Grade 7-10-- Cassie Martin lives a bittersweet life as the daughter of the "world's favorite comedienne," Abby Grant, whose story was told in Star Baby (Bantam, 1989). But 17-year-old Cassie longs for a stable, traditional family life, free from the phony glitz of Hollywood, and a career as a free-lance photographer. Although she loves her mother, Cassie resents being pushed aside for meetings, show tours, and parties. While trying to establish her own identity, Cassie does a little acting, sells some of her photographs to a national magazine, and falls in love with a young would-be filmmaker. References to 1969 television shows, the civil rights movement, and the Vietnam War are sprinkled throughout the story, but Nixon never creates a sense of that era. Cassie solves her problems too easily, and her success is a bit too rapid even for someone with great connections. Despite these weaknesses, Overnight Sensation has the appeal of a Judith Krantz novel--the characters may be shallow and the plot a bit cliched, but few look to Hollywood life for realism. --Jeanette Larson, Mesquite Public Library, TX
