5.0 out of 5 stars You just have to make it work.
Yep....too tight to fit any olive bottle I know of. But rather than returning it, I took a single edge razor blade and (not all that carefully) trimed back the lower rings on the stopper assembly, leaving only the upper collar. This allowed it to now fit down into the bottle snuggly, maintaining a tight seal. Works perfect now, no more drippy olive oil bottle. I'm glad I...

3.0 out of 5 stars Great concept, if you can find a bottle it fits
I ordered this from the Oxo website and love the construction, the fact that it can be sealed when not in use, and the appearance. But it does not fit standard oil bottles. I will keep it with the hope I can eventually use it, but it is not able to be used on most bottles (most have a 5/8" to 7/8" opening, which are too small). I would give it 5 stars if I could use it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fits and works great!, November 5, 2010
This review is from: OXO Good Grips Oil Stopper/Pourer (Kitchen)
Love it! I hesitated about buying this item at first because of all the reviews saying it didn't fit, but it fit my Bertolli 750 ml bottle perfectly and works great. Like Raymond Perez said in his review, you don't have to use all of the ribs and push the stopper completely inside the bottle to make it work--you just need to put in far enough that some of the ribs keep the oil from pouring out. The graduated ribbing is meant to allow the stopper to fit in a range of bottle sizes--smaller bottles use only the smaller ribs near the bottom.

Also, I saw some people didn't like how slowly the stopper pours, but I didn't find this to be a problem. It is a little slow getting started, but then it pours nicely. It definitely pours slower than the original plastic top that came with the olive oil bottle, but it's fast enough and it gives better control over the amount of oil that comes out. Someone else mentioned that sometimes the air hole may get stopped up with oil and make the stopper pour slowly, and I think that is indeed what happens sometimes when the stopper pours really slowly, but I usually just tip the bottle upright again for a bit and then it will pour ok.

Love the valve to close the oil spout. Tried pouring with the valve closed, and nothing came out. Saw Mikemac9's review that it leaked when he put it on the side. I turned the bottle upside down and didn't see any leaking, although maybe if I left it on its side (or upside down) for a longer time, it might leak eventually (maybe through the air hole?). Anyway, works perfectly for my use.

I keep the oil on the counter most of the time, so I didn't have issues with the additional height added to the bottle by the stopper or my bottle becoming too top-heavy and tipping on a lazy susan. The stopper isn't that heavy, so I didn't have trouble with my bottle getting too top-heavy, but then again I'm using a glass 750 ml bottle. I guess the weight of the stopper could be more of a problem if someone uses a plastic bottle with it.

Great product! I will purchase more for myself and for my family as gifts.

4.0 out of 5 stars Best Yet, December 31, 2008

I have been in search of a good olive oil spout and wanted one with a lid or a way to close. This does that and like most OXO products is very sturdy. It was a bit tight to get on our olive oil bottle, but once in it's not going anywhere. It does not drip either. My only complaint is that it pours pretty slowly, which is good in some applications. I just wish there was one that would let you adjust the flow rate. Until then, this is the best that I have tried of many.

4.0 out of 5 stars Figured out how to make it fit - works great!, January 20, 2010

I hesitantly purchased this oil stopper after reading all the reviews saying that the stopper didn't fit any of the bottles people owned. I was so disappointed that it didn't fit my own decorative oil bottle - until I decided to try fitting it to the actual bottle that the oil comes in. It fits perfectly! I just pulled out that little plastic piece that is inside of the oil bottle and replaced it with the stopper. Now when I buy more oil, I'll make sure to buy a pretty-looking brand name and replace the cap with this great stopper! I don't think this stopper was meant to be a topper for a decorative bottle - it was meant to replace the screw cap of a store-bought bottle of oil. The way that the pourer swings closed makes it perfect.

The plastic material is not pliable enough to fit almost every single bottle that I've tried. Not only that, but within a very short period of time a separation occurs between the metal and plastic part of the pourer, that causes oil to leak out the sides of the unit. I've gone through three of these pourers in a very short period of time, and it happened to each one of them. I love the look, the style, and the way it works, but the defects lower my rating to a rock bottom rating of one star.

