I got them out, placed them, took a deep breath, and accelerated. The car popped out into the street like a champagne cork out of a bottle. I parked it and walked back to pick up the mats. The tire print of my left rear tire ended about three inches from the edge of a six foot drop off a culvert into a drainage ditch. About one more back and forth and I'd have been looking at major damage. Anybody who drives in snow country ought to have a set of these!

fortunately I haven't needed it to get unstuck myself, but recently used it to help untangle a 3 car accident on an icy incline. was able to help those drivers to extract themselves and clear up the road blockage so others could get around them.. very simple and does really work well
