OXO's Salad Spinner – A different "Spin" on lettuce

OXO's Salad Spinner was inspired by a children's top, illustrating how even the most basic products can influence design innovation. Before its introduction in 1998, crank or pull-tab salad spinners were considered high-end products. Some people even used the spin cycle of their washing machine to dry lettuce. The easy-to-use OXO Salad Spinner turned the tool into an everyday kitchen essential.

Fun Fact: Recently, OXO's Salad Spinner was turned into a portable centrifuge to diagnose anemia in rural parts of the world.

Problems Identified
  • Difficult to Start: Pull-string and crank-style spinners require fine motor skills and strength to begin the spinning motion.
  • Soggy Lettuce: Some salad spinners do not achieve high levels of RPM, leaving users with damp lettuce that has to be "towel-dried" before serving.
  • Cumbersome to Operate: Spinners commonly spin out of control on countertops unless one hand is holding it down tightly while the other is pulling or cranking.
  • Troublesome to Clean: It is not uncommon for lettuce to get caught in the lid of a salad spinner.

The Process
  • Push of a button: During user research, the development team learned that people inherently enjoy the action of pressing down on a button. Not only is it fun and easy to do, but it gives them a sense of satisfaction that something is working.
  • Use the force: Early in the development process, the designer actually calculated the surface tension of water droplets on lettuce. This helped determine the precise level of centrifugal force required dislodge the water and dry the lettuce without damaging it.
  • Weeble-Wobble: The centrifugal force required to dry lettuce without bruising it was so high that the Spinner had a tendency to walk or wobble all over the countertop. Because of this, users had to use two hands – one to pump and the other to hold the Spinner steady.
  • A Separate Piece: Our first attempt at a take-apart lid included pull tabs that held the lid securely together, but required too much force to separate the pieces.
New OXO Salad Spinner
OXO's Solutions
  • Get Pumped: The pump-style design makes it very easy for people of all ages and abilities to use without the need for significant hand strength or fine motor skills.
  • Dry Idea: Continuous turning in the same direction allows the Salad Spinner basket to achieve higher RPM than most other spinners, resulting in the driest, crispest lettuce possible.
  • Won't Slip: A combination of a non-slip ring bonded to the bottom of the bowl and the downward force from the pump keep the Salad Spinner steady on the table, allowing users to operate it with just one hand.
  • Easy-to-clean: The clear lid immediately signals whether there is leftover lettuce caught inside and it comes apart with a simple pull to wash thoroughly.

The OXO Story:

In 1990, OXO staged a revolution (of sorts) by offering an easy-to-use, high-performing alternative to uncomfortable and ineffective kitchen gadgets. OXO's innovative take on the traditional Swivel Peeler, complete with its pudgy black handle, raised consumers' expectations of what could be expected from household products.

Today OXO offers over 800 products, each developed with a close (some might say "obsessive") attention to detail. Our goal is to deliver products that maximize comfort AND performance, illustrating our mission to create innovative consumer products that make everyday living easier.

Ever wonder what makes an OXO product an "OXO Product"?

OXO employees believe there are two rules that should guide product development: First, every new product must deliver a significant improvement over the status quo. Second, the functionality should never be sacrificed to make the product more attractive – above all it should work well.

We had an older, plastic OXO salad spinner for many years and it worked great and was built with a very durable spinner mechanism. We "upgraded" to this version when we dropped our old one and cracked the bowl. Unfortunately we have had the same experience as several other reviewers here - the spinner mechanism broke after only a few uses. It seems that if the inner basket has any significant amount of weight (from wet greens) in it and you press firmly on the spinner mechanism there is some plastic part that snaps inside the mechanism (at least that is how it sounded when it happened).

To OXO's great credit, however, their customer service has been fantastic so far in getting us setup for a refund (not a replacement - we would just break it again I'm sure).

I have tried four other salad spinners, crank type, cord-pull type, etc., and have not been satisfied with any. Some slid around on the counter, some were awkward to use and one simply retained too much sand and dirt in the inner basket.
I bought both the large and small sizes in stainless steel and am perfectly satisfied. The weight and the non-slip base keeps the bowl in place and the inner baskets spin easily and have just the right sized mesh openings. I use the little one for de-hulling sprouts, which can ordinarily be a chore but is very easy, especially with the sprouts that have very tiny seeds that cling to the sprout root threads.
The large bowl easily handles very large leafy greens without crowding and I find it especially useful for removing the sand from split and coarsely chopped leeks.
In my opinion, these are well designed, efficient and attractive. No need to hide them away as, unlike the plastic ones, they will not discolor.

I had a plastic version of this for many years and it worked great. I broke it and it was my fault. I had no problem purchasing a second one and I thought the steel version would be an upgrade. I was wrong. They changed the plastic spinner top to a much cheaper non-flexible plastic. It broke the same way the other reviewers said theirs broke. This is not the same quality product I purchased before, do not buy this item. I wouldn't buy the smaller one either, it has the same lightweight plastic non-flexible lid.

I bought this spinner believing it would last longer than the plastic one I previously purchased, but it is poorly constructed. The spring mechanism used to "pump" the spinner broke after only two uses, rendering it completely useless. It seems to me the majority of the fabrication cost goes towards the stainless steel bowl, with only a few pennies for the functional parts of the spinner.

I've used a large plastic version of this salad spinner for years. About a year ago, I treated myself to the smaller version in stainless. It's great for making salad for 2-4 people, and for drying herbs and greens for cooking.

Shortly after I got it, the tiny "oxo" logo fell out of the central knob on the lid. Apparently, that holds the whole lid mechanism together. An email to the manufacturer was answered almost immediately and they sent a new lid in a few days without a fuss. It's worked fine ever since.

Gracious responses like that have become the exception, so despite the original problem, I can recommend both the product and the Oxo customer service policy.

This is such a great product. I used to have the plastic version and I broke it. I was so glad when they made it in steel. It is easy to clean and very durable.

I have to agree with the negative reviews on this product although I love the OXO line of products. I had an all plastic version of this spinner for many years and when I renovated my kitchen I thought I would treat myself to the stainless steel version. The plunger part broke within 3 months. I thought it was a fluke or that maybe I was pushing too hard so I bought another to replace it. The new one broke within 3 months. When I looked online I found that its a common complaint with the stainless steel version. I'm kind of bummed; 2 x $50= I blew $100 on salad spinners in 6 months!

I appreciate what OXO stands for - they try to make kitchen utensils that are usable for people with fine motor issues, like arthritis. And, in the process, they've produced some fine products even for the rest of us. This, unfortunately, isn't one of them.

The premise of this spinner is simple - it translates an easy motion (pressing down on a wide plunger) into a difficult one (spinning a bowl). So far so good. And, the spinner does handle even heavy spins very well.

However - while the outer bowl is stainless, the inner basket is plastic (and the lid is clear plastic), which eliminates any "non-plastic" advantage.

Furthermore, the center post, which contains the spinning mechanism, extends down into the center of the bowl. That post isn't only plastic, it's plastic with screw and vent holes in it, and no way to take it apart for cleaning. The interior clear plastic lid can be taken off, but that's all. (And, as an added bonus, the first time I used the spinner dark shreds of plastic came out of the post into the bowl contents).

Many people seem to like this spinner. If you are the kind of person who wants to thoroughly take apart and clean a kitchen device before using it, however, or if you're trying to live a plastic-free life, this won't be suitable.
