Cheeke Maroo (Washington, DC) - See all my reviews
This review is from: OXO Good Grips Plastic LiquiSeal Travel Mug, Textured Red (Kitchen)
I've had this mug for 6 months. I got it for a long bus commute to work in DC. First, you cannot take the top apart to clean it. After about 3 months, the rubber gaskets started falling out (I have only hand-washed this mug). Annoying, but I could tuck them back in; however, eventually, it became a routine.
Around the 6 month mark, the button on the top started sticking in, so it wouldn't close without working at it, trying to get my fingernail under it to pull it out, and eventually stopped closing at all. I would have to take the top off, and push the plunger back up into it to get it to close.
Tonight after soaking the top in vinegar overnight, I took all the gaskets out and held it up to the light so I could see how dirty it was inside. Crud and gunk (looked like barnacles, no kidding) was all up inside of the top. Ugh.. Yeah.. so here I am.. looking for another mug. Don't buy this thing. Spend a little more money and get something that comes apart.

1.0 out of 5 stars Mug is...meh, August 5, 2009

I bought this mug at a TJ Maxx for $7.99 several months ago because I was looking for something leakproof. For the most part, it is, unless you have a couple of droplets left on top once you pop the mug to the closed position. One hand, pop-button action is a plus.

Hot coffee becomes warm to cold in roughly 1-2 hours; although the mug is double-walled, it's made of plastic, so it's not a good heat retainer. My biggest complaint about this mug is the top is incredibly hard to clean and cannot be taken apart without prying the screws loose. If you drink coffee/tea with creamer or milk, that crud will stay in there, and if anyone has found a way to clean the crevices, let me know! I've attempted to soak overnight with dishwashing liquid to no avail. I put the top to the light and see nasty stuff still clinging to the spring mechanism for the top, makinng me queasy about what I'm ingesting. If you don't clean well, top will continue to have "odors". Bottom line: Great for leakproof, insulation not so good, lid is hideous to clean. I am looking at purchasing a Thermos to replace my OXO.

UPDATE Oct 09: Don't waste your money on OXO. If you are in the market for a trustworthy, leakproof travel mug that seriously keeps your coffee/tea warm for hours - and I mean up to 5-8 hours - I have been greatly pleased with the Thermos 16-oz Stainless Steel Backpack Bottle. The price for it on Amazon seems to go up and down - I bought it for $24-ish. Thermos also has a 12-oz Stainless Steel Tea Tumbler with Infuser ($16-ish), also seriously leakproof and which can also be used for coffee. Both are a cinch to clean and present none of the problems I've encountered with the OXO. I have no hesitation recommending them.

4.0 out of 5 stars Never leaks, doesn't keep things too warm. Also, don't soak the lid., January 23, 2008
I love this travel mug for two reasons: it's spill proof and it has bad insulation.
I'm a college student, so when I walk to class, I like to have something to keep my hands warm during the winter. Because this mug has bad insulation, all the heat leaks out and makes the mug warm, which makes my hands happy during the winter. I don't really care all that much if my coffee is piping hot... I just want something (relatively) warm to drink in the morning. I'm drinking some coffee right now and it's basically luke warm... it's only been an hour and a half since I made the coffee.

I love the spill proof design because when I'm done with my drink, I just throw it in my bag and don't have to worry about it spilling. I hated all the other travel mugs because they would leak just a little bit. Sugary coffee inside of a laptop bag is absolutely terrible. Because they all leaked, i had to carry the mug around in my hand everywhere. I would always lose them. This mug is great because I can just throw it in my bag and not worry about it.

Some things to remember if you buy this mug: the lid is weird. It's a design that's similar to the "push-to-pour" insulated thermos that I've seen. The problem is that if you don't rinse it out quickly, stuff could probably grow in that cramped, unreachable place. After I'm done with my coffee, I always wash the cup and pour out a full cup of water through the lid. The first time though, I soaked the lid in hot water, thinking it might solve something. The water actually got into the lid itself, so I could hear water sloshing around inside, with no way to get it out. I ended up exchanging the mug for a new one. DON'T SOAK THE LID!

Finally, as mentioned by another reviewer...there is a way for the mug to leak. But it's just a little liquid that remains that doesn't drain back into cup after you seal it. I usually just drink that remaining liquid so it doesn't leak.

Overall, for my weird, specified needs, this mug is perfect. I suspect that this mug is not too great for most people, though.
