4.0 out of 5 stars Caps a little awkward, could have gone with nutmeg instead
I have this and the "basic" set and I love them both. 1.0 out of 5 stars Great idea, but not with these spices
This is a really good idea, and I hope the other sets from oxo work well. We got this for a wedding present, and I used it successfully a couple of times. Then it jammed. Now it jams up a lot. It takes a lot of fiddling to unjam it, since it doesn't come apart. I don't think its the quality of the grinder. It seems well made. I think the grinder just cannot handle...

I have this and the "basic" set and I love them both. The bit about measuring into the caps is a little decieving...I thought you used a pre-measured setting or something like that, but you really just grind into the cap which has a series of concentric circles for measuring. You have to tap the contents to gather it into the center to get an accurate "measure", so it's not exactly flawless. They are also a little hard to get off easily when you're in the middle of cooking. Lastly, why ginger instead of nutmeg? Ginger is best grated on a ceramic fresh ginger grater, I use nutmeg a lot more in my baking than ginger.

Don't get me wrong, I love the set, the grinder works really well with its adjustable coarseness setting. Those were just a couple of things I would have done differently.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best grinder mechanism on the market--at any price!, November 10, 2002

Like a lot of people, I've spent a lot of time and money trying to find a spice grinder that meets a new simple criteria for quuality. Here's what the OXO grinders do well:

1) Grind whole spices. It seems simple, but a lot of [costly] grinders do a terrible job of grinding. They might look good on the table or in the kitchen, but who cares if you're getting chunks of unground pepper in your salad?

2) Clean up. I use my OXO grinders in the kitchen for cooking. They get dirty and one of my pet peeves with most grinders is that it's impossible to keep them clean. OXO did a marvelous job making sure they used materials and a design that actually promoted cleaning.

3) Adjust fineness quickly and easily. Without question, these grinders have the smartest adjustment I've ever used. And the mechanism is ceramic, so it will not wear out like plastic or some soft metals.

4) Good looks. Frankly, I bought my first set of OXO grinders because they looked cooler than anything else on the shelf. Is that important? Well, yes. I now have a collection of about 25 of these grinders in full view in my kitchen and it is a source of pride that I have such a great looking grinder set.

5) Reasonable price. When you consider the high quality of the spices included with OXO grinders, they're an absolute bargain for the price. I wouldn't hesitate to buy these, because they (not the spices) will last for a good, long time and you'll get many times' your investment out of them in pure enjoyment and aesthetic value.

OXO grinders are superb and deserve all the good press they're getting. I highly recommend them!

It takes a lot of fiddling to unjam it, since it doesn't come apart. I don't think its the quality of the grinder. It seems well made. I think the grinder just cannot handle hard spices, such as cinnamon bark and allspice berries. Too bad, because freshly ground cinnamon is yummy. This same idea probably would work on smaller, softer seeds, like fennel, cumin, coriander, etc.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money!!, March 27, 2004

The OXO Grind It set left me very disappointed. To start with the packing of the product for shipping is very bad. One jar in the bake set was broken and two jars of the basic set were broken. After using the rest of the spices in the remaining jars, I found that they tasted very old and had to throw out the dish that I had made because of the old flavor of the spices.
The concept of only needing one grinder for four different spices is a good one but the product does not meet expectations. Examples: The product description states that you can select the measurements you need, ¼ tsp, ½ tsp etc. The measurements are not accurate nor does it state how many times you need twist to get that amount. My second example is that to take the grinder attachment off of the glass base is a bit frustrating. You always end up with a lot of the last spice you used in the grinder, so you waste the spices when you shake it over the garbage can trying to remove it.
I have a similar product to this that is a white ceramic grinder with a glass base. You buy them with out the spices but they have never let me down. You also know that the spices are fresh. My recommendation is that you look at other products before purchasing the OXO Grind It set.
