it is an ok mill. Steamed carrots are a little tough to push thu, but i ended up griding with with the coarse plate first, then the fine for babybood.

so it works.

We do a lot of home canning and preserving and purchased this mill to help with some of the chores associated with putting away pumpkin butter, grape butter, pumpkin puree and other foods. This was the only tool we found that helped get rid of the seeds and save the pulp of the grapes for our grape spread. We also own one of the large food strainers (Victorio or Roma type model) and this did a better job than that large, expensive strainer for that kind of work.

Things I really like:
--the "legs" of the strainer on the pot are coated with a rubberized surface that helps to keep them from slipping off the edge of the pot you are using it over. The handle seems to have the same coating and is pleasant to hold.
--also with the legs, they fold for storage, but I have found that folding them down around the sides of a 4-cup pyrex measuring cup also helps to hold it stable while using it.
--I like the white enamel (I think that's what it is) coating on the outside of the pot. Very attractive.
--Easy to clean. If I clean this immediately after using, I can practically just rinse it in hot water and let it dry and it looks great.
--handle assembly is cleverly designed and feels sturdy and secure when using it.
--comes with 3 disks for different jobs. We use the most coarse disk for pumpkin and apples and it works beautifully. (Note, we do take the seeds out of our pumpkins before cooking and straining). We used the medium disk with our grapes this year and it did a nice job, but a few seeds did sneak through. Next year we will try the fine disk.

My ONLY quibble with this piece of equipment is that it is not bigger. As I mentioned above, it fits nicely over a 4-cup pyrex measuring cup. I'd be thrilled if it was larger. The pot itself probably doesn't hold more than 4 cups. You *can* use it over a large pot, the legs will simply hold it there for you. It's the size of the pot itself I am talking about.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent food mill. This is the one!, September 28, 2007

I bought this mill after trying it out alongside the All Clad, and after having read the bad reviews of other high-end mills. Unlike the All-Clad, which has a fixed knob, the knob on the Oxo crank turns independently of the crank, so that you can grip it while turning without losing the skin off the palm of your hand. It's quieter than the All-clad, which makes an annoying scraping sound, and it has those awesome retractable legs that let you rest it over any bowl. With the All-Clad, you have to either use All-clad pots or hold the whole thing in your other arm as you crank away with that horrible knob. So far, I have made amazing mashed potatoes and fresh heirloom tomato Bloody Mary's. The fine mesh seive held back the seeds and skins of the tomato perfectly, which some mills won't do. If you like seeds and skin in your sauces, just use the medium seive. The disks are VERY easy to switch out, just click the latch. Lastly, the Oxo is cheaper. If you want a food mill, this is the one!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great food mill, November 28, 2007

After using an old aluminum food mill for years this one just knocked my socks off. Fits easily over a bowl or pot, stainless steel, does not slip, turns smoothly, has different size "screens"...I just love it. I make applesauce with skins, core, seeds and all, just cook halved apples with a little water, put the mash through the mill and the things you don't want are left behind. A definite upgrade, easy to clean.

one thing i am really astonished with, and why i give it a 3 instead of 5, is that they did not think it prudent to make a "scraper wire" on the bottom, so now you have to lift up the mill and manually scape off the food bits, so you can work at a good speed.

another issue is that the legs are mounted in such a way that the nicely shaped "i promise to fit in many pots" body actually does not - the nubs of the hinges are in the way.

5.0 out of 5 stars highly recommended, March 8, 2007
I purchased this mill with the intentions of making baby food. So far it has worked great for banana puree, mango and other soft, ripe fruits. I would recommend the product over the smaller, strictly-for-baby-food mills because of its capacity for making large batches, and for it's higher quality/durability. It is fun and easy to use, and it makes a great tomato puree for a most excellent marinara!

After using a Foley mill, this one was heavenly. I use it mostly for apple butter, and I find it to be really great. Here's why:

-- The fold-out legs are really sturdy. I tend to want to mill those apple skins until they beg for mercy, because a lot of the flavor is there. I can push down on this while suspended over a pot, with no problems at all.
-- The milling action works easily. Until I get down to the skins-only stage of the milling, it requires only light pressure to mill the food.
-- It's easy to assemble and disassemble, and easy to clean.
-- The three screens are great, and I can get rid of my potato ricer now, as well as my old food mill.

