OXO's Peelers - An a-peel-ing alternative

The Swivel Peeler was the first of over 800 OXO tools introduced since 1990. OXO's founder was inspired to create a better functioning, more comfortable alternative to the traditional metal peeler after watching his wife struggle while peeling apples for a tart.

OXO's line of peelers includes options for all kinds of preferences, including the original Swivel Peeler, a Y-Peeler, a Serrated Peeler and a Julienne Peeler.

Fun Fact: OXO's iconic Swivel Peeler has found a home in the permanent collections of museums all over the world, including New York City's Museum of Modern Art. Next time, tell your friends you own a bona-fide museum piece!

Problems Identified
  • Small, uncomfortable handles hurt users' hands during repetitive tasks and require strength to grip; Handles do not flex for comfort
  • Materials used are slippery, especially when wet
  • Inefficient blades with poor cutting angles and sharpness cut into edible parts of fruits and vegetables, resulting in significant waste
The Process
  • During development, designers literally watched people of all ages and abilities (male and female, young and old, lefties and righties and people with special needs) interact with the product to identify precisely where on the handle users applied pressure while peeling.
  • The design team explored hundreds of different handles and learned that a bicycle handle, with its large size and "grippy" material, was a very effective jumping-off point for the Swivel Peeler. Bicycle handles have to be sturdy enough to give riders a significant amount of control, a feature that was lacking in the world of kitchen tools.
  • While sourcing parts for the original Swivel Peeler, designers worked with a blade manufacturer that was famous for creating Samurai swords. What better way to ensure the user would not have to expend much effort when peeling a carrot, apple or potato?
OXO's Solutions
  • Large handle fits comfortably in hand and elliptical shape keeps it from rotating; "Fins" on either side absorb pressure while in use.
  • Durable, rubberized material provides a cushioned, non-slip grip and significant control, even when wet.
  • Sharp blades are angled to remove only the minimum amount of peel necessary with little force

With the introduction of the Swivel Peeler, OXO set a new standard by creating a wonderfully effective, attractive tool that people of all ages and abilities were proud and eager to use. Consumers everywhere were taken with the "roly-poly, pudgy handles, " changing the look of kitchens the world over.

The OXO Story

In 1990, OXO staged a revolution (of sorts) by offering an easy-to-use, high-performing alternative to uncomfortable and ineffective kitchen gadgets. OXO's innovative take on the traditional Swivel Peeler, complete with its pudgy black handle, raised consumers' expectations of what could be expected from household products.

Today OXO offers over 800 products, each developed with a close (some might say "obsessive") attention to detail. Our goal is to deliver products that maximize comfort AND performance, illustrating our mission to create innovative consumer products that make everyday living easier.

Ever wonder what makes an OXO product an "OXO Product"?

OXO employees believe there are two rules that should guide product development: First, every new product must deliver a significant improvement over the status quo. Second, the functionality should never be sacrificed to make the product more attractive - above all it should work well.

Product Description

5.0 out of 5 stars Much more useful than I expected, May 14, 2006

I purchased this product because it was recommend on America's Test Kitchen. I didn't expect much, but I was wrong. The serrations do seem to improve the cutting ability of this blade.

I find that I reach for this peeler more frequently than I do my non-serrated peeler. It not only works well on tomatoes, but also on lemons, asparagus, sweet potatoes and butternut squash. I believe that this peeler could function well as the only peeler in a kitchen.

If you need a new peeler, try buying one of these before purchasing a standard peeler. I have been pleasantly surprised at how well this peeler works on both delicate and hard vegetables.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good for what it is but use with caution., July 25, 2007
This review is from: OXO Good Grips Serrated Peeler (Kitchen)
I like using this to peel kiwi fruit. It gives a nice clean peeling to the fruit. A regular paring knife will take too much of the skin hence too much of the flesh. But you must be careful with it, I once cut the tip of my pointer finger while peeling the kiwi fruit and it was quite painful. The serrated blades are very, very sharp. Another negative about this peeler is that the skin of the kiwi fruit got stuck on the teeth of the blades and I had to manually pluck out the skin. I think this slows down the rhythm and thus the efficiency of the peeler. My experience is that if you peel "slippery" fruit or vegetable like kiwi or tomato, you must be very careful that the fruit does not slip out of your hand when you use this peeler or you might risk injuring yourself just like I did. I usually cradle the fruit in paper towel to prevent from slippage and peel with extra caution.

This is a jewel. Takes the skin off nice and clean. Just the tool to get rid of those tough skins on a few tomatoes and no more fuzzy peaches. Just bought 6 more for family and friends.
