I purchased this book because I had heard various stories about the excavations on Oak Island (near Nova Scotia) which have taken place over the past two centuries. Supposedly, there is a complex, man-made construction in the form of a pit or tunnel. Supposedly, there is buried treasure in the pit. I bought the book hoping to learn the facts associated with the attempts to unearth the secrets of Oak Island. I also thought I would hear possible explanations or hypotheses about what might be down there and who might have constructed the pit. Instead, I wasted my money on what is probably the most poorly written book I've ever read. The editor(s) should be fired for allowing the manuscript to become published. The authors cannot complete a thought without introducing some tangential idea that truly has nothing to do with the paragraph's contents. This makes the book difficult to read but that might be their intention. If anyone is looking for an overview of the goings on at Oak Island, this IS NOT the book you should buy. Don't waste your money.

1.0 out of 5 stars Complete and utter rubbish, February 14, 2002
This review is from: The Oak Island Mystery: The Secret of the World's Greatest Treasure Hunt (Paperback)
I have researched the Oak Island "mystery" for many years from the viewpoint of skeptic and folklorist and still cannot believe what I found in this book. Fanthorpe, a former pulp science fiction writer from the UK, spends the first part of the book reviewing the story of the infamous 'Money Pit'--a procedure that all Oak Island authors feel compelled to emulate despite the fact that the tale is well documented in numerous earlier works. He then launches into a poorly constructed, patched together list of coincidences and assumptions in order to link the island to the Templars--one of his favourite conspiracy groups. In a word, he fails.

The book is rife with "wallpaper" phrases (e.g. "of course it follows that," "clearly," and "from this it is obvious...") that show the author has no actual evidence. In order to conceal this shortcoming he resorts to grand, unfounded assertions, but overall the book is rather like a Gilbert and Sullivan operetta: full of words and music but signifying...nothing.

The credulous will undoubtedly enjoy it, but anyone who thinks the book will offer an even marginally rational viewpoint will be sadly disappointed. Fanthorpe offers no reference material other than the usual, tired old books that are in themselves massively flawed, so I suppose this should be expected. Don't waste your time or money.

I am not a follower of the Oak Island mystery, just someone who read an interesting article in Rolling Stone about the mystery and then went in search of more detail. This book is badly written, confusing and overly presumptive. Do not buy!

1.0 out of 5 stars not very good, September 16, 2004
This review is from: The Oak Island Mystery: The Secret of the World's Greatest Treasure Hunt (Paperback)
As a fan of The Oak Island Mystery, I book this book on the spot. When the authors talk about Oak Island, the book moves along. But, when they start going off on their own theories, you seem to get lost easily. Their claim " ...have finally solved the sinister riddle of Oak Island...." is the farthest thing from the truth. I'm sorry I wasted my money on this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable,Challenging and Appreciated, October 24, 2007
This review is from: The Oak Island Mystery: The Secret of the World's Greatest Treasure Hunt (Paperback)
"The Oak Island Mystery: The Secret of the World's Greatest Treasure Hunt" by Lionel and Patricia Fanthorpe.

I thoroughly enjoyed this Oak Island read as I felt the author wasn't just regurgitating the same same but challenged the reader to think outside the box. Whose box? Well with this book you have choices and decisions to make for yourself. Although giving his interpretation of the known theories I particularly enjoyed his sharing George Youngs "Coptic Christian" religeous refugee's theory. Most interesting. His reaching back through the various time lines of history was as well challenging, overwheling at times and information overload. You'll learn somthing of value when you read this book. Comparing compelling similarieties to the the Rennes-le-Chateau and Glozar were of particular interest. I wonder if Lionel embraces the multi use over time theory?

I reccomend this excellently written book to any Oak Island enthusiast who truly enjoys getting the mental juices flowing. If your a skeptic I have no advice for you because you shouldn't be here anyway  you don't believe in Oak Island remember!

5.0 out of 5 stars New insights into an old mystery!, June 21, 2000

This review is from: The Oak Island Mystery: The Secret of the World's Greatest Treasure Hunt (Paperback)
After reading the latest book regarding the Oak Island Mystery, I found it a facinating read. Especially regarding the possibilities of the Knights Templar being involved. (This book came out long BEFORE the Stephen Sora book on the same subject) I'd highly recommend this title to anyone who seeks further answers/hypothosis pertainting to the mysterious Oak Island Money Pit story. I commend the authors for their marvelous insights and research on this puzzle of the century. This book is a must for any serious researcher. Let the uninitiated beware. I give this book a hearty 2 THUMBS UP!

I read, with much astonishment, the review posted by a reader from Calmest, SC on the Oak Island Mystery by Lionel and Patricia Fanthorpe. I have come to the conclusion that we must have read different book!

As a student of the para-normal and things Mysterious, I have always found the works of Lionel and Patricia Fanthorpe essential, and fascination reading.

Their books are well researched, and written with a clarity, and just a touch of humour , which makes reading their work such a pleasure.

The Oak Island Mystery is no exception in my humble opinion. This book is not a waste of money for anyone who wants the facts and conclusions presented by a noted, and notable authority on the Mysteries of life, which Lionel Fanthorpe undoubtedly is. Nor is it a waste of money for anyone who just wants a thundering good read!

I find it strange that anonymous from Clemson could not understand Lionels writing,(maybe that is why they failed to put a name against the review)another mystery perhaps?.. I find all his books very interesting and thought provoking. More power to your pen Lionel as we all love your writings.

Regarding the reveiw of Clemson. I have recently completed an in-depth study of Oak Island and my revelations will answer many questions. Already I have impressed the owners working on the island and will try to make a deal to recover the treasure some time in the future. I have just read an excellent book called "The Oak Island Mystery" and can speak with some authority on the mysterious place. This book is both accurate and interesting, I can recommend it unreservedly. For the present I cant disclose my discoveries, but among the first to know will be Lionel & Patricia.