There are a couple of minuses that others have mentioned:
-- The capacity of the mill itself is not large. I didn't really have a problem with that, since I would just spoon in some stuff, mill it, spoon in some more stuff, etc. Since you can put it over a much larger pot, it didn't bother me.
-- There is no scraper wire underneath. Since this makes it quieter, and all it requires it taking a spoon and scraping it once when you are done, this is a very small minus for me. I suppose if you were trying to measure the amount you'd done really accurately, this would be more annoying.

The minuses aren't minuses for me, so I'm still giving this 5 stars. I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Too small? Not quite., May 24, 2009

With some trepidation, I ordered this food mill after reading the reviews that said it was too small. I thought to myself that it couldn't be any smaller than the traditional one-screen Foley food mills--the ones without detachable screens--and when I got it in the mail, I wondered just what the reviewers who said it was too small were talking about.

Sure, if you have one of the Roma food mills or the out-of-production Squeezo Strainer (and if you can get one of those, go for it, because they are all stainless steel and last forever) you can make a lot more. However, for smaller batches, it's so much nicer to have an easily cleaned, *large* food mill with detachable screens. Since I live alone, and sometimes just make enough for me or perhaps an experimental recipe that I don't want to initially make a lot of, this is perfect for my needs.

So if you were hesitating at the too small reviews, it is larger than the old Foley food mills. And much easier to clean as well. Go for it! :)

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent food mill, August 17, 2009
This review is from: OXO Good Grips Food Mill (Kitchen)
I have used a lot of food mills. Most are similar in design, but once you've used a few, you begin to see what works and what doesn't.

For example, I'll never buy another food mill that doesn't have a cross brace for the handle. (Like the first one I ever purchased) Without one, all of the torque puts tremendous strain on the rotary axle where it connects to the screen. The OXO Goodgrips unit has one. In fact, one of my only complaints about this unit has to do with the cross brace; they added a sort of 'quick connect' switch. Most food mills just use slots and tabs, and the pressure of the spring to keep it in place. That's an excellent solution because it's simple and it works. This switch clamp in my opinion is poor design because it fixed a problem that didn't exist, and added a moving part that will eventually fail where one was not needed.

A few other complaints before getting to the unit's good points. The feet could use a 'hook' shape on the ends to keep them solidly on the top of a pot. I used this on top of my biggest stock pot, and it just barely fit. I didn't have too much trouble with it 'wandering' but a little better foot design would have helped. Also, as another reviewer noted, there is no scrape wire on the bottom.

Now to the good parts. The screens (3 are included) are excellent. Some of the recently made mills that I've used have laser cut screens and they suck. You can't get any traction; the food just spins around. The holds in these screens have been punched out, and have some texture. The smallest hole screen was used to make tomato sauce this past weekend and it worked beautifully. The screens are also designed with 3 tabs that lock them in place at the bottom of the mill. It's a very solid design. The mill body is a nice gauge of steel. The handles - well, it's an OXO product - you know the handles are going to be pretty good. No surprises here, both are the most comfortable I've ever used.

4.0 out of 5 stars nice food mill for the money, August 16, 2008

I think this is a good food mill for the money. I looked at a Foley mill and played with it at the store, but just wasn't impressed by how the parts all fit together. Kind of had a grinding feel as the metal grated together rather than a smooth cranking action that the OXO has. The three different grinding plates are very nice. We bought this to make baby food and for making jams and home canning needs. Fits the bill perfectly. Very comfortable to use and would recommend this without reservation. The only reason it didn't get 5 starts is the white plastic coating on the bowl. If that was stainless like the bowl lining, it would be perfect.

Since it is the only food mill I have used I have nothing to compare it with. I have used it twice to make large batches of tomato sauce from fresh tomatoes and it worked great, was easy to use and was very easy to clean.
