I've been using this apple corer for a few months and have to say I like it.
It cuts through an apple very quickly and precisely, much faster than if you were to use a traditional knife.
This is the perfect tool for a person who is prepping home made apple pie or apples in quantity.
It cleans easily in the sink or dishwasher.

I recently needed to cut a mountain of apples for a party. I knew that not all apple dividers were created equal and I wanted to have the best one. So I went out and bought three different ones to test before the big day. I wasn't crazy about the OXO's looks (I preferred the sleek stainless steel model I found for triple the price at Williams Sonoma), but in terms of utility--and honestly what other criterion should an apple divider be rated on?--the OXO divider was hands down the best. It slices the apple into 8 slices rather than 12. The fact that it cuts fewer slices makes the divider easier to use. Also the center hole for the core was just slightly larger than on the other two models I tried and that made it so that I needed to do fewer touchups with the knife on the OXO sliced apples. Also, the greater ease of cutting made it easier to cut straight slices, rather than wavy, uneven ones. The rubber handles are good because if you must cut a lot of apples rather than just one, the slipperiness of the juice can become an issue.

5.0 out of 5 stars Durable, easy to use--apple consumption way up at out house!, July 4, 2002

I love this thing! It's durable, easy to use and clean, and it's offset design protects whatever surface you are using it on.

Since we bought it we now buy twice as many apples as we used to. The kids now snack on fresh apple more often and junk food less often. This alone has made this one of the best return to investment ratio products I've ever bought!

(My kids are middle-high scholl age--I'd be a ltiile carefuil with younger kids using it--the blades are sharper than they look.)

I just orderd a second one to keep at my office for quick & healthy afternoon snacks!

Frankly, I feel no home should be without one of these!

5.0 out of 5 stars Makes it easy!, January 19, 2002
This review is from: OXO Good Grips Apple Corer and Divider (Kitchen)
Daily use for months now without a problem. It works great on apples and pears, cuts them to 8 equal pieces. The blade side on mine is really sharp, best cleaned with a dish brush (I've cut myself a couple of times on it.) Can't say I'd recommend letting the kids use it. The only criticism I have is sometimes it's hard to remove the core at the center, but otherwise it works really well. In response to one of the other reviews: you should check to see if the stem and the flower end line up to minimize capturing some of the core in your slices. This is especially true if your fruit is somewhat odd shaped--you may have to line up your stroke.

3.0 out of 5 stars Efficient Kitchen Tool - But..., September 14, 2007
This review is from: OXO Good Grips Apple Corer and Divider (Kitchen)
I've been using this apple corer for a few months and have to say I like it.
It cuts through an apple very quickly and precisely, much faster than if you were to use a traditional knife.
This is the perfect tool for a person who is prepping home made apple pie or apples in quantity.
It cleans easily in the sink or dishwasher.
The divider seems sturdy, but only time will tell.

That said, there are some "BUTs":

* Large size makes cutting smaller apples difficult.
* Occasionally an apple will shift while cutting and the cuts will be off.
* Large size makes drawer storage cumbersome.
* Be careful of the very sharp blades, accidental cut can happen.
* Usually does not cut 100% of the way through and one has to wiggle the core out and pull off the peices at the bottom.

If you don't mind coring and dividing an apple by hand then I say stick with your favorite knife. But for those of you for whom it has always been a chore, those who want to do it quickly, or those with a lot of apple to chop, this is a great timesaving tool.

1.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't hold up - worthless warranty - dangerous failure ahead!, December 9, 2009
By
zeitboy (Los Altos Hills, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: OXO Good Grips Apple Corer and Divider (Kitchen)
While the Apple slicer was pretty nice when we first got it, two problems have emerged which make it not the high quality product I had expected. Cracks have appeared at each every point where the blades met the frame, indicating weakening and potential failure. Additionally, the cutting blades have lost their sharpness, so you need to exert a lot of pressure to get through an apple. I'm worried that applying all this extra pressure will cause it to break in my hands, and potentially slice off a finger!

I conacyted OXO about replacment under their warranty, but they want me to box it up and send it to them. It will cost even more time and energy to mail than the product is even worth, so I'm not sure why the warranty is of any value.

I bought 2 of these because I eat a lot of apples and pears. Both of them split on the sides within 6 months. These OXO units 'look' like they are sturdier, better quality than other plastic units, but they aren't. If you use a corer/divider on a regular basis, don't waste your money on these; go for an all stainless steel unit instead.

5.0 out of 5 stars Contrary to some reviews, this will last FOREVER, November 1, 2009

Allow me to explain my apparently absurd title... Some people have complained that it arrived cracked or dull, or that it cracked or broke within an unreasonable time. Apparently they did not read the card that the corer came attached to. On it OXO states: "Satisfaction Guarantee: If for any reason your are not satisfied with this product, return it for repair, replacement, or refund." To me this means if it has anything wrong with it or you don't like it for any reason, you can return it for a repair, replacement, or refund tomorrow or 3 years from now. There is no time limit in the statement; there is no asterisk with fine print following. So, unless OXO is lying, it is guaranteed virtually forever.

Next my own experience. I received mine from Amazon a week ago (no cracks in the plastic, the blades are sharp) and have been using it since then, just preparing a single apple at a time for my own pleasure. I really like how quickly and easily I can get an apple ready to eat! I wish I had gotten one of these years ago so I would have eaten more apples and fewer less healthful snacks. (Personal note: my teeth aren't very good for biting so if an apple isn't sliced I'm much less likely to want to eat it.)

I don't have a cutting board so I have been cutting right on my small ceramic serving plate. I have found it cuts smoothly and easily if I rock it a little as I push it down to keep in control and not smash the plate. (In this case it is probably a good thing the frame is plastic and not metal.)

I am grateful to the reviewer who suggested to slice off the bottom 1/16" of the apple before using the corer so that the skin doesn't hold it all together and make it hard to separate the slices. That little effort makes a huge difference; the slices will just fall right out (by themselves or with a gentle poke) when you finish the downstroke. All you have to do is wiggle the core loose and rinse off the corer and you are ready to eat.

This is the first of these that I've ever used so I can't compare with others, although I did shop around on Amazon and saw that OXO makes an all metal version for a couple of dollars more for those who don't think plastic will last. Also I saw another manufacturer who claimed their product was "large" so that might be a better choice for those who need to slice larger apples (although this one seems to have plenty of room left over with the apples I've sliced so far).

It's an unqualified winner for me, so it gets my full five stars.

1.0 out of 5 stars I'm on my second one, March 27, 2005
This review is from: OXO Good Grips Apple Corer and Divider (Kitchen)
They both have cracked on the sides where the blades join the plastic. This is not acceptable. I tried a stainless steel model but it is very heavy and not sharp so it needs lots of force. Any other suggestions? I can't keep spending $7 for a product that keeps breaking. Oxo are you listening?

3.0 out of 5 stars Good with a major flaw, March 30, 2006

This devise cores and divides apples with no problem but it is a pain to clean. Where the metal folds over itself in several places there is a gap that collects bits of apple. Cleaning it with a toothpick every time I use it is a pain. Flushing it under the tap doesn't do it.

It is very sturdy and the blades are sharp. I used to have an all-metal one (not OXO), but it would bend when I pushed down on it. The OXO slices through the apple quickly and easily, and the rubber grips are easy on the hands.
