Wizard continues to produce information, maps and photographs that are all first-rate, and--even better! Honolulu Star Advertiser

Book Description

Most travel titles are put together in a few weeks by visiting travel writers. Wizard guidebooks take over a year to compile and the writers are residents who personally and anonymously review every facet of the island. Their maps are the best you'll find. From restaurants to helicopter companies to scuba to beaches to trails. They see it all and show you the best the island has to offer. They also reveal who's the worst and who to stay away from. All told in a frank, humorous way that keeps the reading fun.

Without telling our Oahu dwelling friend what the recommendations were in this book, he ended up picking hikes and places to eat for us that were listed in this book as things to do. So, I'd regard this book as the real deal - these are the cool things you should do and see while you are on Oahu. We even taught our friend (who has lived there for 15 years) a thing or two based on what was written in the book. The only thing I didn't care for in this book was the writing style - it reminded me of one of those goofy tour guides who tries to inject comedy as much as possible. I'm all for a good laugh, but when I'm reading a guide book, I really just want to know the facts. I'd definitely buy this book for someone who was looking to vacation on Oahu if they don't already have a local contact.

You cannot see the photos or maps needed on the kindle version of the book.
The tips are much better on other islands.

Just got back from Oahu, the info in the book was right on the money. I wish I had read it much earlier though, several things I wanted to see - like Pearl Harbor and ShagriLa - have advance reservations. By the time I read the book it was too late to get reservations to either. I would recommend this book as the only one you would need to enjoy Oahu.

I recently returned from my first, hopely not my last, trip to Oahu and I found Oahu Revealed to be invaluable. In the ten days I was there, I think I referred to it at least 50 times. The maps were so helpful as the highways are absolutely as confusing as described in the book. I stayed with my nephew at Scofield barracks. He's been there 2 years and I was able to take him to places described in Oahu Revealed that he had never been to and didn't know about. For instance, he had never even heard about The Valley of the Temples in Kane'Ohe and we loved it so much, we went there twice! The map in Oahu Revealed led us straight there.

My only disappointment is that the 4th edition leaves out the review of my favorite place to eat, Maui Mikes in Waihaiwa. Definitely a must do!! I'm hoping to go back next year and take a side trip to either Maui or Kauai and I can guarantee you that I will be purchasing his guidebooks for both before I go. Highly entertaining and highly recommended!

Most guidebooks are written in a leaden style: they provide information without giving you much of sense of the place. Doughty's book is different. He really knows Oahu, and provides an insider view that includes some of the nasty bits about local politics, as well as a candid "take" on the less - than - entrancing aspects of Honolulu. Yet, overall, his book is positive in tone and replete with useful information on the many beautiful places to visit. In short, it provides a candid overview that will steer the visitor towards what is really worth seeing and away from the tourist traps that abound on the island. A most unusual and definitely indispensable guide that will help you know the place before you even arrive there. The fact that Doughty also has a lively sense of humor only makes his book that much more attractive. Locals regard Oahu Revealed as the best guide to their island paradise, as will visitors who follow its recommendations.

This is one of the few travel books I have read from cover to cover, owing to its brief but lively historical narratives as well as its straightforward discussion of places to visit, or to avoid. Mr. Doughty's style is both interesting and entertaining. After visiting some of the places he discusses (such as the Polynesian Cultural Center), I didn't always agree with his comments, but one of the pleasures of this book is that he admits he has biases, and does his best to reveal them so that you can make your own judgments. Our recent trip to Honolulu and the North Shore was richer and more enjoyable than we expected, owing at least partly to this book.

We just returned from Hawaii and used this travel book for our family vacation. The information was excellent and very accurate, and I'd highly recommend the book. I really enjoyed the authors authentic voice and integrity...and found the book a trustworthy resource. We saved a great deal of money by following his advice and recommendations. We used the book to find attractions, drive the North Shore using a rental car, visit hidden beaches and find good places to eat. It was easy to use and well organized by topic, such as attractions, dining and hotels. We brought two travel books to Hawaii and this was the only book we ended up using because it was so informative. Save room in your luggage and bring this book everywhere you go!

I downloaded it before we left and after we flew into Hawaii I had to use my Amazon user name and pwd to use the app (which I did not have with me on my vacation). Had to call home and get this info. App did not name smaller roads which was a pain!! Used Navigation app on my phone for travel and turning instructions which we needed to get around the city (very little signage for road changes and identification of sites and approaching road #). I would not purchase it again if I knew then what I know now. Did use it for some sites, restaurants, hotels took his choices on better choices and food costs expectations, like eat here for breakfast only, too pricey for what you get otherwise.
