Better than my oven mitt,
This review is from: OXO Good Grips Silicone Pot Holder with Magnet (Kitchen)
This is a very nice potholder. I like the large size, the pocket to place my hand inside, the handy magnet which lets me hang it on the fridge. It insulates me from heat very well.
I took a pan out of the oven last night using one of these Good Grips and another standard oven mitt and though I did not burn with either one, I did feel heat coming through the oven mitt. I felt no heat coming through Good Grips. Terrific potholder.

Best silicone pot holder I've ever used.,

I have 4 other silicone pot holders and they're very stiff and hard to use. They do work well for trivets and can go directly in the dishwasher or sink of water to be washed, but as a pot holder they're way too stiff. These new OXO Good Grips Pot Holders are wonderful! I bake artisan bread in a 7 quart cast iron dutch oven which has to be heated to 500 degrees and it's HOT, HOT, HOT! The first time I baked the bread in the cast iron I used some heavy leather pot holders and 500 degrees was just too hot for them and they were singed. That's when I picked up these pot holders. They work perfectly. They're flexible and they have a mitt to slip your hand into which makes for very easy maneuvering of hot and heavy pans. I don't feel ANY heat coming through these and we're talking 500 degrees of heat...that's pretty impressive. I highly recommend these. I'm tempted to order more just to have an extra set in case they stop making them! They're very nice.

simply the best,
This review is from: OXO Good Grips Silicone Pot Holder with Magnet (Kitchen)
These potholders are not like any of the other silicone ones. They have little strips of silicone along the front and so therefore can bend really easily-and grip really well. They have pockets on the back to slip your hands into when you have a "potholder emergency". They have little strong magnets so you can hang them up on anything magnetic and make them easy to find and easy to slip your hands into. Also they come in many soft colors to compliment your decor.I got my first pair on speculation-I have bought many a silicone object and learned after I bought them that they are too stiff, hard to find, uncomfortable to work with, harsh colors, etc. So when I discovered how much I loved these and went back to get some more for relatives and friends I found they had sold out. Obviously there has been a strong pent-up need for a good-silicone potholder!Oxo has figured this one out and here I am again to buy some more.

Not very flexible for a pot holder,

This review is from: OXO Good Grips Silicone Pot Holder with Magnet, Blueberry Blue (Kitchen)
I read the other reviews and thought it would be easily bent to hold the edge of a pot/dish. To my disappointment, it isn't that flexible. I mainly use it as a trivet now and it's not bad for that purpose. I found the magnet is not too strong either, but since it's got a little ring on top, it can be hung easily anywhere there's a hook. I generally found the product so-so and am not likely to order it again.

I prefer the Caphalon pot holders,

I ordered both this oxo and the caphalon twill pot holder that is rated highly at amazon, so I could decide which one to keep. After a couple of uses, it's clear that the Caphalon is the keeper, and I'm sending this OXO back to amazon.
The OXO seems to be trying too hard to be all things to everyone and just comes off confused. It has the super-cleanable plastic surface, but on the other side it has a very fuzzy dirt-attracting hard-to-clean pocket. It's not sure whether to say "stains are no problem for me", or "I'm afraid, very afraid, of stains". The seams and weird folding pattern of the OXO mean that it simply isn't comfortable to do what one expects to do with it: stick your hand in the pocket and grab something hot with it. It's not hard or uncomfortable, but it just feels like you're jamming a square peg in a round hole. The overall quality of the OXO was on the cheap end; places that could have received double stitching were only single stitched and it felt like it wouldn't last as long as the caphalon. Perhaps most damningly I was afraid to throw it in the clothes washer due to the poor stitching on the plastic parts. And the visual look was just weird, catching your eye with the high contrast ribs but for no good reason. The Caphalon feels effortless to use, looks elegant, and feels like it'll be easy to care for by throwing the whole thing in the washer. There's nothing wrong with the OXO but it just doesn't feel as good as the Caphalon.

Bright and cute and the magnet is really helpful,

So far, so good - I've used this when I cook with my cast iron skillet. Having the magnet is really helpful because I just slap it onto the side of my refrigerator when I'm not using it. I love the color - I got Cherry Red - and the fact that my entire hand slips into it. Only three stars though because with a really heavy skillet, I can't get a good firm grip because I can't adequately use my thumb and the handle will turn a bit inside the silicone holder.

While I like the confidence provided by using silicone pot holders, often my small hands don't allow sufficient control to be comfortable. This mitt takes care of that problem as it is more flexible than others that are 100% silicone. Best of both worlds.

Great pot holders. Magnets were better in older versions.,

Used the first pair we got for over 3 years. Nice product.Very practical sewn-in magnets hold them to your oven door or any other steel surface. New ones are almost identical except they "cheaped out" on the magnets. The new weaker magnets now let the pot holders just slide down the oven door and fall to the floor.

Great product but slightly hard to operate,

This review is from: OXO Good Grips Silicone Pot Holder with Magnet, Licorice Black (Kitchen)
This is a well constructed product and it serves it's purpose quite well. The only reason I'm giving it 4 stars and not 5 is that that way your hand goes in the back and the product folds in half tends to make part of the holder get into whatever food might be in the container you're holding. There is a bit of extra material to cover the top of the thumb area and it tends to pick up stuff ever once and a while. Other than that, this is versatile. Can be used as a pot holder or to place hot objects on a table or place cloth as well. Very well insulated.

Does the job but magnet fell out.,

This review is from: OXO Good Grips Silicone Pot Holder with Magnet, Licorice Black (Kitchen)
Works best as a pad to set things on. Using as an oven mitt is awkward but possible. You may need to be attentive to not burn yourself due to the small coverage area (does not cover wrist or upper hand if you have small hands). I liked the ability to quickly snap it onto the side of the fridge vs. cluttering the counter or stovetop. Unfortunately, the magnet tore through the thin backing fabric after 4-5 months of average use. Also, the black dye used on the fabric left lots of marks on the side of my fridge. Scrubbing with soap, water and a sponge removed this, but it always looked dirty when the magnet was still inside the backing, not to mention a pain in the rear.
Does the job for the price, but has a number of design flaws. |
