I just used this spatula this morning to turn 3 eggs in a very small pan. Since it is small, it can get under the individual egg without disturbing its neighbors. Since it is silicone, the spatula does not stick to the pan or the egg or carry any, what shall I call it, frying pan debris, with it. It works perfectly. I've only broken one egg since I started using it (2 times a week for about 2 months). The handle is short and curved just right for my purposes.
You can see the "base", which is metal, through the silicone. I don't think it will break through, though, as long as you don't leave it resting in a hot pan, maybe not even then. I think it would take a tremendous amount of use for it to wear through. By then one probably needs a new one anyway.
This is a terrific small spatula and I would recommend it to anyone who needs a small compact spatula.
There are two drawbacks, though. After a few months of use, the silicone starts to absorb the taste of soap, so you won't enjoy licking the spatula for a taste of your meal. For me, eventually, the soap flavor started passing onto the food. Both spatulas did so, so I assume I didn't get a defective one. I boiled the spatulas in vinegar and got the soap taste out. Handwashing helps prevent the soap flavor, but it can be challenging to remember to keep this dishwasher-safe product out of the dishwasher.
The handle also melts if you rest it on the edge of your pan. Be careful!
What I really love is that after I am done cooking something, I can squeegee the excess off easily. There is barely anything left on the pan. This comes in real handy when you have something oily; instead of that oil getting into your dish sponge.
There are other reviews which state that the silicon cracks along the edges. I will relate my experience with this. This is our second one of these. The silicone on the first one ripped over the area where the handle is attached to the metal square. This happened about seven months after we bought it, but to be fair, I was mashing things down like burgers and meats to get more of a sear, and on one occasion, I even mashed potatoes with it.
I cut apart plenty of things while cooking, like veggies or pieces of meat that were too large, and it never split along the edges.
Its simple physics. If you press too hard, the silicon is going to rip. I can tell you from personal experience that it would have to be pressed very hard in order to do this. I also got the larger size of this for when I need to flip eggs or things like steaks or pancakes, but it is a lot bigger and heavier, so I dont use it that much.
By the way, it works great for cookies too! ;)
Slides right under the cookie with ease.
As long as you do not abuse it, you should get plenty of use out of this, and in my humble opinion, it is worth every penny I spent on it.
I purchased three different spatulas from Amazon at the same time to try them out. I don;t really like any of them as my previous Calphalon which they don't seem to make any more.
First, all three of these are made of nylon, plastic, etc. They will melt if subjected to high heat. If that bothers you don't buy one made of plastic.
Calphalon Nylon All Purpose Turner
This one has a nice handle. Other than that the edge is to thick, the turning surface a little small and the surface is weirdly curved almost like a spoon, it is not perfectly flat. It works OK for turning over easy eggs but not so great for other foods. The flat edge is also slightly curved which makes it all but useless for scraping the bottom of a pan.
Pyrex Slotted Turner
Remember I said plastic melts? Well this one has a very fine tapered edge which makes it great for flipping eggs. But you will only be able to flip about three eggs before the edge melts and collapses upon itself destroying that fine edge. This one would be almost perfect if it wasn't for that fine tapered edge.
OXO Good Grips Silicone Cookie Spatula
If you make a lot of cookies this one would be pretty good I think. It is about the right size for cookies but anything else it is useless for, even eggs, it is just to small.
The perfect turner would use the slotted head of the Pyrex Turner, the edge of the OXO and the handle of the Calphalon.

This works extremely well. The silicone conforms to surfaces letting it scrape very effectivly. It is plenty rigid enough to lift steaks etc. Read morePublished 4 days ago by Nicholas Payton
