Cool, but a bit small, June 13, 2011
This review is from: Oakley Men's Checkpoint Vertical Computer Bag (Sports)
I have an 11" MacBook Air, and wanted a bag that was a bit more compact than your standard 15" laptop monster. This bag is definitely smaller than your standard laptop bag, which is a pro and a con at the same time. It turns out I carry a bit more than I thought, and this makes things a bit messy.
I carry my power supply with me all the time, and this takes up the entire front pocket. I also have a wireless access point and a Zagg Sparq, a few flash drives, wireless mouse, some earbud headphones, and a checkbook. That's about it; any more, and things would become too cluttered.
The bag definitely looks cool, and is comfortable to carry. It's well padded (I'm a bit protective of my MacBook), and things are pretty easily accessed. In fact, the bag zips down and folds completely open, which allows you easy access to anything in it. It has a very thin profile, and the zippers are fat, easy to use, and don't get snagged.
However, there's no swivel on the strap, which inevitably causes it to get twisted when I pick it up to throw it on my shoulder. Also, there's a pocket on the front of the bag for your phone that's iPhone-sized. I'm definitely not throwing my phone on the *outside* of my bag where it'll get crushed when I bump up against something. The pocket next to that on the outside is for a water bottle. I don't carry a water bottle with me, but if I did, it wouldn't be attached to the same bag I carry a $1,200 laptop in. Water + electronics = bad juju.
If you're only carrying your laptop and a few other items, this bag is quite great. The more you carry, however, the less great it becomes, especially for the price. :)
