more of the same (in a good way),

This review is from: Oasis (Audio CD)
This album is more of the same as 1999's stunning "Intershop" (hands down the best electronic release of that year), well, at least 4 of the 8 tracks (I have the LP) are good enough to compare to that album which is why I give it 4 stars rather than 3. The other remaining tracks are pretty, like the two Cocteau Twins-ish tracks, but quite uninteresting. Olaf Dettinger is one of the VERY few producers whose tracks I could excuse for being very simple. Simplicity + brilliance is extremely difficult to pull off, especially after repeated listens.

Dettinger/Oasis,
By Jon Neal (Greensboro, NC USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Oasis (Audio CD)
In my opinion, one of the best producers out there. Dettinger is a part of the Cologne Kompakt minimal tech/house scene but his work is more lush, subtle-- maybe more "musical"-- than that of his peers. A very understated record, not too much in the way of beats and nothing really for the dancefloor, but captivating just the same. Some reference points would be Oval, the quieter Autechre tracks, and maybe "Music for 18 Musicians." Sort of. Early morning or late night. Try it, you'll like it.

Pure Ambient Bliss,
By kirbytrap (Houston, TX United States) - See all my reviews

Dettinger has done it again, pure ambient bliss. The first track lulls you in with a loop that sounds like distorted cathedral bells in a dreary winter town square. At first it was my least favorite track but now I love it, and I know what Dettinger was trying to do in providing an intro mood-setting piece for the work. I love this CD because it allows me to drift away while still getting my work done, if that makes sense. If you work in the creative field like I do, you know how hard it is to find music like that. This is a complete work that is most enjoyed when listened to straight through. It could be compared to a mellow Future Sound of London, another one of my all time favorite bands. Oasis is dreamy and atmospheric yet has just enough rhythm to keep your head bobbing. Too bad Amazon does not appear to carry Dettinger's previous release, Intershop, which is equally amazing.
