3.0 out of 5 stars a bit disappointed by this OXO product
I am usually a big fan of OXO products and have many of their other cooking/baking utensils. I was thrilled to see that OXO made a rolling pin. It's something that I haven't had much use for previously, but since I wanted to make large batches of cookies for friends and family this Christmas, I decided I should invest in one.

I have to admit that I was surprised when the rolling pin arrived. I'm used to OXO quality, but this is over the top. It is a big rolling pin, with an ideal diameter. It is also heavy. It's heft helps keep it where it belongs, instead of bouncing around on the dough and making you work harder. It has a strong axle, which glides remarkably smoothly, even when the pressure is on. The hard non stick surface works very well, and does not pick up butter grease like some other coatings. The handles are simply the best I have have encountered. This is a very well designed kitchen tool that fully lives up to the "Good Grips" promise of quality.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow, December 30, 2003
This review is from: OXO Good Grips Rolling Pin (Kitchen)
This smooth rolling, hefty, nonstick rolling pin is perfect for the avid baker. I've been coveting a ball-bearing rolling pin for years, but the expense has always stopped me. Now OXO has introduced a more reasonably priced nylon-bearing pin that does not adhere to dough the way wood does and is not as heavy as a marble one. The result is an ease of rolling that will make you wonder why you didn't get this sooner. It is easy to clean by hand, or, if you have room, in the dishwasher.

Highly recommended for serious bakers.

This is a good, solid rolling pin. Everyone loves a heavy rolling pin, but I find this one to be TOO smooth. Dough sticks to it like crazy, and you'd be better served by getting a simple (and cheaper!) wooden rolling pin that lets you spend more time rolling out dough and things instead of trying to peel off the huge pieces that are sticking to it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Almost didn't purchase this due to the mixed reviews..., December 20, 2010
This review is from: OXO Good Grips Rolling Pin (Kitchen)
As mentioned above, I wavered back and forth on this item because the Amazon reviews were all over the place.

I needed a rolling pin right away and I needed it to work. I wasn't going to have time for a practice run. I grew up on a wooden rolling pin so I had my heart set on a JK Adams. Bed, Bath, and Beyond assured me that they had the JK Adams line in stock. That proved to be a lie, so with much apprehension I selected the Oxo pin.

My experience with the Oxo rolling pin:

The dough I was using was a very moist gingerbread cookie dough. It makes very soft cookies but my friend warned me that rolling it was tricky due to its sticky nature.

I floured the dough on both sides and rolled it out without a problem. This pin takes a light touch. The person who assisted me had trouble with the last round of "scrap" dough. Since the dough had more flour in it by this time, she should have had an easier time, but she was very rough and heavy with the pin. So it is my guess that it was how she rolled the dough out. I think any rolling pin would have given her the same issue with that approach to that particular dough.

So in spite of the spotty reviews on Amazon, the pin I purchased locally worked like a charm. Maybe it is technique and approach to rolling that makes the difference with this pin. I also had the advantage of reading all the reviews before using the product, so automatically knew I might need to alter my "rolling skills".

I noticed that the one star reviewers were using the pin on dense sticky dough (pie crust) and dense, elastic dough (pasta). After using the pin on a soft but sticky dough, I can imagine that this pin might not be suitable for these types of dough because 1) the pin has very little friction and 2)these types of dough require some force but cannot take too much flour for rolling or they get tough.

I'll update my review when I use the rolling pin with pasta and with pie crusts.

5.0 out of 5 stars Makes rolling out even tricky doughs a breeze, May 21, 2009
This review is from: OXO Good Grips Rolling Pin (Kitchen)
I own many Oxo kitchen products and this rolling pin is a great example of why I do. It lives up to the name of good grips in two different ways. First, the handles fit perfectly in your hands and are easy to hold onto, even if your hands are floured or covered in dough. Second, the pin itself seems to do a good job of gripping the dough. The heft of it makes it easy to roll out even stubborn doughs to the desired thickness without tearing the dough. Best of all, I have no problems with sticking. Even if I do not grease my pin even the trickiest doughs slide off easily. I've used it for everything from pizza dough to sugar cookie dough to dog biscuit dough. It's great for everything.

