Well constructed, no so well designed,

I have a lot of Oxo gear in my kitchen because it's a brand you can (almost) always rely on to be best in it's class...great build quality, great performance, great design. This colander gets two out of three. It's sturdy, it drains well, the rubberized rim is convenient for lifting. My beef with the thing, and the part that drives me CRAZY every time I use it is the design of the little peg feet. It's terrible. Even though they're supposed to be 'non skid', in my stainless steel sink, it slides around a puppy on ice. On top of that, the feet are SO SHORT than when you pour your, for example, pot of pasta and water, into the thing, the water doesn't go down the drain fast enough and ends up getting 'backed up' onto the pasta sitting in the colander. Can you say "unsanitary!"? There needs to be more space between the bottom of the colander and the sink. It's a surprising design blunder by a company otherwise known for excellent design. After a couple months, I ended up getting the Tovolo, which has a better circular base design - and is also larger, which is a bonus.

Great for draining even the tiniest food ...,

Since my old colander broke I've been looking for a good replacement. The only ones I've come across are either mesh or pierced with large-ish holes. I never did like mesh ones, since they are flimsy and difficult to clean - food particles often get stuck in the mesh; the pierced ones have holes that are fairly large, so forget draining pastini or orzo; and, since the handles on my last one were soldered (not riveted), they fell off after 2-3 years. This was a discovery! Bowl and handles are one piece, and handles are covered with rubber so they don't get hot. It is pierced all over with tiny holes, and has small rubber feet (soldered - we'll see how long these last), so everything drains very quickly. Price is a little expensive for a colander, but it does have some great features. It's worked out very well so far.

If you can't decide whether to get the 3 or 5 quart Oxo colander, ask yourself if you ever cook a pound of pasta. If so, make sure to order the 5 quart! The 5 quart colander, to me, is not too big at all. Virtually nothing slips through the holes, and it is easy to clean. I would not recommend using the dishwasher, as it can picks up little bits of food-uggh! It has a good height, and the food doesn't escape over the top. It has proven very sturdy, even after I have abused it by slinging it into the sink. I feel almost guilty about not giving it a five star rating. I wish the handles were larger. If you are not very careful, your knuckles will rest against the hot colander. To me, it's not that easy to get a good grip on a heavy colander without resting your knuckles against the metal. A great addition to any kitchen!
