2.0 out of 5 stars Blade longevity not good, but item is durable otherwise
I have had this product for almost 3 months now. It was purchased from Bed Bath & Beyond. It works awesome for choppping and dicing garlic for me but when it has come to onions it's been a waste of time and I've reverted back to doing onion chopping by hand. The blade isn't sharp enough to go through the depth of a quartered onion. It leaves a lot of wasted pieces. I've...

While I haven't had the chopper long enough to test its durability, I have had it long enough to tell you how wonderful it is. This is one of those items you buy where you don't realize how much thought has been put into it until you realize how bad something like this could be. The blades retract into a plastic housing to prevent anything from getting stuck in the blades. A piece of plastic runs around the edges of the housing to prevent anything from getting stuck along the edges of the chopping container. All in all, I really really recommend this product. You'll never need to chop onions, garlic, tomatoes, etc. with a knife again.

2.0 out of 5 stars Blade longevity not good, but item is durable otherwise, April 8, 2007

I've tried many different ways to cut the onions in a way that this little chopper will work for me and it's been without success.

Cleaning isn't difficult but could be a lot easier. For cleaning, the whole item needs to be broken down into 5 pieces for cleaning. I wash it by hand. Seems safe enough for the dishwasher top shelf but because of the way the blades are shaped I don't think dishwasher cleaning is thorough.

It comes with a little scooping spoon. The spoon doesn't sit well in the holes that it is supposed to rest in and keeps falling off.

I'm not happy that it doesn't chop red/white/yellow onions well which is what I bought it for.

I'm looking to replace it in the near future. I would recommend another brand because the quality of the blades, the price and the scoop spoon being awkward sitting on the product have been irritations to me.

I do give it a good rating for durability however.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great buy - durable!, February 25, 2007

I bought this for my wife for Christmas after suffering for years with a cheap chopper. There were no reviews at that time to go by but it looked like a sturdy chopper. All I can say is that we have been extremely pleased with this product. It is very well build, very sturdy, comes apart easily and cleans up great! The rotating blades chop the material well with no effort on your part. We use it mainly for onions and mushrooms and it performs excellently. I would highly reccomend this chopper. Price is reasonable and it appears that it will last for years!

2.0 out of 5 stars Well designed product, just useless, January 9, 2009
This review is from: OXO Good Grips Chopper (Kitchen)
I really love OXO products so I was excited to get this. While it is well-designed, it is useless. I thought it was something I would use everyday, but instead I can't remember the last time I used it. I just think choppers like these take longer to clean-up than the time they save you chopping. A good santoku knife is a better investment (and cheaper).

Here's why I don't use it:
- It can only chop small quantities at a time. If you overload it, the blade will get stuck and instead of just pushing down, you'll have to begin pulling the plunger back up manually.
- Onions, garlic, and tomatoes are the things I chop the most. It can only chop about a quarter of an onion at a time, which makes chopping a whole onion very time consuming. Garlic becomes a very sticky paste when you chop it and with this you tend to lose a lot of the paste on the blade and bowl. It makes a mess of tomatoes--basically purees them.
- One feature is that the bottom of the bowl comes off so you can use the chopper on a cutting board. The problem is the bottom comes off sometimes when you don't want it to.
- You have to take it apart and put it back together to clean it. A knife just rinses off.

Again, I really love OXO products and I don't think it's their fault that this product is useless (that's why I gave it 2 stars instead of 1). A santuko knife just can't be beat. Happy chopping :)

2.0 out of 5 stars chopped...not really :-(, March 22, 2009
This review is from: OXO Good Grips Chopper (Kitchen)
I essentially got this chopper for my love of onions, but my hate for chopping.
I was disappointed when my medium sized vidalia got stuck several times to the blade like the onion was too big for it :-( I would scoop it out, but it would be stuck again. It finally did its job when I started to quarter the onions.
I tried it on garlic and ginger and some dryfruits and it did a good job.
Cleaning was easy.

1.0 out of 5 stars So disappointing, January 1, 2010

I bought this chopper after my Pampered Chef chopped finally died. I was extremely disappointed with the design of this chopper. Whereas the Pampered Chef chopper had a hinged opening so you can clean the blade easily, this chopper does not. As a result, the blade is nearly impossible to clean. Also, the chopper's hopper is very small. I can only chop small, pre-diced items, not whole eggs or tomatoes.

5.0 out of 5 stars My 2nd Chopper by This Company, December 15, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: OXO Good Grips Chopper (Kitchen)
This is a great chopper. I purchased one 3 years ago, by same company, and yes the blade did dull and I eventually needed to replace it, but I use it a lot. I use it very successfully for onions, bell peppers, nuts, and celery (perfect for tuna salad etc). As an example it can chop the firmest bell pepper from large chunks to near mush just by how many times you pump button. It is true that when you first put in a 1/2 onion (cut in quarters) that the onion will kinda jam up the chopper forcing you to be forceful with it. But this is true for EVERY chopper made. It is not an electric food processor. This is my 6th or so chopper of this type over the last 20 years. I do not find it difficult to clean, however, you may need a bottle style brush to get between blades if you let food dry on it before cleaning.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great chopper, April 27, 2009

Pros: Chops onions like a charm, with no tears shed! That was the primary purpose of me getting this chopper, and it serves it very well.

Cons: None, really. Well, clean up is a little bit of a pain, but nothing I can't handle.

Other: Not necessarily a failing, but I discovered it doesn't chop fresh tomatoes up very well, but that's probably because I'm still learning how to use it.

This chopper's cousin, the mini-chopper, is EXCELLENT at chopping garlic. I highly recommend it as well.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great design and quality, January 16, 2011
This review is from: OXO Good Grips Chopper (Kitchen)
I happy with my recent purchase of the Oxo Good Grips Chopper. I've used the product now a few times and thought it works pretty good. Huge step up from the Slap and Chop. So far used it twice and this is what I found:
I first tried to chop an onion and it diced even and effortlessly. Tomato was next and the result wasn't so good, made a mush.

Goods:
*Compact design.
*The press locks down to keep it small.
*The blades are sharp and the guard works well to keep food from getting trapped in the blades (The same could not be said for the Slap and Chop)
*Cleaning is super easy, and the picture intimidated me with too many parts, but has proven be fine.
*It turns well to evenly chop

Bads:
*It wont work with soft fruits and vegetables.
*It comes with a little white spoon thing that attaches loosely to the product, but seems useless. i think it has already disappeared into the kitchen drawer abyss.

4.0 out of 5 stars Handy, a little tough to clean, August 23, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: OXO Good Grips Chopper (Kitchen)
It's a good product, well-made. I don't use it all that often, though since it's annoying to clean (I'm not sure if it's dishwasher-safe, but I don't have a dishwasher anyway, so it takes a couple minutes). It's really convenient for chopping a lot of garlic, or a lot of spicy peppers (to avoid getting the oil on your hands). For anything larger, though, you've got to cut it into small enough chunks for it to fit into the chopper, which is annoying. Still, if I'm chopping 3 onions, I'd rahter use this than go by hand.
