Given that I focus on Italian food, we have more than our share of fried food. Whenever you are making cannoli, fritto misto or spingi the grease is splattering everywhere. There is nothing I hate more than cleaning the kitchen after frying something.

This splatter screen has very small holes on a perforated surface. The holes allow steam to escape and contain most, but not all, of the splattering grease. They also keep you from looking into the pan while the food is frying. Given that you have to lift the screen to see inside the pan, there is a little grease to clean up after using this screen. The clean up is easier than with a traditional splatter screen.

I also like that the handle folds up on this screen making it easier to store. Overall, I would recommend this product.

You have to be careful when you lift it off the pan that you keep it horizontal because if you raise it to a vertical position, it will double back and you will risk getting hot grease, or hot water/steam on you.

As far as the amount of splatter control, I don't find that it is a lot better than normal splatter screens. I have to lay a paper towel over the top while frying as there still is too much splatter.

I find that the fitting on top of pans is about somewhat better than a regular splatter screen, but not as good as I was expecting.

I bought a new dishwasher that the racks are adjustable, but it still will only fit in one place in my dishwasher or it will flop around.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Quality, August 23, 2006
This review is from: OXO Good Grips Splatter Screen with Folding Handle (Kitchen)
For a kitchen gadget that you normally categorize as a "can do without" item, I have found this a very useful kitchen tool. I had used the mesh type before and found they didn't last and were a pain to clean. This is a quality item. It is easy to clean and does it's job very well.

4.0 out of 5 stars Best Ever, October 23, 2007

I've purchased this item about 3 months ago, and I love it. When I first got it in I was a bit suprised and upset. Because the screen was metal and not mesh. But the first time I used this and had to clean it. I realized that the metal was much better then the mesh. Its so much easier to clean then mesh. You don't have to worry about little pieces of things getting stuck in the holes and you pick at the mesh to get it out. An then the mesh is messed up because you picked at it and then the mesh becomes misshaped. All in all this is a really good product. I like it so much, I buying a few for Christmas presents for family.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Is Great!, June 11, 2007

Wow, this is a vast improvement over the ordinary splatter screens you can get anywhere. First of all, it's not made of the standard screening like in window screens. It's made of a sheet of perforated stainless steel - like a perforated pizza pan but with smaller holes. Sooo much easier to clean and you don't have to be careful not to poke a hole in it or dent it when cleaning and storing it. It also has 3 circular "ribs" in it that allow it to sit securely on different size skillets and pans. No more slipping off the skillet. And the sturdy, folding handle is so clever. You can really wash this in the dishwasher because it's so sturdy and with the handle folded down, it fits!!! In my opinion, this is definitely worth the extra money and you probably won't ever have to replace it.

I've seen cheaper versions at Target and honestly, I haven't tried them, but this one is SO nice and SO sturdy that I trust it completely. It cleans easy and I can already tell will last a long time.

3.0 out of 5 stars ergonomics good but holes are too big to block spatter, November 22, 2009

This is the first Oxo item that I've been disappointed with. The problem is that the holes are two large and it doesn't do a good job catching spatter. Also, there's a big gap under the handle so grease can fly up and burn your fingers when you're grab the handle.

It does block about 3/4ths of the splatter, but you're better off buying a good fine mesh screen like the cuisipro or amco pro

Like other reviewers, I have tried the cheaper ones and either they don't work or aren't durable. Although this is a bit pricey, I expect it will last longer than I will. I really enjoy that the handle folds, making it easier to store and put in the dishwasher. If you do any frying or stove top browning at all, this is the splatter screen to own.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Necessity For The Complete Kitchen, February 4, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: OXO Good Grips Splatter Screen with Folding Handle (Kitchen)
I have quite a few pieces of OXO hardware in my kitchen, and am always impressed by the value proposition they bring with them. While not as high end as some products, they are generally very well designed and manufactured, and are extremely durable. This Good Grips splatter screen is no exception to the rule: it is an excellent product for the money.

The screen is not a traditional mesh screen, rather, it's a solid piece of stainless steel with perforations in it to allow steam to escape. The screen fits any pan up to thirteen inches in diameter, and has several concentric rings which helps it sit properly atop most frying pans.

The screen, while very good, is not perfect. The handle is a design compromise that I would have wished to be better engineered. It folds for easy storage, which is a great feature, but doesn't positively lock in place. Although by design it shouldn't ever fold while in use, I have found that inattention can occasionally result in it starting to fold unexpectedly. It contains grease spatter very well, but the price paid for the perforated stainless is that you can't observe the food cooking in the pan during use without lifting the lid. Again, this is a minor consideration, but I think these two things in combination are worthy of a one star penalty.

I have used this screen very frequently, and it's my favorite splatter screen of any sort that I have ever used. It's durable, well made, easy to store and ingeniously designed: I recommend it to cooks everywhere.
