Love it So Far! (Update: Broke!)
on December 26, 2012
Our shower has no built-in shelves or ledges. Over the years, I've purchased several products that promised to attach to our shower wall and provide us with some much-needed shelf space. None of them have worked. Inevitably, without exception, we brought each one home, followed the directions to attach the unit to our shower wall--some by adhesive, others by suction cups--and watched as they either didn't work in the first place or fell off the wall under even light-weight loads over the course of a few showers. Leave it to the folks at OXO to develop something that actually works!
This unit is nicely designed, so much so that I almost want to use the word "engineered". It's intended to provide a corner shelf for people who either lack shelves in their showers (like us) or who simply need extra space to put stuff in the shower. The mechanism of attachment is brilliant, and is what really shines. Rather than the usual suction cups that either don't adhere stronly enough to the wall in the first place, or which tend to slide down the wall or come loose when you actually try to use the shelf, OXO equipped this unit with two lateral "feet". The feet are covered in a rubber-like material that is slightly sticky to the touch. I am reminded of a recent documentary I watched that explained how geckos feet have evolved to grip to surfaces in such a way that they actually stick and then peel off. I wonder if this technology is based on a similar technology. The high-grip feet are only one part of the system, however; the second is a handle that you push in once you have the shelf in position in the corner of the shower that pushes both feet out in such a way that the firmly stick and push against each wall to provide a secure, stable foundation to hold the shelf up.
It works beautifully! It is super-simple to install (about 5 seconds) and is capable of easily holding 3 or 4 bottles of shampoo and body wash without slipping or losing its grip. After several days, I feel content that this unit is going to stand the test of time. I am planning on getting another one for our other shower.
As is typical with OXO, they can't just make something that works, they have to add little touches that let you know they actually put some thought into the item to make it more functional. There are two loops on either side of the bottom of the shelf for handing things like a back brush, wash cloth, or (in my case) a loofah. There are also 3 or 4 holes in the actual shelf itself that I puzzled over for a few moments when I first saw them before realizing they were there so that you can rest a typical bottle of shampoo upside-down on the shelf (by placing the nozzle into the hole). Nice! The whole unit is plastic and feels sturdy and well-built. The only thing I am concerned about is the metal spring and screws, but I am hoping OXO had enough sense to use rust-free parts. If not, I will surely update this review in a few months.
I really love this shelf and heartily recommend it to anyone who has, like me, been looking for something to fill such a role and is tired of all the junk that floods the market.
UPDATE! IT BROKE!
Ok, I'm not sure if this is OXO's fault or mine. I had about 5 or 6 large bottles of shampoo, body wash, etc on my shelf and it was holding up just fine for weeks. Then, one day, it just came crashing down while I showered, along with everything I was storing on it. *Sigh*.
To their credit, the grips of the shelf were still stuck to the walls of my shower! I had to peel them off with more than a little effort. The break point was that the entire shelf attaches to the grips via two small plastic joints. One of these failed (I guess under the weight). I miss my shelf, though!
I subtracted a star, since this seems like a problem of design--if the rest of the shelf is made so robust, why have the such a weak point. On the other than, I may have gotten over zealous with what I thought it could hold. I may get a replacement and opt to limit it to 3 or 4 regular size bottles max.
