Perfect! Works great on all cheeses...if you don't need the rubber handle end!,
This review is from: OXO Good Grips Seal and Store Rotary Grater, White (Kitchen)
I have used this to grate dried peppers, Parmesan, Romano, cheddar, pepper jack, and goat cheese. I have to completely disagree with previous negative reviews. I bought this for the grippiness. Little did I know that it does do it all. It works on hard cheeses and soft cheeses. If you don't manhandle it, it will not break...just like most THINGS on this planet. Don't force it. Grind it backwards a couple of times once in a while. That loosens things up a little. Let the grinder do the work. Forcing will break it and is not necessary. It disassembles and washes up great on the top shelf of the dishwasher. The best feature is the ability to keep your cheese fresh while in the refrig. Smart item, easy to use, a great buy and highly recommended. Okay, so after a couple of months the black handle end nob broke off no thanks to my hubby who manhandled it. It still works great even without it.

Nice design...but it's broken too,

I've purchased several different rotary graters and this one had the same result as many of it's other plastic siblings. It too broke within 2 days of use. These plastic graters just aren't built with much strength and should not be used with harder cheeses, or by someone who has a strong grip. The common defect I'm finding in plastic graters is how the rotating arm is attached to the drum. The tiny amount of plastic there isn't desined to withstand shearing forces which is what rotates the drum. When I find a good rotary cheese grater, I'll write a review on it.

Flawed design - had two and they both broke!,

I have gone through two of these graters. The concept is fine (the ability to seal the cheese inside the grater after you are done using it), but the design and manufacturing have resulted in poor execution of the concept.- With cheeses that are not rock hard - such as cheddar or edam, the experience was a disaster, because they just clog up the grater and drum as a paste. - But it gets worse: I was using it and it suddenly started making a clicking sound when I turned the handle, and it seemed to have stopped grating the parmesan in the hopper. It turns out that the metal grating cylinder sheared off from what appears to be a rather weak plastic frame connecting it to the handle. Basically, as several other reviewers here have said, the tiny amount of plastic of the connecting frame isn't designed to withstand shearing forces that rotate the drum. I'm very disappointed as I really had high hopes for this one. Having gone through two of these with the same problem, I couldn't stomach trying my luck with a third, so I've now bought a Zyliss one now - we'll see if it fares better.

works great, but.......,

it didn't last us very long. If you are grating hard cheeses, the plastic construction of the handle makes it very unlikely that it will hold up for a long time. It really should be stronger. Our handle broke off in the middle of grating some parmesan. Other than that I loved how you could seal the cheese inside the grater after you were done using it.

It worked Grate--Until it broke on hard Parmesan Reggiano,

Worked well for a year, comfortable on the hand, and stored the cheese which is a nifty feature.. until I tried to grate some very hard cheese; it did previously grate Parmesan with more moisture. Plastic rotary handle broke. I was going to orderMIU France steel cheese graters on this site, but they do not ship to "outside the United States" (Alaska?!) per the message I got. Further detail revealed a "contiguous" US limitation.

Works as Advertised.,

I was perusing the Amazon sight and noticed this item's reviews. I do not know what the previous reviewers were trying to grate, nails? And by the way, soft, soft cheeses are better sliced anyway. This is a relatively delicate tool and should be handled as such. Accordingly, it will not break. I have had this grater for approximately one year and it has worked flawlessly. I use it to grate hard parmesan cheese and then refrigerate the remaining cheese in the grater. When all the cheese is used, I simply disassemble, wash, dry, and store the grater until its next use. This is how it is advertised to work. I have found this grater to be a handy gadget to have in my kitchen gadgets inventory.

I carefully read most of the reviews for this product before purchasing so I would know what to expect. They mostly said the same thing: either it broke or it worked perfectly. The consensus seemed to say use only hard cheeses, and don't overcrank the handle. We have only used it for parmesan cheese, and so far we've had no problems. It works great so far!

Grater not only grates cheese but is also useful for bakers like myself to grate chocolate over a cake. It is of a good quality and easily cleaned.

Don't give up on this grater!,

This grater stopped working after a few months (the cutting drum started to just spin around during use). I loved the cheese storing feature and did not want to give up on this ingenious gadget, so I examined it closely. Looking inside the cutting drum, I saw that there were little metal tabs that needed to be bent in (using a screwdriver or strong knife) in order to hold the drum in place. It took about three seconds to do it and it has worked perfectly ever since. When I bought another one as a gift I bent them in before giving it. It is so handy to leave the parmesan in the grater between uses if you use it frequently as I do.

Plastic Grater Doesn't Hold Up,
By Picky (Michigan, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: OXO Good Grips Seal and Store Rotary Grater, White (Kitchen)
The concept of this grater is good but the construction isn't strong enough. My grater lasted about a year, then the plastic that holds the metal grating drum broke. Now that I've examined how it broke, it's amazing that it lasted as long as it did. The drum is cradled by very thin plastic strips that are connected on both ends of the drum. One end is open and is where the cheese comes out after grating it. The other end has the handle. When the handle is turned, this creates a sideways force against the strips that hold the drum. If you're grating a hard cheese (typical use of a grater), the force will shear the plastic strips and the grater will no longer work.If the strips and the connection to the handle were stainless steel, the design might work. I like that the grater has a cover with flexible plastic edges that seals the cheese in the compartment that holds the cheese. A plastic cap snaps onto the open end of the drum (where the cheese is despensed). This essentially seals the cheese in the grater so that you can put the whole thing in the fridge, ready for its next use. Don't buy this grater unless Oxo beefs up the way the drum is held. |