UPDATE: (11/21/2011) I contacted OXO, shortly after posting this review, and explained the problem, they asked me to send the three pourers back to them, and they'd send me three replacements. They shipped them before the returns even arrived at their address. In the meantime, I purchased 3 sets of another type of pourer, that dispense either 1 or 2 tablespoons of oil, or whatever you have in the bottle, at a time. They are absolutely fantastic. It also saves having to wash the oil from a tablespoon measurer. The replacement OXO pourers have been sitting in a drawer, until recently, when I finally found a couple of green wine bottles that they fit in perfectly. I use them to pour a larger quantity of oil in a pan for frying, where measurement is not a factor. They do not leak, either from around the rubber flanges, or from between the plastic, and metal parts of the pourer. The latter leak, I discovered, was caused from trying to push/twist the pourer in a regular sized oil bottle. Apparently the twisting motion caused the bond between plastic and metal to crack, causing it to leak. So, taking into account all of this updated info, I'm upping my review to 4 stars. And the minus one star is mainly due to the fact that the stoppers just won't work in a regular sized oil bottle.

2.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't fit normal size oil bottles and is very very dirty inside, December 14, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: OXO Good Grips Oil Stopper/Pourer (Kitchen)
Pros:
- High quality, sturdy, doesn't seem to easily rust

Cons:
- Doesn't fit normal tall olive oil bottles. I bought ones from Walmart, target, and Bed Bath Beyond and the rubber bottle insert is just too large to thread all the way into the bottles so it's stuck halfway in which still works but is a bit flimsy. Oxo needs to graduate this more to fit standard size narrow olive oil bottles.

- Take a qtip, soak it in alcohol, and rub it inside the metal spout, you will be disgusted to see how much black grease is in there. It took me 20 qtips and a long soak in a jar of alcohol to get it clean. Really poor quality control on the part of Oxo. Imagine all the people who don't think to clean inside the spout this way, they are consuming all that factory grease without knowing it.

Item works great, seals well, and pretty much does everything it says. And it looks great too. The only thing that I would worry about is that it adds about 2 inches to the height of the bottle. This might require you to relocate the bottle to a taller shelf (as it did me).

A lot of reviews are blasting this item because the holes on most bottles are too small to accomodate the 2 topmost ribs. You don't need to use all the ribs. Also, if you look at the picture in the packaging, it shows a bottle with a smaller neck that has it installed only up to the last 2 ribs, so this isn't some type of secret, undocumented feature.

1.0 out of 5 stars Close, but no cigar, May 17, 2009
This review is from: OXO Good Grips Oil Stopper/Pourer (Kitchen)
After searching for an oil bottle stopper/pourer that seals and can be washed in the dishwasher, I was elated to find this product. Stainless steel, 3 sealing ribs/fins, and elegant looks are all great features, too.

Unfortunately, I couldn't find even one bottle that it would fit! The diameter is not standard to any wine or oil bottle that I could find, the plastic ribs/fins which are supposed to provide an airtight seal are too rigid, and it's top-heavy. A crying shame, because it's the only one I could find that seals the air pressure equalizer as well as the spout.

I can't even comment on how it pours, because I never got that far.

Good try, Oxo, but I returned the one I bought and won't be getting another until you produce one that actually fits and has flexible ribs/fins for a solid seal.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Job OXO!! (It does fit), May 10, 2010

This review is from: OXO Good Grips Oil Stopper/Pourer (Kitchen)
I don't know what's up with the other reviewers who say it doesn't fit any olive bottle they know of because it fits all of mine. On some it fits down the neck further than others but I haven't found a single olive oil bottle that it won't fit. The Kroger store bought extra virgin olive oil bottles have the widest neck of all the bottles I have and it fits and seals those perfectly. It fits all the bottles I've purchased from various stores including here at Amazon.
This is a well engineered and well built pourer that won't leak if the bottle is accidentally knocked over unlike others with the flapper top. And, unlike those that have no flap at the top these units seal out unwanted air and will keep the oil fresher longer. Good job OXO!!!!
