Product Description

OXO's Kettles - The Pressure is On

In 199X, OXO introduced its first Tea Kettle. Safety and practicality were the guiding principles during the development process, and our little Kettle came complete with an innovative steam shield.

Through user feedback, we realized we missed a key consumer insight - that a Tea Kettle, while a practical kitchen tool, is often a centerpiece in the kitchen. Users would leave them out on the stovetop when not in use and some even coordinated their entire kitchen decor around their Kettles. While the steam shield was innovative, it was considered by many to be unsightly.

In 1998, we corrected the aesthetic flaws to our otherwise safe, practical and well-performing Kettle with the Uplift. The kicker is that all of its elegant aesthetics came as a direct result of making the Uplift safe and easy to use.

Problems Identified
  • Handles on tea kettles are positioned too close to the steam and hot water at the spout, making it uncomfortable while pouring
  • Angle of kettle handles combined with weight of filled kettle make it difficult for users to lift and pour without straining wrists
  • Fine motor skills required to open kettle trigger to pour hot water; difficult for many older users to maneuver
  • Small opening on top makes it difficult to clean interior of kettle
The Process
  • The quest for the perfect interaction point between the spout and the handle (so the kettle would not open when carried around filled with water, but would open easily when tipped forward) led us to the current connection between the spout and handle, one that resembles a splash of water.
  • The same connection point was also designed to keep the spout open if the user chose, so that they could keep the Uplift's whistle quiet while boiling water, which is especially handy when preparing an early morning cup of tea.
  • While designing an opening large enough to be easy to clean, we needed to ensure it wasn't so low as to limit the maximum water level, but we still needed to keep it in balance with the spout for aesthetic reasons.
  • Through user research, we learned that steam would sometimes escape from the lid and unfortunately heat the handle, so we added a silicone seal to minimize any unintended heat transfer and keep the kettle safe and easy to use.
OXO's Solutions
  • Large, comfortable handle is angled away from the spout and is heat resistant and non-slip, even when wet
  • Handle angle allows user to hold Kettle comfortably and without wrist strain, whether filled with water or nearly empty, by adjusting grip accordingly
  • Whistle spout opens automatically when Kettle is tipped to pour - no awkward buttons or levers to press
  • Wide opening on top of Kettle enables easy access for cleaning and can also be used as an opening to fill Kettle
The OXO Story

In 1990, OXO staged a revolution (of sorts) by offering an easy-to-use, high-performing alternative to uncomfortable and ineffective kitchen gadgets. OXO's innovative take on the traditional Swivel Peeler, complete with its pudgy black handle, raised consumers' expectations of what could be expected from household products.

Today OXO offers over 800 products, each developed with a close (some might say "obsessive") attention to detail. Our goal is to deliver products that maximize comfort AND performance, illustrating our mission to create innovative consumer products that make everyday living easier.

Ever wonder what makes an OXO product an "OXO Product"?

OXO employees believe there are two rules that should guide product development: First, every new product must deliver a significant improvement over the status quo. Second, the functionality should never be sacrificed to make the product more attractive - above all it should work well.

I spent three months researching tea kettles. My "must have" list was detailed: must be 2 quarts; must have a quiet whistle; must not dribble; must not be expensive but must not be cheaply made; must be colorful, preferably purple. Day after day I read review after review and I kept returning to the Oxo Good Grips Uplift Tea Kettle (in Eggplant, obviously). I decided to take the leap and made the purchase. I cannot have been more thrilled!

The kettle's enamel is beautiful and the whole thing is quite solid. The handle is heat resistant, thick, and sturdy. You simply tilt the kettle to pour and the spout opens automatically, no dribbling. The whistle starts out nice and quiet which is perfect for what I wanted, but it does become loud if you leave it to get to a high boil.

I've had the kettle for about a month now and love it to pieces, it's just perfect. And purple!

Update on 4/19/2012 - The only negative I can say after using this tea kettle for months now is that the lid is really tight and can be hard to pull out to fill the kettle up with water. Other than that I still love it!

Many tea pots I have owned have all had one problem, the handle gets too darn hot to use. Not the OXO Tea Kettle. Beautiful and functional.

The color of this tea kettle is very fun and bright. It is a true BRIGHT grass green, not avocado. The handle can get quite hot if you ignore the whistle and let it sit there a while boiling away. We are very happy with the kettle.

This tea pot was a great buy! The color was represented accurately from the photo. Also the grip of the pot is very comfortable and is in a good location which makes handling it very easy. There is no need for pot holders or towels. The best part is the automatic pour spout. It pops right open when you "tip it over." I have use it several times on a high setting and have noticed no scorch marks or rusting. It is easy to clean and the whistle starts off at a low volume and increases in pitch the longer it is left on, which is perfect for someone like me who forgets about starting the water. It was worth every penny!!

The handle design puts a lot of strain on the screws which attach the handle to the pot. We've had our teakettle for several years, and I've had to tighten the handle screws many times. Finally, one of the screws fell out and is now lost -- making the teakettle very difficult, and almmost unsafe to use. Next time I'll go with a more standard, sturdy design. The top is also fits extremely tight, which makes it very hard to remove. I was disappointed because other reviews had been so positive.

This kettle functions well overall. The handle gets hot like most tea kettles and it is a little loose. Whistle is very loud.

I owned one of these previously. One day, operator error found it burned to a crisp, so I switched to an electric kettle for a while. So glad I am back to the stovetop version. Much more efficient. This kettle boils water much more quickly than my high-end copper-bottomed saucepan or the electric kettle. I love the color too. Who knew I would find anything in the purple range.

The handle never gets hot, so you don't need to use a potholder to take it off the heat. I also fill it through the spout to preserve the seal on the lid, which means that steam never escapes to burn you.

The only thing I wish OXO would do it put the train whistle back in the kettle. I like that the whistle is not super loud, but the train whistle was really unique and fun. However, if you have never had a kettle with that whistle, you won't miss it!

I've wanted an OXY Uplift Tea Kettle for a while now and I just got around to ordering one. I really like the fact I don't have to reach for a lever to open and close the spout cover and the whistle is just the right volume. I couldn't find it in Blue on Amazon, so I had to order it off of eBay. I would have much preferred to have gotten it from Amazon since they have a great return policy. I didn't notice until after I had received it that the eBay vendor didn't even offer the option to return it, so I'm glad I liked it.
