4.0 out of 5 stars Stylish Modern Ice Bucket Which Doesn't Skimp On Value
OXO Good Grips Plastic Ice Bucket is the "safe choice" your mother or father would be proud of you for buying. It's the ice bucket you saw a commercial for on TV that surprisingly wasn't horrible in reality. To be as concise as possible; it's a nice ice bucket that does it job and is reasonably priced with some very useful tongs included.

2.0 out of 5 stars It works, kind of.. but at a steep price
1. An ice bucket is not rocket science and thus I would expect this kind of product (ie plastic double walled bucket) to cost around... $10-15.00. But after looking around, this was one of the cheaper quality ice buckets.
2. Basically it works... kind of. The irritating thing is that the outer bucket easily comes off when your carrying the bucket around...

If you're an Ice Bucket aficionado of some sort, you probably have more working knowledge of the "better" choices out there. For the rest of us, an ice bucket has to do a couple of things properly. These are:

1) Keep Ice Solid for At Least 4 to 6 Hours
2) Easy to fill and use
3) Stylish enough for display to guests

Everything else not on the list is purely a bonus. On the most important point, the OXO Ice Bucket does an admirable job of keeping ice cubes in form for a good solid 4 hours. I got 6 hours out of the bucket on the condition the bucket was at least half full (50%). Understandably, the less ice in the bucket to start, the quicker the cubes inside would melt. Thus 4 hours is a very honest and admirable amount of time I have measured to have "working, normal sized" ice cubes still in the bucket.

Using the bucket is a breeze. The lid (which is see through) pulls back roughly about 3/4th of the way on its hinge to allow you full access to the very roomy interior. This means that you will never loose the lid or have it misplaced. The down side of having such a lid however is that it can interfere with anything beside the bucket in which the lid is leaning toward - so proper placement is necessary. Also - being see through - the lid isn't the best thermal insulator for the ice. If any heat happens to get inside this particular bucket, it's through the lid. Had OXO used a lid with the same materials they used on the side of the bucket, I could imagine ice longevity times would have increased substantially. Keep in mind that leaving this bucket out on very sunny days can significantly shorten your ice cube life due to direct sunlight shining right through. The lid is strictly a style over substance design about the ice bucket, and I can understand why they choose to do so since it does make it look very pretty. But it isn't very practical when you mill over it in the finer details.

Silver (or silver looking) ice buckets come to mind when talking about present-ability. This bucket really is for the outdoor poolside or the indoor bar in the design department. Black contrast with gray and a clear lid is really more modern looking no matter how you interpret style, so it's nice to have an ice bucket that doesn't look like silverware.

Nice little touches about the bucket is the included "moat" inside to catch melted ice water. Although I thought a more elaborate leveled straining system would be in place - it is basically 4 raised square pegs on the bottom of the bucket that use the space in between them as areas for water to pool. It's kinda simple looking and honestly just works out pretty well, even if the moat is kinda shallow.

The include tongs that come with the bucket are a huge selling point. Alone these quality tongs (and I do mean quality) would probably run you at least 10 dollars if bought separately at your local giant chain store or kitchen supply. What's nice about them is that when you put the tongs in a closed position, you can safely attach it to the side of the bucket on the hinge. It works out well, and is quite practical.

All in all, this is an excellent Ice Bucket for those of you out there really looking to stretch your money. Having used other Ice Buckets in the past, I can safely and honestly tell you that heavy silverwave ice buckets still do a much better job of keeping ice cubes. This OXO Good Grips Plastic Ice Bucket however, is for the "working man and woman" and is really solid in construction, ease of use and appeal.

5.0 out of 5 stars you should not be without this, December 3, 2009

An ice bucket with a sharp set of tongs is truly essential for every good hostess. And although I recently purchased this and have only used it a few times I am very pleased with it. It keeps the ice cold, it does not melt too quickly and it has a see-through lid that slides up. The tongs are also great because they have little teeth and they're nice and sharp. OXO is a quality brand that makes quality items.

4.0 out of 5 stars The perfect ice bucket!, October 5, 2009

I bought this ice bucket for a friend who, not having one, would put out ice cubes in an open bowl when she entertained. So, looking at those available through Amazon, I decided on this OXO bucket, and it couldn't have been a better choice! The bucket is insulated, the top lifts, remaining attached, when one wants cubes; and, best of all, in some respects, the tongs, as they are styled, really do grip the ice cubes, and one isn't losing cubes 'tween the bucket and the glass. The ice bucket is roomy enough to hold considerable ice cubes if necessary, the insulation keeps the cubes in good shape for a considerable period of time, the smokey color makes for a very attractive addition to one's bar area. You won't be disappointed in your purchase.

I was a little surprised by how large it is. This kept ice for a 'awhile', not hours upon hours. The top is not that insulated. Sides seem well insulated. Good quality with sturdy components.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love this! Great for buffet lines., June 25, 2011

This review is from: OXO Good Grips Plastic Ice Bucket with Ice Tongs (Kitchen)
This is the best ice bucket on the market. The flip top is great for entertaining a large number of people, who will tend to forget to cover the ice bucket or not replace the top because their hands are busy juggling a plate and utensils. Because the OXO bucket has the top attached, I found that users in a buffet line will flip the top back on, which keeps the ice from melting. The tongs work very well. They have a good grip so the ice doesn't slip out and fall on the floor or splash the tabletop. It is easy for elderly people and children to handle. What's not to like?

5.0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Solution for Parties, September 16, 2010

This review is from: OXO Good Grips Plastic Ice Bucket with Ice Tongs (Kitchen)
For years, we've put ice in a bowl or some other (really cheap looking) product. It was about time to purchase a good ice bucket that could go out for a casual party or an elegant one - if I ever get around to throwing one of those.

I've looked for awhile and was really pleased to find this bucket with the added bonus of coming with its own ice tongs.

Even though it is plastic, which I think is a bonus since you won't mind having it inside or out, it looks elegant. It has a nice finish, almost metallic at quick glance. The top pivots about 3/4 back so you never loose it or have to place it on a counter while getting ice.

This is a big bucket and should last for an entire party, well, depending on how many friends you have and how much they like to drink.

The tongs hook on the side and have teeth so they will grip the ice easily.
A great purchase that will last a long time.

2. Basically it works... kind of. The irritating thing is that the outer bucket easily comes off when your carrying the bucket around with the handle; what's the point in then having the handle? On a positive note, the tongs are nice and work well. All in all, if you really need an ice bucket, since there are more expensive brands out there, this isn't a bad compromise.

5.0 out of 5 stars Never thought I'd review an Ice Bucket of all things..., June 13, 2011

This review is from: OXO Good Grips Plastic Ice Bucket with Ice Tongs (Kitchen)
I had to write this review. I don't even use ice in my drinks. But I have plenty of friends who do, and threw a party recently where I broke out this ice bucket. I filled the bucket with ice at about 6:30. To my shock, 5 hours later, the ice cubes were mostly intact. Now keep in mind, people had gotten about 3/4 of the ice out of the bucket by then (opened and shut the bucket a lot). I was pretty surprised at how well this thing worked. Not sure when I'll use this thing again but it is pure clutchness at doing what it's supposed to do.
