OXO Good Grips Wire Cheese Slicer with Replaceable Wires

Oxo generally makes great products, but every so often they come up with a dud. This is one of the duds. The problem is in the tensioning mechanism, which consists of a spiral gear that engages a toothed track molded into the end of the slicing wire. Turning the spiral gear with your thumb moves the track and tightens the wire. Unfortunately, the gear is made from plastic and is prone to break. When the first slicer we bought broke I thought it might be a fluke, given Oxo's good reputation. Now that the second one has broken in the same way, I'm concluding that it's a bad design. If Oxo ever replaces the plastic thumbwheel with a metal one this product might be great, but until that time I'd stay away.

I got this cheese slicer for my wife and she loves it. OXO products, in general seem to be of real good quality. ( We also have their canopener). The slicer comes with 3 wires, so should last a lifetime for a household. (No need to purchase extra pack of wires)

This is a heavy-duty slicer that seems to be built to last. I love the fact that it comes with replacement wires. The down side is the thickness of the cheese slices - too thick to use the guide bar when slicing so it is still difficult to get straight, even slices.

UPDATE - Sept. 2009. The mechanism that holds the wire in place has broken. Would not reccomend this product!!

I have rheumatoid arthritis so finding kitchen tools that are easy on the hands is important for me. This one is great. Very comfortable to use, and a great cheese slicer. The tension adjustment is easy to use, easy to vary the thickness of slicing with a little practice, easy to change out replacement cutting wires. Great design, great value.

I have purchased two of these slicers. Each lasted about a month. In both cases the adjusting wheel broke off. After the first one broke, I contacted Oxo. They told me to ship them the defective slicer for replacement. Not worth the effort and expense for an inexpensive item. My husband convinced me to buy a second one with the idea that we still had the extra wires and the slicer really worked very well, maybe we just got a faulty product. $26.00 and 2 cheese slicers later I am willing to admit this is a lemon and the search for a decent slicer continues.

About a month ago or more the plastic knob that tightens the wire broke. It will not work without a wire that is tight. Thank you, Yvonne Haeffner 406 563-7857

See "Interesting design but badly flawed" review. I had the exact same experience of having not one but two of these items plastic tension wheals break after limited use. Oddly, they supply the item with 2 replacement wires, but these wires don't break before the wheel fails, so you'll never need them. The slicer does, however, work very well until failure.

The design of this tool is all wrong. First off, the wire is is like 1/2" away from the roller, making it next to impossible to slice "standard" thickness cheese slices (probably about 1/8"). The only way you can get remotely close to this is by just ignoring the roller completely. Whats the point? Also as others have mentioned the plastic tensioning gear broke within a few uses. This tool is a dud. Avoid unless you like 1/2" cheese slices.

I've owned both this and the OXO Good Grips Wire Cheese Slicer, and there is simply no contest. Spend the few extra dollars and get this one. Adjustable wire, replacable wire, and an overall better and easier to clean design makes the older OXO slicer above completely obsolete. Shop around though, because you can buy it with 2 extra wires included instead of 1.

We have bought cheese slicers at the grocery, at the hardware store, and specialty cooking stores...they're all awful. They fall apart; the wires come off; they rust. This one is WONDERFUL. Well made; comes sparkling clean from the dishwasher; cuts cheese like a champ. Thank goodness we won't need to buy another cheese slicer for a long time!
