Oxo products are routinely superior, and the new strawberry huller is no exception. My family often goes through strawberries in bulk, so for us this tool is long overdue.
Many people have a lazy way of preparing strawberries that never tastes right - i.e., they just rip the stem off quickly, or at best they'll make a quick cut at the white part. But my mother's way tastes far better - make a circular incision into each 'berry, making sure the white is mostly gone, leaving only the flavorful part. Up until now, all the hullers in stores have been cheap, flimsy, and awkward - kind of a joke. But OXO finally figured out how to make a one-size-fits-all contraption for the strawberry that works perfectly every time (except when the 'berry is exceptionally small). One quick, unskilled swipe (push in, turn, pull the tool out sideways), and you can move on. For most sizes, you can even get the hull out without the extra step of pulling the leaves off (just rinse them afterward to loosen any that got stuck). So this makes the job quick and easy, helping you get to the best of the fruit in the best way, with significantly less effort. Another thing to consider - it also eliminates the danger of slicing into your fingers from holding a knife in an awkward position. So... if you prepare a lot of strawberries, or aren't very skilled at hulling, or have arthritis, or have kids who want to help out, then this is a good investment.

I'm a foodie and love well-designed kitchen gadgets. If I could give the Oxo huller 3 1/2 stars, I would, but I truly don't think it deserves four stars.
Where does it fall short? 1) I find that I need to pull out the leaves by hand before I use the huller otherwise there are bits of green left behind as the huller minces through the leaves to get to the hull. The product description claims you don't need to do that. 2) You need to get the hang of how to use the huller - I find I have to pierce the fruit at a slight angle so I can scoop the hull out - occasionally the hull just caves into the fruit when you pierce it and you have to turn the fruit upside down and shake the hull out. When it does work right, I do like the taste of strawberries with the 'not so sweet' hull out, plus it improves presentation on desserts and such when the white hull is absent. Am I going to replace this tool? I doubt it...unless I am convinced there truly is a huller on the market that has it down pat!

I am giving this product 3.5 stars, it does not deserve 4 stars. I am generally a fan of Oxo products but this one falls a little short in my book.
The overall product design/concept is good. It is easy to use, easy to clean and inexpensive. Yet it has some flaws which Oxo will probably fix in later versions of this product. 1. I suggest hulling the strawberries first and then washing them because when you hull them, little bit of the leaves get inside. OR you can wash them, pull off the leaves and then hull them, but I think that is a waste of time. 2. This really only works well with the average size strawberries (approximately 1 inch or so). With the smaller strawberries, the huller mangles the fruit. With the larger strawberries, the huller does not remove the entire hull so you still have to remove a little piece of the hull. Also, with the larger strawberries, the hull tends to get stuck in the product so you have to pull it out by hand instead of pushing the button to release it. Overall, this is the only strawberry huller I have and I will keep using it because it makes hulling faster and I usually am hulling 4 lbs. of strawberries but I think using a paring knife is fine for those who do not hull many strawberries at once.

This is advertised and called a strawberry huller, but it came in handy when I was cutting up a pineapple the other night. It is perfect for removing the spiney pineapple eyes!

This is my video review of the Oxo Good Grips Strawberry Huller. I like this product and I think it works exactly like it should. At one point, I take the huller apart and then put it back together kinda funny, ignore this... that's the only time it's ever happened and it was really easy to fix! So don't let that dissuade you from using this product. Some might ask "why not just use a knife?" and my response to that is that knives are sharp and can be awkward when trying to COMPLETELY hull a strawberry. Also, the end result might not be quite as pretty and, for me, using a knife takes longer than using this huller. In the video I slow the process down so you can really see how to use it properly, but in reality it's quite fast to use this product.

"Good Grip" Huller,

This is as close to perfect as you can get for someone with arthritis. My hand hurts much less using the Good Grips tools from Oxo and this tool is no exception. Yes, there may be a little bit of leaf left, but I always wash my berries after I have handled them so it works well for me. The tool is a convenient size and the berries look great!

point 1- the instructions for this product say that this will remove the hull AND the leaves. It will absolutely not. For any hope in getting the center hull out you must remove the leaves first before even using this thing. So as far as I'm concerned all this does is add an extra step.
Point 2- Very often the hull just ends up being pushed down into the berry rather than coming out. This is because this tool does not actually grab the hull like it's supposed to. You have to go in at an angle and practically scoop out the hull. If you're lucky enough to get it you don't need to use the eject button because this thing doesn't grab anything. Just turn it upside down or put it under the sink and any hull it happened to scoop comes right out. I threw this in the trash and now I have a MUCH better strawberry huller made by tge Chef'n brand.

I wanted to lose some weight and eat more fruits and vegatables. After cutting up the produce with paring knives and peelers, I decided to invest in some gadgets to make it a little easier. I bought several OXO gadgets and I love them all. This is a great strawberry huller. For those having trouble getting rid of the leaves, read the instructions. Twist the leaves around the huller as you are inserting it into the strawberry. You will get most of them, then just rinse off any little remanants. It works perfectly most of the time. When it isn't perfect it is the fault of the user not the device. I haven't really had much trouble with different sizes of strawberries. It works great on small, medium and large.

Big Letdown,
This review is from: OXO Good Grips Strawberry Huller (Kitchen)
I picked up one of these at the local BB&B and had high hopes. Unfortunately most of the time you just press the huller in and it leaves the center in the strawberry. Sometimes you can roll the huller over to get it out but it beats up the strawberry. It also cuts off the green top and leaves all the little leaves all over the strawberry to be washed off. This thing may take the top off cleaner but it takes twice as long as paring knife.
I've since purchased the Chef'n StemGem Strawberry Huller. It works amazing for a 9 dollar gadget. |
