I had to assist my 10 year son w/the gear assembly but after that he couldn't stop building the different robots. First he had to complete each robot then he took it upon himself to create original robots. Great concept, I hope OWI comes out with additional kits. Most important, I ordered on Amazon.com but this product is sold by a different company - Find Cool Toys. When I received the shipment it was a different model (7 in 1 Kit) I called Find Cool Toys and they apologized for the error and told me I could keep the kit for free and they sent me the larger kit later that week.

8year old son got this kit as part or a weeklong robotics camp. Took them a good 4 sessions to complete the easier model and all of them were outside racing their bots outside in the sun. Now he is taking it apart at home to build a more difficult model. I like the snap together concept without glue and the ability to take apart and reassemble multiple times. Final product is on the fragile side but overall I like the kit for the price. Adult instruction needed would not recommend for under 8years of age.

A good toy, smaller than I expected, but probably because I didn't read the packaging. Yes, difficult to put together since you have to assemble all the inner workings of the body prior to getting into any of the individual projects, but a great way to learn. Instructions are fine despite all the other reviews that say they are bad. All of the parts come attached to each other on plastic supports, which is good because there are so many little parts, but most parts require that you cut off the extra, "break-off" tabs for the toy to work correctly. Assembled it the first time and it did not work at all due to some interference between one of these tabs and the body of the toy.
Most of the snap-fits are very well done, but a lot of the smaller parts (pins and clips) fit rather loosely. Had to reassemble robot arms and legs several times due to loose fit.

Did you buy this kit so you could spend a few hours doing the following:
1) clipping dozens of plastic parts from the various frameworks
2) filing burrs off (to prevents finger bruises, and so that parts fit together nicely, no bumps..)
3) bag & tag all the parts for later identification (hopefully) as no plastic parts have labels on them (the framework did, but who cares once the parts are removed and the frames are thrown out!). Yet, the instructions call out part references like A-4 x12 and B-6 x2.
4) clean up the mess from steps 1 & 2

If you made it thru the prep work, then you get to build the gear box assembly. Many reviewers complain about the poor instructions. So true, they nailed it! This company didn't spend enough time with non-engineers to know how to create a decent instruction book. So, this critical assembly is unnecessarily hard to build. Once you get it right, the gears will turn smoothy and with ease. If yours doesn't, then something is wrong. (Play evil music here).

Next up: Test the gearbox and solar panel. If you waited this long to do this and it doesn't work, the instructions tell you to take apart the assembly and start over. Really, what a waste of time, AND that box isn't coming apart all that easy. If you are reading this and haven't built the gearbox yet, test it every step of the way!!! I held the solar panel directly under a 150 watt bulb and the gears barely moved at all. Right then and there I knew this entire kit was gonna be a flop. The solar panel is under powered for the job. I next got a AAA battery and tested it to prove my theory. Yep, works great w/a small battery, but that's not the point of this kit, is it?

Next up: More tedious work to apply a bunch of small stickers.

My 9 year old grandson assembled it as required but it would not work. His father checked behind but it still didn't work. Excitement for the gift soon faded to disappointment and the gift went in the box in the corner of the bedroom. A few days later I pulled it out, and using a AAA battery, tested each part of the assembly. My grandson joined me and we found that the hole for the final side was too snub for the "axle" and squeezed the gears causing the failure. I used a utility knife to carve out the hole and take the edge off the "axle". My grandson was thrilled again and played with it for hours and couldn't wait until the sun came out so he could tun the auto-bot outside.
I am not sure I would purchase anything else from this company.

This is an amazingly fun way to introduce robotics to your kid. I have spent several nights with my 3 year old, building up and tearing down different robots. This kit has allowed me to introduce to my son concepts such as solar energy and gears. It's also allowed me to show him how to follow directions by matching letters and numbers on the guide with the letters and numbers on the grid.

The parts are not perfect, nor some of the robots. For example, several robot models are extremely sensitive and will not work if the wheels are not lined up perfectly. Not a problem, however, since this allowed my son and I an opportunity to "experiment", to discover what was wrong. Also, the water-based robots are not very good -- the plastic is not very friendly to work with. Other robots, however, work perfectly fine and are a lot of fun to watch come alive.

Overall, the product is quirky, but when you consider how much it costs for what you get, it is a super bargain. It's a great way to have fun with your kid while introducing important concepts. I highly recommend it.
