The wide handles make it easy to crack small nuts without hurting your hands. It does not work very well for large nuts since you tend to increase the pressure and when the shell cracks you mash it to a pulp. For large nuts I suggest the Zyliss model. Having both of these you will be more than a match for any nut.

Not your grandfather's nutcracker!,
This review is from: OXO Good Grips Slim Nut/Seafood Cracker (Kitchen)
I'm from an Italian family, and we always had bowls of nuts that my grandfather shelled for us kids after holiday dinners. I never realized just what a difficult job cracking those nuts was until my husband and I recently attempted it ourselves--unfortunately using the same flimsy type of metal nutcracker that my grandfather used to use. The very next day, I went out and purchased this Oxo Good Grips Slim Nut/Seafood Cracker. I was a little hesitant, as it seemed a bit pricey, but I brought it home, telling my husband that it was an early Christmas gift for him. Well, he was the first to use it, trying it on a Brazil nut--you know, the ones in the mixed nut bag with the thickest, hardest-to-crack shells. We were both taken aback when, after he had barely exerted much pressure at all with the new Oxo Nut Cracker, the nut easily came apart in his hands! We found this product worked just as well on larger nuts, like walnuts, as did on smaller nuts, such as almonds and hazelnuts. The weighty feel and larger size make the Cracker easier to hold, and the black grips decrease the risk of slippage. We haven't yet tried the Cracker for seafood, but I am confident that the Oxo would perform just as well as a Seafood Cracker as it does with nuts. Highly recommended!

Nut cracker,
This review is from: OXO Good Grips Slim Nut/Seafood Cracker (Kitchen)
I use this to crack walnuts. It works pretty well although a few times I shot the shell halfway across the room...but that seems to happen with a lot of the nut crackers. I have not yet tried it on crab claws. It works well with nuts though.

Have you ever sat down to a large platter of crab claws and discovered that you couldn't break the shells to get to the juicy crabmeat waiting below?
- You tried using your teeth, but the resulting Dentist's bill doubled your overdraft position at the bank. - You pounded on them with your claw hammer, and you're still finding bits of crab in strange places (like your ear and the dining room curtains) - You used pliers, and now your vice grip won't even look at you anymore - Wooden mallet? See above - Large rock? Ditto Well look no more, because this handy gadget makes cracking stubborn crab claws a snap (literally). Between crab seasons, this wonderful tool switches effortlessly from crab to nuts, for all your walnut and small nut needs, and is especially good at Christmas time when you're raiding the horn of plenty. Clean-up is easy, and you'll find that there's no crab claw (or nut) that's too tough to crack. Amanda Richards, August 15, 2006

I bought this mainly for cracking the Ginkgo nuts that falling off from the trees in my neighborhood. The nuts are ranging from small to large size, and the cracker does a good job cracking the nuts without damaging the inside.

A bit too rough on some nuts you have to be gentle. But seems sturdy and like it will last a long time.

This was ordered and delivered promptly. For smaller nuts such as Pecans or Almonds, it's a great size and works well. This line of gadgets tends to have better functionality with their gripping ability. Anyone who has used one of the old style nut crackers knows what a hassle it can be to not be able to grip properly. This product makes it EZ to work.

Small nuts (e.g., pistachio nuts) are too small to work with this nut cracker. :-( I have not used this on any other nuts yet.

I have several OXO kitchen tools and like them for their durability and usability. This one has nice-sized handles with no-slip pads, so it doesn't fly out of your hand when you're cracking the nuts. My only complaint is that it's somewhat hard to use with smaller nuts like pistachios. They are almost too small and can easily slip out if they aren't lodged all the way at the end of the tool. I don't recommend this tool for kids. It's pretty heavy and the handles are too large for smaller hands.
