Excellent steamer,

This is a well made product and a good idea ! The popup handle snugs down with a push so you can put a lid on the pot, then releases back up at a touch so you can lift the steamer without getting your fingers burnt. The legs are solid, not the flimsy folding type. The basket is extra large, which means it can steam a whole lot in even big 8-qt stew pots, but it doesn't fit in a small 2-qt pot.

I like the design, very rugged and well built. I especially like the sturdy fold-down legs. I also liked the design of the pop-up handle with slot allowing you to lift the hot steamer with a fork. I would give this product 5 stars, like the majority of other reviews except for one big problem. The telescoping spring-loaded handle design permits three handle-height positions: fully down, half-way up and fully extended. The problem is that my handle will not stay down. With a lot of work I can get it to stay half-way down for a short period before it pops fully up on its own. I can rarely get it fully down and then for no more than a couple of seconds. When I get it half-way down, it tends to pop up when it gets hot during steaming and shoots the lid off my pot. I have to fully remove the handle (yes, it's removable) before I can use it for steaming. I don't know if this is just a manufacturing defect in my steamer, but if you have the opportunity, carefully check out the steamer in person before you buy one. I really want to love this steamer.

Beware of the pop up handle,
This review is from: OXO Good Grips Pop-Up Steamer (Kitchen)
I bought this without a second thought on the OXO name. I have a dozen or so of their products and am generally happy with the quality. This OXO steamer is definitely an exception to that rule. I use this to steam my baby's food. Basically, I use a steamer 3-4 times a week so it gets used heavily. The 'pop' up handle broke after 4 weeks and it will not stay down in the low position. The handle is spring loaded so it basically useless at this point because i cannot put a lid on top of the pot. I would stay away from this product and go with a more practical steamer.

small for storage; large for steaming large artichokes in a big pot. sturdy and stable. well worth the extra $5 over most other steamer baskets.

The ratings already given to this product are the reason that I purchased it over any other model, and now that I have it in the kitchen, I can easily say that the rating is well earned. This is the first one I've had with a collapsible stem and collapsible legs, reducing the footprint when it's being stored. Of course, the handle is awesome. The compress/release action on it is really smooth and has the feel of a high quality build. The end, built to get at the steamer with a fork instead of burning your fingers, is one of those great "Can't Believe No One Else Thought Of It" ideas. Two other steamers have been broken in my house in the last few weeks. I'm not even worried about it. It's obvious that this one isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

Some missing specs that I needed...,

1. I would have given 5 stars if not for the unnecessarily long legs - 1.75"! Water level at 3/4 to 1 inch is usually more than enough for me to steam vegetables. The extra clearance from shorter legs would allow me to use this steamer in more pots.2. base diameter measures 6.75"; 10.5" in diameter with leaves fully open 3. 2.5" tall with FOLDABLE legs closed, without center post and leaves closed completely; 3" tall with collapsed post 4. 4.25" tall with legs open, without post and leaves standing straight up; 5" with center post 5. Pop-up center post is all stainless except for the plastic grip at the top. This is great b/c I don't like plastic to touch my food. However, I don't need it so I just unscrewed it and put it away. Post is 2.5" collapsed and 4.5" extended. 6. Otherwise, it works and feels like the other similar steamers.

I bought this for my pressure cooker and it works so well when I'm steaming vegetables. The vegetables don't get all mushy from them sitting in water boiling. I'm sure it works fine without the pressure cooker. I just haven't tried it yet. The vegetables cook faster with the pressure cooker. 3 minutes instead of 15.

There is a reason this steamer costs more than others, and it is well worth it.We eat a lot of steamed foods and this is the best steamer I've ever used. It is useful for veggies, chicken, fish etc. I've had MANY problems with blades coming loose from the cheaper brands, but this one is well built and more durable, so I have not experienced that issue. The legs can fold up, won't scratch non stick surfaces, and are long enough to give you plenty of water for prolonged cooking times. This is a welcome addition because many of the cheaper brands have short legs, forcing you to constantly monitor the water level else get that nasty burning smell when it runs dry. There is also a handle which pushes down for a low profile when cooking (so you can use a lid), and then raises to easily pull the steamer out when it's done. The only caveat, as with all stainless steel steamers, is that when cooking fish or chicken it will be a huge mess to clean up if you do not use a non-stick spray product beforehand. The meat gets stuck in the holes and between the blades and takes some effort to clean off by hand. This is dishwasher safe, but putting it into the dishwasher with a lot of food still stuck on it will only dry it up onto the steamer. Coat with PAM or brush with olive oil before steaming and you'll be fine.

Great steamer - but big,

This is a great durable steamer. Like everything from Oxo I love it and it works great. However - this is not a small steamer. It fills up my stock pot. The steamer has fold down legs which is great as it raises the steamer up quite a bit in the pot so you can put lots of water in without whatever you are steaming sitting in the water. Love that the handle pops up and down and screws off if you don't need it. WOuld buy again.

After 20 some years, I managed to reduce my old steamer to a cinder coated mess (that will teach me to visit with the propane delivery man when the veggies were steaming merrily away on the stove). After reading numerous reviews, I settled on the Oxo steamer. It arrived promptly, and works very well. The folding legs are a nice storage feature, and the handle keeps my inquisitive hand from being burned. Would highly recommend this steamer.Works with cast iron cookware too! |
