It's the Little Things

At OXO, we consistently develop products that address even the tiniest of pet peeves, because we know it’s the little things that make the biggest difference. While developing this product, we used an oxygen meter to measure the aeration of each glass after pouring.

Good Tip: Even the least expensive red wine can benefit from aeration, so don’t save this just for special occasions!

OXO is dedicated to providing innovative consumer products that make everyday living easier.

How do we do it? We study people – lefties and righties, male and female, young and old – interacting with products and identify ways to make them better. Our “question everything” process and relentless attention to detail uncover the best solutions for slicing, peeling, whisking, baking, stirring, washing, scrubbing, dusting, storing and organizing.

Oxo's steel aerating pourer takes up minimal space and is simple to use.
Tim Drake
It makes the wine flow from the bottle in a widened stream, helping to aerate the wine, minimize spills, and make it taste better.
Bryan Carey
I justify the 3 star rating as this product is advertised as an "Aerating Wine Pourer" and not a "Pouring Aerator".

Devices like this, as well as decanters are a bit controversial in wine circles. I operate on the periphery of such groups, but I know enough wine tasting aficionados to be conversant with both schools:

School #1: I never use aerators or decanters. The natural aging of the wine as it is opened fascinates me and I enjoy each glass as different from the last.

School #2: Aerating/decanting is the easiest way to open up a wine especially at a party when you have to pour fast to keep up with your guests.

I've used a decanter for a couple years and I find myself more in line with School #2. I have a fondness for reasonably cheap young Spanish reds. I find that they tend to benefit from being open for about a half hour and really benefit from being decanted for a while. I was curious to see if this aerator had a similar effect.

Because not everyone has access to nice, cheap Spanish reds, I decided to test with another cheap red, the Trader Joe's Three Buck Chuck Shiraz.

I poured four glasses of wine. Two without aeration, two with. My wife and I drank one of each immediately and the others after thirty minutes.

The first glasses produced an immediate positive impression in favor of aeration. The aerated wine was smoother and more palatable, with much of its roughness eliminated.

After thirty minutes we tried the second set of glasses. My wife didn't know which was which, but we both agreed that although both glasses had mellowed, the aerated wine was still smoother.

Not terribly scientific, but our anecdotal evidence suggests the OXO SteeL Wine Aerator/Pourer is a worthwhile investment for lovers of young reds.

Recommended.

This aerator/pourer is convenient and very portable. It really helps pour wine without any spills despite the funky design. It's also space saving and easy to take on trips.

However, the Vinturi has a much better aeration effect than this pourer. With a Vinturi, the effect is immediately noticeable and the wine is opened up. With this pourer, the wine feels slightly aerated but does not open up as much as with the Vinturi.

The Vinturi is more expensive, messier as wine drips from the aerator into the rubber base that holds it and there is clean up required. You have to pour slower too out of the Vinturi or it can overflow. This aerator pourer clean up easy and since it sits on top of the bottle it's non-messy. However, it barely aerates the wine as the wine flows out rapidly out of this pourer without really mixing with air other than a few bubbles in the glass. I'd still use it over nothing at all but for real aeration I prefer the Vinturi.

I must admit that I don't have the kind of sensitive palate needed to differentiate between wine that has been aerated and wine that has not. However, the aerator/pourer forms a tight, reliable seal and is aesthetically pleasing, to boot. It adds class to a bottle of wine and is a great conversation piece when used during dinner with company. Another great product from OXO.

I'm not a wine connoisseur, but I know enough to know which wines I enjoy. I'm not sure that I can tell the value of aeration with my palette, but I'm always up for an interesting kitchen devices. From a purely ascetic aspect, it makes pouring glasses at the table a little more interesting, watching the wine bubble through the clear spout.

it definitely makes spilling less possible, since the pour seems a bit more controlled. So, I'm not sure how well it aerates, but I'll continue to use it for its visual appeal at the least.

I am very satisfied with this product, it does exactly what is says it will do. The ribbed plastic base fits snugly in a variety of wine bottle, and it looks elegant. The wine pours easily (and stylishly, too, if I may add!)

For a quick and easy aeration, you could do a lot worse. Of course, if you are going to go to the trouble and expense of buying a wine that needs to be aerated, you should stick to the classic method of decanting. Get a nice decanter to complete the show.

But if you're looking for a quick method, to enhance the flavor of mid-range bottles, this is a good pick-up.

This is a simple, cork-like aerator with a quill at one end and a plastic spout on the other end. You uncork your wine, shove the plastic cork into the bottle and pour into a glass or decanter. The wine is aerated as it flows, air coming in the flat plate of the spout and bubbling along as the wine flows into your glass. I tried it out on some Argentinian cabernet. I tasted the wine straight from bottle to glass, then from aerator to glass. (No food on palate.) It seemed to aerate and be somewhat improved.

It is relatively simple to use, and a good tool to have on hand if you are in a hurry to open a good bottle of wine and know you have to let it aerate. French burgundy is one wine that really opens up when you let it aerate, for example. So does pinot noir (in particular. Most wines benefit from aeration.) But it's easy to forget to plan ahead. So I think this would be great to have on hand if you feel like celebrating and want to open a good bottle that needs some air--and you are impatient. This makes a very nice gift along with a good corkscrew and perhaps a nice bottle of wine.
