5.0 out of 5 stars It Works!
Always avoided buying Mangos because of the hassle cutting them. Noticed this tool on Amazon and decided to give it a try (although I did not expect it to work). The design is quite ingenious. The cutting blade is flexible enough to "hug" the pit and cut the fruit away. I would highly recommend.

3.0 out of 5 stars great when everything is right
This is a real timesaver for folks who do a lot of mangos. My only complaint is the mango must fit the slicers deminsions. The seed can't be too big (no way to know in advance) and the mango can't be overly ripe or the presure will smash the bottom and put juice everywhere.

Very minor nitpiks, but buyers should consider them.

4.0 out of 5 stars A long time coming, August 11, 2005
This review is from: OXO Good Grips Mango Splitter (Kitchen)
This little invention I just bought cuts out a lot of mango and a lot of BS. I pay about $1.50 per mango, so losing flesh in cutting the things up is like a punch in the throat. Mangoes are well connected to their skin and seed, making it hard not to waste or at least end up with a million little hacked off pieces and cut up hands.

I didn't give it 5 stars simply because there is still a small bit of waste, but given the stubborn nature of the mango, that's inevitable. Someday someone will breed a mango that just pops away from the seed like a peach.

There's a slight learning curve on the tool, but I got it on my first try. I doesn't look like it should work but it does. Amazing and rewarding the first time you use it and have two robust shoulders taken off the seed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Works quite well for medium to somewhat large mangoes, December 16, 2005

I agree with the earlier poster that this device allows you to make mango salsa much faster. Yes there is still a little cutting to get meat off the seed, but most of the work is done instantly and painlessly.

Pros:
Makes seeding a mango almost instant

Cons:
I don't know what I'll do when this device eventually dulls (sharpening it will be difficult)
It doesn't handle the largest sizes of mangoes

5.0 out of 5 stars Hairy pits, June 20, 2006
This review is from: OXO Good Grips Mango Splitter (Kitchen)
The problem with mangos is that the pit is well-secured inside the fruit by a pit with long, tough fibers attached. The pit is an inconvenient flat oblong, slippery under the knife. However, if you admire the "peach soaked in turpentine" exotic taste (and I certainly do) you might wonder if there isn't some way to cut out the flesh of the mango without a long, hard struggle.

This device is positioned over the mango like an apple corer, allowing you to cut the fibers around the pit and release it from (most) of the meat. While there is still some waste, and while mangos and their pits vary in size, this is pretty good.

It certainly beats my current method of mango preparation, which is to slice along side of the pit, making two shallow halves. I dice the fruit inside the hull and slice it off that tough skin with a knife positioned flat along the skin. I get cubes of mango, and then I either try to trim the pit or I nibble it as a cook's tidbit.

This cutter is faster by far than my old method and a lot neater. Big thumbs up to OXO for figuring this out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mango Salsa So Fast, November 19, 2005

Just what we didn't need was another kitchen gadget, but this one made sense and it really works.
Mangoes are becoming ever more popular and available at most markets year around. The downside is that it is difficult to separate the flesh from the seed. It usually results in a mashed mango using traditional methods.
The OXO Mango Splitter makes it foolproof to quickly and easily split the fruit while simultaneously removing the hard seed.
So much better for making massive amounts of Mango Salsa!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best way to cut a mango!, February 19, 2011

Oxo Mango Splitter
-Easily separates two halves of fruit from pit. Then just score the fruit so that the skin lays flat and cut fruit from skin. There is no better way to cut a mango, so until something better comes along, this is a 5 star product.
-Another reviewer noted when the blades dull, it will be difficult to sharpen. True. I'll buy another for all the time and mess it saves!

4.0 out of 5 stars Smooth and easy to use, March 19, 2007

My family eats a lot of mangoes but they are so hard to peel and get off the pit. The first time I used this mango splitter, my mother had already started peeling the mangoes. I stopped her about halfway so I had one slippery little fruit to manage as I tried out this gizmo. The mango was the small yellow variety and the splitter left a lot of fruit on the pit. However, it didn't bruise the very ripe fruit and left me with two large halves.

I recommend using it only with the large green mangoes or standard green/red mangoes. The small yellow ones have too small a pit and you wind up using a knife so you don't waste as much.

5.0 out of 5 stars FINALLY!, April 30, 2006
This review is from: OXO Good Grips Mango Splitter (Kitchen)
I was skeptical, but as a mango-lover, I had to try it. It's wonderful! I've used it four times, and have never had a problem getting it lined up over the seed. It slices close to the seed, leaving two generous halves to enjoy. Thank you, Oxo!

5.0 out of 5 stars MAKES EATING MAGOES SO MUCH EASIER!, March 20, 2006
This review is from: OXO Good Grips Mango Splitter (Kitchen)
We have loved mangoes for years and have been searching for the best way to cut them, and to get the most out of the money that we spend on them. Well, we have found it-the Mango splitter is it!! It was an impulse buy for me (I paid $13!) and my husband rolled his eyes when I brought it home, but now-he loves it just as much, if not more, than I do! There is so little waste and makes eating magoes fun and worth it!!

I'm a mango fanatic, and owning this splitter makes life a bit easier. But there's also something to keep in mind if you happen to buy this model. The blades are sharp, but if you buy a mango that isn't firm enough, they may not cut through the skin (and create a bit of a mushy mango when you press down).

The solution I used was to simply take a sharp knife and just make one or two cuts in the mango to serve as a guide for the splitter. Now that your splitter doesn't have to put up a fight with the mango's skin, it should easily finish the job.

After splitting the mango, you can also take your knife and cut the fruit (but not the skin) in a tic-tac-toe pattern. Flip that half of the mango inside-out, and now you've got perfect little mango cubes to eat as a snack or use in salads, no peeling necessary.
