Product Description

Color: Red

The OXO GOOD GRIPS Silicone Pot Holder is the best of both worlds: 600°F heat resistant silicone on the outside and cool, comfortable fabric on the inside. Protect your hands from heat, spills and burns with non-flammable, stain and steam resistant silicone. The thick, multi-layer fabric liner brings additional thermal insulation, yet lets your hand breathe to prevent sweating. OXO’s unique silicone rib design improves flexibility and dexterity, and provides a secure grip even on slippery surfaces. Your hand will fit securely in the Pot Holder’s pocket, letting you pick up items small and large without burning the top of your hand. At 10 inches long, the Pot Holder is long enough to protect your wrist. When flat on a surface, the Pot Holder doubles as an excellent trivet under hot pots and pans. To easily store and find your Pot Holder in the kitchen, simply use the embedded magnet to hang on steel surfaces or place the silicone hanging loop on a hook. To clean just wipe the Pot Holder with a damp sponge, or wash and dry in the laundry machine.

It insulates me from heat very well.
Noname
They are too stiff, and are way too large for easy grasping and are worse than a mitt because they cover the whole hand without being hand shaped.

Like that it hangs by it's own magnet.

I have 4 other silicone pot holders and they're very stiff and hard to use. They do work well for trivets and can go directly in the dishwasher or sink of water to be washed, but as a pot holder they're way too stiff. These new OXO Good Grips Pot Holders are wonderful! I bake artisan bread in a 7 quart cast iron dutch oven which has to be heated to 500 degrees and it's HOT, HOT, HOT! The first time I baked the bread in the cast iron I used some heavy leather pot holders and 500 degrees was just too hot for them and they were singed. That's when I picked up these pot holders. They work perfectly. They're flexible and they have a mitt to slip your hand into which makes for very easy maneuvering of hot and heavy pans. I don't feel ANY heat coming through these and we're talking 500 degrees of heat...that's pretty impressive. I highly recommend these. I'm tempted to order more just to have an extra set in case they stop making them! They're very nice.

This is a very nice potholder. I like the large size, the pocket to place my hand inside, the handy magnet which lets me hang it on the fridge. It insulates me from heat very well.

I took a pan out of the oven last night using one of these Good Grips and another standard oven mitt and though I did not burn with either one, I did feel heat coming through the oven mitt. I felt no heat coming through Good Grips. Terrific potholder.

Update: 2014: To be fair, I'm raising my rating a star. While I still believe that the shape/design of these are flawed, the fact is, these have become the potholders I automatically look for come cookin' time. (The magnets certainly help. You just kind of fling these at the fridge and they're there to grab.)

I think my reconsideration perhaps speaks more to how poor most potholders perform than the positives of this design. Being silicone, these insulate as well now as they did when they were new (awkwardness issues aside). Compare this to "normal" potholders that seem to have a very short life; they seem fine for a few months, then forever after they only provide you a 3 second window of grabbing that cast iron pan before the screaming begins.

So I'll continue to use these Oxos, while I remain on the lookout for my ideal potholder: Magnets for flinging at the fridge. Protection for the palms AND the backs of your hand. And yes, a shape that caters to those of us with opposable thumbs.

They're out there, somewhere. I know they are.

Original Review: I just cannot understand why these pot holders have so many enthusiastic reviews. Maybe people are praising the concept of silicone, rather than the effectivness of this particular design. I can't imagine that the people at OXO did much testing on these before marketing them.

Do you know why I mention primates in my review title? Because when you put one of these babies on, you won't be able to use your thumb. So get used to gripping things in the most awkward rudimentary way. When one tries to pick up an object like a normal human being, the entire front (the part with the silicone that protects you from the searing heat) shifts forward. There's no flex, no crevice formed.

I ordered both this oxo and the caphalon twill pot holder that is rated highly at amazon, so I could decide which one to keep. After a couple of uses, it's clear that the Caphalon is the keeper, and I'm sending this OXO back to amazon.

The OXO seems to be trying too hard to be all things to everyone and just comes off confused. It has the super-cleanable plastic surface, but on the other side it has a very fuzzy dirt-attracting hard-to-clean pocket. It's not sure whether to say "stains are no problem for me", or "I'm afraid, very afraid, of stains".

The seams and weird folding pattern of the OXO mean that it simply isn't comfortable to do what one expects to do with it: stick your hand in the pocket and grab something hot with it. It's not hard or uncomfortable, but it just feels like you're jamming a square peg in a round hole.

The overall quality of the OXO was on the cheap end; places that could have received double stitching were only single stitched and it felt like it wouldn't last as long as the caphalon. Perhaps most damningly I was afraid to throw it in the clothes washer due to the poor stitching on the plastic parts. And the visual look was just weird, catching your eye with the high contrast ribs but for no good reason.

The Caphalon feels effortless to use, looks elegant, and feels like it'll be easy to care for by throwing the whole thing in the washer. There's nothing wrong with the OXO but it just doesn't feel as good as the Caphalon.

I read the other reviews and thought it would be easily bent to hold the edge of a pot/dish. To my disappointment, it isn't that flexible. I mainly use it as a trivet now and it's not bad for that purpose. I found the magnet is not too strong either, but since it's got a little ring on top, it can be hung easily anywhere there's a hook. I generally found the product so-so and am not likely to order it again.

So far, so good - I've used this when I cook with my cast iron skillet. Having the magnet is really helpful because I just slap it onto the side of my refrigerator when I'm not using it. I love the color - I got Cherry Red - and the fact that my entire hand slips into it. Only three stars though because with a really heavy skillet, I can't get a good firm grip because I can't adequately use my thumb and the handle will turn a bit inside the silicone holder.
