There is a rubber pad that comes with this to stabilize the underside of the jar on the counter, that is very useful.

This little jar opener is better than sliced bread! I have had difficulty for YEARS opening jars ... small hands and a couple of thumb injuries have made it nearly impossible for me to unhinge the jar lids. You know, it gets really embarrassing to keep going door to door, looking for someone in the neighborhood to help me out. But, I ordered this opener and I could just kick myself for not doing it ten years ago. It is lightweight but sturdy enough to get the job done. It stores flat in the kitchen drawer. And, it has opened every single jar I've placed in it, from tiny ketchup bottle lids to gigantic peanut butter lids. No more banging the jars on the counter, running them under hot water, or aggravating my sore thumbs just to complete a recipe. I'll never have to ask for help again!

This jar opener This opever lets me stop relying on sales people to open all sorts of bottles...milk bottles, wine jugs, relish bottles, you name it. My hands lost a lot of strength. Now I can open anything. I liken it to my car which gives me independece in transportation. This gives me independence around my house. I can entertain without having to ask guests to open something for me. It's great. I live alone with my two persians and a parrot. So you able to understand how much I enjoy it. I'm pretty demanding when it comes to utensils. If you need something like this I strongly recommend it.

I ordered this jar opener because I have arthritis in the base of my thumbs and am not able to easily open a lot of jars. I tested it on a previously opened jar that was still giving me some difficulty, and I really had to struggle to open it. Using this jar opener requires quite a bit of hand strength, so it's not really a help to someone with arthritis.

Also, although not a big deal at all, I thought the color was black when I ordered it, but the one I got was bright green. So, I think the available colors are probably random.

There is a rubber pad that comes with this to stabilize the underside of the jar on the counter, that is very useful. I find that it works very well but my 95 pound wife still has troubles since it takes some strength to open jars even with this as leverage. It may be the best out there, but if you are tiny, it is still a challenge.

I had an OXO opener before and this one is different in a bad way.
One side of the jar opener is smooth and the other side has teeth. The one I had before had teeth on both sides. I'm not sure why they changed it, but it does not work as well one-sided so I returned it. I'll find another.

I bought one of these because it got good reviews. It often took several attempts to open a jar. Sometimes the opener slid all the way off (I suppose it wasn't perpendicular to the jar, or I pushed a little up/down instead of perfectly level). Other times, the jar stayed inside the opener but still slid out of the teeth. I finally stopped using it and went back to the old methods. I would give it more stars since it worked with enough effort, but I don't think a product deserves many stars if it's so frustrating it ends up in the junk drawer. I also didn't like the way it scratched up the lids.

Then I bought a strap wrench to fix a faucet (This is a real strap wrench from the hardware store, not something advertised for the kitchen). I got smart and put it in the kitchen, and it works perfectly. It turns so easily that I thought it had slipped loose the first couple of times I used it. But that's just how easy it is to open jars. This morning I used it to open the glued-shut lid on a bottle of nail polish. I was amazed at how easily that bottle opened (It took a slight push, but it wasn't hard at all). The strap wrench is a wonderful tool!

Easy to use, totally versatile, well designed, and you'll never lose the handy slip-proof disc because it fits right into body. Opens absolutely everything. As someone with arthritic hands, I love this gadget!

I believe the previous design (which we lost in a move) had straight toothed metal grippers whereas this important feature with the current design has a slight curve to it. I believe this aspect of the product DECREASES its functionality. I am ALWAYS struggling to have this device open jars easily, often when the jar finally opens it is with so much force that the contents of the jar (if liquid) will spurt out from the top :(
quite disappointed, actually.
