Product Description

Product Description

As the smallest, least expensive, not to mention first fuel cell car to be powered by saltwater, the Salt Water Fuel Cell Car gives children a chance to learn about new forms of clean energy, while building and powering their very own toy: Just add saltwater and go! This environmentally and kid-friendly concept reflects the new, cleaner ways we think about automobile production and demonstrates first hand to children a more effective utilization of our natural resources. Kids will be awed by the remarkable simplicity and effectiveness of the toy. After activating the fuel cell module with a saltwater mixture, the magnesium metal sheet (3 sheets included) can operate the car for about 5-7 hours continuously. If you want to park the vehicle, simply take out the fuel cell module and rinse with tap water and dry.

The first time you add the salt solution this little car really revs up and speeds around the house. Once the fuel is used, the contacts and the plates need to be thoroughly cleaned to get it to work again, but still it is not as speedy as the first time. I suspect you need to put in a new plate which is included in the kit. Thereafter, the plates are about $5 for a pack of 3. So very good for a one time demonstration. Not a toy. Still, a neat little car at a low price. I lukewarmly recommend it.

This little car is a gas! It moves at quite a quick speed and never stops. You cannot leave the magnesium strip in the battery once not in use as it quickly corrodes. More strips are needed if the car is to have lasting value. It also needs a track as it cannot turn unless it touches something at it's side. The accompanying booklet should also include some of the chemistry that is happening for general information. This will increase it's educational value, otherwise it is just a toy.

Nothing like teaching your kid something that isn't true. Copper and zinc make a battery when they are soaked in salt water. you can make this battery at home with pennies (literally). I'm rather bothered by the overt dishonesty of this toy seller as he's playing on peoples ignorance. An actual fuel cell uses fuel like alcohol and produces water. The idea that water can be used as fuel propitiates ignorance. Teach your kids right; this car toy is a "magic trick" where the actual fuel is hidden from view (the zinc strip that is rusting away with every drop of salt water).

If your child is at all interested in science, this is an excellent toy. I put the car together with my 5yr old son. He absolutely loves it. It even drew more interest than his Legos and Transformers! The car is just a bit bigger than a Hotwheel car and is very lightweight. It seems delicate but it really isn't. It has survived drops off the table onto tile and hitting other cars from the "crash tunnel"(a three foot long boxtube the car was dropped down, aren't the boxes always more fun than the toy?). It is fast, but you do have to clean the contacts to maintain the performance. The instructions call for a flathead screwdriver and sidecutters. The screwdriver is only needed to clean the contacts. The sidecutters are to remove burrs or flashing from the parts. We used pliers and a razor knife. Otherwise no tools are needed, it just snaps together.
You are supposed to get 4 hours of use out of each sheet of magnesium (it comes with 3). We got about two before it became too corroded to move the car, requiring a new sheet. You do have to add salt water about every fifteen minutes and sometimes rinse the fuel cell setup, clean the contacts and start over to get it to work right.
This car was a hit for Christmas. If it helps, my son is fascinated with electricity. He also loves the solar toys like the bugs, train and cars.

Well, I was afraid that my 3 star rating may discourage some potential buyers from experimenting with it so gave it a 4 star rating. I ordered 4 of these, of which 1 didn't work out of the box and kids messed up one while trying to assemble delicate parts. If you are looking for just a toy, then you might be disappointed because it is not going to last very long and kids may rapidly loose their interest in it after couple of hours of playing. However, it's inexpensive enough (cost of a cup of Mocha?) so I would like to see as many kids put their hands on this - not as a toy, but something that will change their perspective on feasibility of alternative energy forever!

I believe that once kids see this in action and do so themselves (i.e. operating a car just using salt water), their perspective on alternative fuels may changes. Case in point, we were with a group of friends discussing cost of gasoline and its impact on consumer spending in this election year, my 6 year old son jumped in the discussion and said why don't people run their cars on the salt water and save the money and environment both! Some of the adults laughed at him and told him that cars can't run on salt water, but the little guy pulled out his salt-water powered car and demonstrated that if this small car can run, bigger cars can too if scientists focused on researching in that direction! I wish I had a camcorder handy to record the surprise-factor in the room!

If kids are given such small little exposures, growing up they will disallow the fossil fuel industry to brainwash future generations (like they did ours) by claiming that there is no other alternative besides fossil fuels to run our vehicles! A lofty expectation from a toy that costs five bucks or so, isn't it?

I know this car is very INexpensive, but really, you might want to keep your pocket change. We followed the directions to-the-letter and could not get the car to work. My son began to take apart the car and reconfigure it; after which, there was only vibration, but still no movement. By that time the 1 and only black plate began to corrode. :o(

If I had bought this on the street it wouldn't bother me so much. But being that I had to pay for shipping and wait for its arrival. . .I would say it definitely was NOT worth the money.

I'm waiting on a response from the company to see if we can get a few parts. Maybe it's not worth it, but I'd at least like to give them an opportunity to "redeem" their product's reputation.
