5.0 out of 5 stars What a tool....
If you are either a beginner or an expert cake baker, this bent icing knife is one of the best on the market. Thanks to OXO, whose product line, has the best grip handles, the balance of this knife is great. It is the only one you will need.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not for cake icing
This tool may have some other uses that I don't know of, but it is just too flimsy for icing cakes with anything other than whipped cream. I think it's also much too short and narrow for the job, but that's probably a personal preference.

4.0 out of 5 stars Works well, has some flaws., October 2, 2009

I bought this because I, too, wanted a longer icing knife. I works well, with the exception that it is flexible. So, the frosting cannot be cold or stiff, which sometimes makes the cake more difficult to ice. It does work fantastically with softer frostings and whipped cream.

After mangling a number of cakes with a butter knife, I gave in and bought this for icing my cakes. It's perfect for the job. I'm not a cake artist by any stretch of the imagination; I'm happy if the icing is on the cake and the cake is still in one piece. This knife made the job SO much easier. You just load it up with icing and start spreading. It's simple and easy and the right tool for the job.

5.0 out of 5 stars more than an icing knife, March 8, 2011

This utensil will slide under cookies stuck on a baking pan without cracking or crumbling them. It will allow you to remove a small square of brownie or cake from a pan without breaking up the pieces alongside it. It transfers several appetizers or treats at a time. And if you do use it to ice a cake, the offset handle provides excellent control and keeps your fingers out of the frosting. It smoothes any topping to absolute perfection -- you will look like a pro.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Buy, October 9, 2008

I'm a beginner cake baker. I recently made my first fondant cake from scratch. This was a great tool for the icing. It is a thin blade as others have stated, but I think it worked well. For a beginner this is definitely a good buy for your money. I'm excited to bake my next cake and don't plan on replacing this with a better one. It works great for the job.

This knife is very easy to hold and handle. The weight is just right and balanced. I will order more of this in the future.

3.0 out of 5 stars too flimsy, October 11, 2008

Ok I bought this b/c I wanted a icing knife that was long enough to do the whole top of a 9 inch circle cake (what I typically bake). Unfortunately, while the knife is long like I wanted, it is too flimsy and flexible to do much else. I can't stir the frosting w/ it unless I want to do a weak job, I can't frost the sides b/c of it's flimsiness, etc. So, OXO, please make a more sturdy long knife if you haven't already!

Just finished up 10 dozen cupcakes and though it will take some practice to get the hang of frosting with an offset spatula instead of a table knife, I think it gives a more professional touch. If Martha Stewart can do it, so can I! So can you! Honestly, for a couple of dozen cupcakes, use a table knife. But if you do a lot of cake and cupcake frosting, maybe this would be a handy tool to learn to use.

4.0 out of 5 stars I use it all the time!, March 29, 2011
This review is from: OXO Good Grips Bent Icing Knife (Kitchen)
I use this offset (Oxo calls it "bent") icing knife (really a spatula) on a regular basis. I mostly use it with cheesecakes: the flexibility is perfect for getting around inside the pan to separate the cheesecake from the sides without cutting into it or scratching the pan (be sure to spray it with Pam first). I also slide it under the cheesecake to separate it from the springform base, and then use it to start lifting it off the pan. It's nice and thin so I can get under the cake easily, but I'd recommend using parchment under your crusts/cakes: because it's thin and lightweight I would accidentally cut into the cake sometimes, before using parchment. This Oxo knife is not strong enough to bear the weight of the cheesecake alone, so I use my hands or a wide cake blade for that.

It's also great for lightweight icings and frostings, as others have said. I've used it numerous times for whipped cream and even Wilton's canned frosting, thinned a bit. It's not sturdy enough for fondant. I do have a smaller one that has a sturdier blade, and it's great on smaller cakes.

If you are an active baker you will find many uses for this offset spatula, but if you are like most active bakers, you will likely need more than just one type to meet your various needs.