It's also noting that even though there is a little heft to it, it's still not unbareably heavy. I have no problem working with it or cleaning it. The only thing I have noticed is that if I wash it in the dishwasher it seems to take on water so I have to be careful when removing it otherwise it leaks a significant amount of water on the floor.

Overall this is an excellent all purpose rolling pin and one I would recommend to anyone who enjoys cooking and baking and wants high quality kitchen tools.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Rolling Pin I Have Ever Used!!, May 16, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: OXO Good Grips Rolling Pin (Kitchen)
If you look at all of the reviews for this product you will see that it has its fair share of negative comments. In all honesty I almost purchased a different rolling pin due to these comments but I am really glad that I decided to buy it anyways as I for one absolutely love this rolling pin. First and foremost its has a perfect size and weight. This combined with a great set of handles makes this the most comfortable rolling pin I have ever used and I have used quite a few in my time.

The complaint that I have to disagree with the most is in regards to the dough sticking to the pin. While it is certainly a bit more sticky than wooden rolling pins, its not so sticky as to make it a nuisance. In fact I prefer this pin's level of stickiness to my old wooden pin. It gives it a better grip on the dough, yet not enough so that it causes problems. If your having a serious problem with dough sticking to this pin then I would take a good look at how accurate your measurements are because I can tell you first hand that this pin is not too sticky.

One of my favorite aspects to this pin is the fact that the handles are weighted so they are always in the proper position. This combined with a perfect height off the surface of the roller assure you will never bang you knuckles again. Of course it would be criminal of me not to mention the overall quality of this rolling pin. Like most of OXO's products, it has a very high build quality. I have absolutely no doubt that this pin will be with me for a very long time.

Bottom line - If your looking for a very high quality rolling pin then you should at least give the OXO rolling pin a look. The little details like the weighted handles really make this pin a real pleasure to work with.

5 Stars!

The biggest things that gravitated me toward this product was that it was made by OXO and that it was a non-stick, heavy rolling pin. However, once I used it with multiple batches of various cookie dough, I was a saddened to experience the dough would often stick to the pin, making rolling an unpleasant and frustrating experience.

It should be noted that I put flour on the dough and on the pin (although, since it's a non-stick surface, the flour didn't really stick to the pin). Maybe I am just a bad "dough-roller"?

In any case, this doesn't sway me away from OXO products in the future, but I think I'll need to get a different rolling pin for future rolling endeavors.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent product, October 19, 2009

I have used this rolling pin to roll out cinnamon-raisin dough for bread as well as roll-out cookie dough for cookies. It is a heavy rolling pin, which is nice for bread doughs that spring back, and if the dough is floured (or sugared) adequately, then the dough does not stick to the rolling pin at all.
Another way to solve sticking is put the dough between two sheets of wax paper, and that way your pin does not touch the dough at all.

I consider myself an intermediate baker, and I definitely recommend this rolling pin to other bakers, as it is comfortable to use and easy to clean.

The only complaint I have with this rolling pin is the price. If I had to buy a rolling pin again, I would get a plain, flared wooden pin with no handles, which only costs a few dollars, or just go to the hardware store and get a wooden dowel for even less.

The material this pin is made of sticks to almost everything I've rolled with it, so you basically need to flour it every time you're going to push on it. A wooden pin is much easier to use, because the surface is rough. The smooth surface of this OXO pin is just way too polished. It's comfortable and good at what it does, but I'm more impressed by something that can do the same thing for much, much less money.

1.0 out of 5 stars non-stick? for flour, maybe.., May 25, 2010
This review is from: OXO Good Grips Rolling Pin (Kitchen)
After "making" yet another pie with this piece of junk, I'm now scouring amazon for a new rolling pin. I have no clue how this thing can possibly market itself as non-stick. As soon as it touches pie crust, it adheres to it, yet when I put flour on the surface of the pin it simply slides right off. I have to pat it on about 10 times to make the flour stick just long enough for 2 or 3 passes over my dough, repair what has been pulled off (as it always does with this wretched thing) and then pat pat pat on more flour. Ugh, I'm so frustrated with the stupid thing that I loathe even looking at it in passing while looking up a replacement for it. Fortunately it was a gift so I personally did not waste any money on it...Yes the grips are lovely and yes it rolls oh so smoothly, but unless you're using it for play-doh, please please do not waste your time (or patience, or your dough that you're trying so lovingly to put together).
