5.0 out of 5 stars simply revolutionary!
Simply put, the Oxo salad spinner receives such stellar reviews because it is an extremely well designed product, that operates on a simple principle, and works fantastically well. Given a choice, almost everyone would prefer fresh, clean vegetables and fruit. However, washing them usually leaves you with the problem of excess water, and that is where the Oxo comes in...

Recently purchased the green salad spinner to replace the original "plain" spinner, purchased many years ago and finally gave up the ghost. After the first use, the spinner mechanism broke! - Just like some other experiences listed here. The interior of the stem was filled with white goo and the plastic was cracked. I am trying with the company to get it fixed. Very...

5.0 out of 5 stars simply revolutionary!, February 4, 2010
This review is from: OXO Good Grips Green Salad Spinner (Kitchen)
Simply put, the Oxo salad spinner receives such stellar reviews because it is an extremely well designed product, that operates on a simple principle, and works fantastically well. Given a choice, almost everyone would prefer fresh, clean vegetables and fruit. However, washing them usually leaves you with the problem of excess water, and that is where the Oxo comes in.

The spinner has three components, the bowl, the basket, and the lid. Put your vegetables, fruit, or whatever you want to drain off excess liquids from, in the basket. Place the basket in the bowl, resting on the center pin at the bottom of the bowl. Release the spring loaded handle, and then while holding down the lid, push down on the handle a few times. The centrifugal force generated from spinning the contents in the basket, draws liquid and small debris to the outer walls of the bowl. What remains in the basket is relatively dry, and excess water and debris can be discarded.

The bowl is made of extra hard plastic, that is shaped so that it is difficult to tip over, even when the basket is spinning at high speed. The rubber on the bottom of the bowl provides traction, and helps keep the bowl from spinning, or tipping over, while you are pumping. There is very little friction between the spinning basket, and the bowl and lid, and it is quite remarkable how long the basket will keep spinning if you just let it spin. There is a button on the top of the lid that acts as a brake, and will slow and stop the basket. To maintain a minimum profile, there is a sliding lever that locks down the spring loaded handle into the lid. Although holding the lid down is recommended, even when spinning at high speed, the lid seems to stay in place pretty securely. It is kind of hard to see the mechanism inside the lid, but hopefully any metal parts are corrosion resistant, as these would probably be the only things that might normally fail.

The Oxo spinner is a little pricey, and takes up some space, but with a near perfect design, it is highly recommended if you enjoy serving a terrific salad. It appears to be made of high quality materials, that should provide excellent results for a very long time, and is available in a variety of colors and sizes. If you get one, the odds are very high that you will love it. Bon appetite!

5.0 out of 5 stars Prettier version of the classic from OXO, August 23, 2009

I purchased this replacement after considering other brands -- saw that the pull
string types etc had mixed reviews. I have to say that the original which lasted
me 8+ years until someone threw the bowl in the dishwasher, was fantastic.
The only con was the fact that the dishwasher destroyed the bowl which cracked up.
Guess my children might have sat on it and broken it etc also, was considering the
stainless steel version, but fell in love with this versions looks, and the handy
light weight feel.

To describe this version, the outside bowl is clear, the inside colander and all
trim are green. Very pleasant to look at vs the clinical clear, black and white looks
of the original. It is beautifully designed with a non- slip base, a lock so that the pop up
handle which you press down to spin can be locked down for storage, and a button
to stop the spin immediately with a brake. All features identical to the old version.

5.0 out of 5 stars Green With Envy, May 21, 2009

I bought this as a gift for someone - and I'm a bit envious as I have the original white one. This one is gorgeous! I love this salad spinner because it works. The pull-string type reverse direction with each pull of the cord and you can never get up to a sufficient speed. This newer model also has a snap out lid liner for easy rinsing. There's a brake on the lid which even Jacques Pepin didn't seem to know about on one of his cooking shows! If you love salads, how can you live without one of these?

After the first use, the spinner mechanism broke! - Just like some other experiences listed here. The interior of the stem was filled with white goo and the plastic was cracked. I am trying with the company to get it fixed. Very sad as I loved the old model which finally cracked at the same place after about 8 years. Hate purchasing prewashed salad mixes and do love dry greens.

Seems sturdy, and makes my greens bone dry with little time and effort. I also like the design.

The box said that the spinning mechanism can be taken apart, and I haven't really tried to do that yet, but it looks as though it could be complicated and annoying.

That said, it spins and dries, and so far I am very happy with it.

Work well. Keep in mind you press down on the top. Do not pound it, it spins with little pressure. After it begins to spin, you can add pressure and increase speed. This way you do not over stress parts. Works quite well.

I wanted this for so long, but didn't want to find a place in my kitchen to store it. I finally purchased it on a carefree whim and then when I bought my first bag of romaine bunches and had to clean them, I couldn't wait to try this. I LOVED IT. I always hated washing salad and waiting forever for the leaves to dry enough to put it away. This takes all that misery away. Plus, I then store the salad in it and it is perfect. Still a bit costly, but it should last a long, long time. Now, if only I liked salad more...

4.0 out of 5 stars Cute and Gets the Job Done, November 6, 2009
This review is from: OXO Good Grips Green Salad Spinner (Kitchen)
This salad spinner has so many useful features. The push top locks into place so it takes up less space. The nifty brake button works really well. It spins fast enough to get the job done.

The only reason we don't use it more often is because in the humid climate we live in we have to dry it completely every time we use it. If we leave even a slight residue of water and store it with the lid on it will never dry and mildews within a day or two. Other than that, we love it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice Spinner, October 14, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: OXO Good Grips Green Salad Spinner (Kitchen)
It does what I bought it to do. One small problem...I have a some arthritis in my fingers so I have trouble when I take the lid apart to clean it. This is not something I have to do often. The tabs you need to press to slide the lid open are just to far apart for me.

Aside from my physical difficulty with the lid, this is a nice spinner. It gets my garden greens dried quickly and I really like that. As others have said, it's attractive. So, If it ends up sitting out on my prep counter for a couple of days, that's fine.

I really like my salad spinner. It does a very good job of spinning the greens dry and it is easy to use. I was very pleased with the service from Amazon, but then, they have always been very prompt and accurate with orders and delivery.
