5.0 out of 5 stars Great for draining even the tiniest food ...
Since my old colander broke I've been looking for a good replacement. The only ones I've come across are either mesh or pierced with large-ish holes. I never did like mesh ones, since they are flimsy and difficult to clean - food particles often get stuck in the mesh; the pierced ones have holes that are fairly large, so forget draining pastini or orzo; and, since the...

I have a lot of Oxo gear in my kitchen because it's a brand you can (almost) always rely on to be best in it's class...great build quality, great performance, great design. I have a lot of Oxo gear in my kitchen because it's a brand you can (almost) always rely on to be best in it's class...great build quality, great performance, great design. This colander gets two out of three. It's sturdy, it drains well, the rubberized rim is convenient for lifting. My beef with the thing, and the part that drives me CRAZY every time I use it is the design of the little peg feet. It's terrible. Even though they're supposed to be 'non skid', in my stainless steel sink, it slides around a puppy on ice. On top of that, the feet are SO SHORT than when you pour your, for example, pot of pasta and water, into the thing, the water doesn't go down the drain fast enough and ends up getting 'backed up' onto the pasta sitting in the colander. Can you say "unsanitary!"? There needs to be more space between the bottom of the colander and the sink. It's a surprising design blunder by a company otherwise known for excellent design. After a couple months, I ended up getting the Tovolo, which has a better circular base design - and is also larger, which is a bonus.

Since my old colander broke I've been looking for a good replacement. The only ones I've come across are either mesh or pierced with large-ish holes. I never did like mesh ones, since they are flimsy and difficult to clean - food particles often get stuck in the mesh; the pierced ones have holes that are fairly large, so forget draining pastini or orzo; and, since the handles on my last one were soldered (not riveted), they fell off after 2-3 years. This was a discovery! Bowl and handles are one piece, and handles are covered with rubber so they don't get hot. It is pierced all over with tiny holes, and has small rubber feet (soldered - we'll see how long these last), so everything drains very quickly. Price is a little expensive for a colander, but it does have some great features. It's worked out very well so far.

4.0 out of 5 stars Kitchen workhorse, December 10, 2009

If you can't decide whether to get the 3 or 5 quart Oxo colander, ask yourself if you ever cook a pound of pasta. If so, make sure to order the 5 quart! The 5 quart colander, to me, is not too big at all. Virtually nothing slips through the holes, and it is easy to clean. I would not recommend using the dishwasher, as it can picks up little bits of food-uggh! It has a good height, and the food doesn't escape over the top. It has proven very sturdy, even after I have abused it by slinging it into the sink. I feel almost guilty about not giving it a five star rating. I wish the handles were larger. If you are not very careful, your knuckles will rest against the hot colander. To me, it's not that easy to get a good grip on a heavy colander without resting your knuckles against the metal. A great addition to any kitchen!

I love just about everything Oxo makes, but this is quite possibly my favorite piece. It easily holds a pound of pasta or several pounds of potatoes, and I don't have to worry about smaller pastas like angel hair and the mini shells getting stuck or falling through. It's easy to clean even without a dishwasher, and it sits nicely in the sink and doesn't try to tip over when I pour things into it. Love it!

I got this to replace an old aluminum colander that had to be at least 40 years old. It does a great job and you can drain small items like orzo and rice without loosing any through the holes. The only draw back is it is huge. I will be getting the smaller model for smaller jobs.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Useful Addition, November 14, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
A 5-qt colander is often just too big, and this product has proven to be more than adequate for the majority of needs for 3 people. The surface is smooth on both sides and easy to clean. I give it only 4 stars because I would have liked to see welded stainless feet, not these glued-on (steel?, aluminum?). I can use my all-stainless colander with hot cooking oil, but cannot use this one because of the feet - not a big deficiency.

5.0 out of 5 stars LOVE this colander--wish I'd bought it sooner!, January 28, 2010

I had previously used a very old, enamel on steel colander. The best things were its size and its solid ring base; the worst part was it had large holes that my thin spaghetti easily slid through into the sink. I decided to replace it with this one and haven't looked back! The numerous small holes allow water to drain quickly while keeping my pasta inside the colander. The feet are very steady and keep the bottom out of the draining water below. Also because the feet are silicone I don't worry about placing the colander with pasta back inside my pot with a little boiling water in the bottom to act as a steamer/warmer and then I really appreciate the silicone handles when transferring as they stay cool to the touch.

Definitely recommend this item!

3.0 out of 5 stars Holes are too far apart, October 8, 2010

This review is from: OXO Good Grips 5-Quart Stainless-Steel Colander (Kitchen)
As said by other reviewers, this OXO colander is well made, and easy to clean. It is big enough and sturdy enough to handle a large amount of fruit or pasta without buckling. Besides which the rubber feet prevent the bowl from coming into direct contact with the sink.

This heavy duty strainer would be perfect except for one fact. The holes are spaced too far apart and there is ALWAYS water left in the bottom. With fruit it doesn't really matter, but when it comes to food that require a thorough draining, I have to tilt the strainer all the while trying not to let the food fall out. This defeats the whole purpose of using a colander.

Mesh strainers may be more difficult to clean but they drain more thoroughly... I will keep the OXO colander, but will buy a mesh one as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for small meals, September 12, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This colander has been just what I needed, small enough not to take a lot of space and big enough to hold what I need it to. Its a fairly small colander, so don't get it if you need to hold more than 2-3 pounds of beef or a lot of pastas and vegetables. I use it to rinse ground beef a lot and its good because all the meat stays in. So far the colander has not rusted even though I have put let it sit in the sink over night. Also it does well in the dishwasher. It is a great sturdy colander to have.

3.0 out of 5 stars Ok, But not as Great as Expected, July 31, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: OXO Good Grips 5-Quart Stainless-Steel Colander (Kitchen)
I have a variety of different colanders. When I read the rave reviews for this one, I thought I was missing something. So I bought it.
As far as I am concerned, it is no better or worse than all the others I have. The water still collects in the holes and doesn't drain
any faster. It does feel good in your grip and has a quality look, however.
If you are buying your first or need to replace an old colander, this is the one, but if you want the water to drain and dry off fast, it won't happen.
