Item was easy to install, worked as expected.

I would have liked to try the flush install, from the back, but didn't think I would be able to get to the area where I needed these.
Jason Melvin
The insert can be difficult to place back in the panel surround since it fits tightly, and once it seats, it "clicks" in.

This is my second access panel I have purchased. I used the first for access to a plug behind a corner cabinet in my remodeled kitchen. By code you must have access to electrical outlets, and this allowed me to keep access, at the same time having a clean look inside the cabinet. The second panel is used in the basement as an access hole to pipes in the remodeled kitchen. Instead of repairing the drywall, I installed this so I could keep access in the event something would need to be changed or accessed, since the hole was under the kitchen sink. It blends very well with the ceiling and so far no one has noticed unless I pointed it out. The ceiling is painted flat white.

The panel has a bevel around the opening so your hole doesn't have to be perfect, and a simple bit of adhesive (I used Liquid Nails) on the backside of the bevel, sliding it in the hole will make it look very professional and secure the bezel to the opening.. The insert that covers the opening fits very tightly, so it will not come off by accident, and might even require a screwdriver or similar device to open the access hole. This can be install on a ceiling without worrying about the insert falling out. The insert can be difficult to place back in the panel surround since it fits tightly, and once it seats, it "clicks" in.

I will continue to turn to Oatey Access Panels when I have the need, especially during a bathroom remodel in the future, so I can access any pipes around the tube if needed.

If you have to cut in to drywall, this is a great alternative to repairing the drywall, and it gives you the convenience of future access if needed.

Ditto other reviewers about quality and ease of install.

The installation directions for flush mounting say to cut a 6"x9" opening. That's too small. 6-3/8" x 9-3/8" fits perfectly. You need a little slack space- don't force the panel at all, or the access cover may be almost impossible to remove- a contractor did that when he installed one for me years ago.

Yes, it does say to use the panel as a template. But I was installing it in a ceiling, and found it almost impossible to reach past the flange to mark the outline while holding the panel in place. (I don't have the luxury of a helper.) I just marked it with an L-square.

Cutting out drywall- I used a rotary tool (e.g. Dremel) with a blunt-end drywall bit. (First throw the breaker for any power wiring that might be in the wall). It took about 30 seconds to cut out the hole. The blunt end keeps you from going too deep, and the flutes won't cut anything else. The dust is coarse- falls straight down- easy cleanup and the dust won't totally clog your vacuum filter.

When you caulk the panel in place, I recommend using fast-set clamps. Use 4 clamps, or put a piece of wood on the inside (thicker than the flange), and outside (thick enough to be stiff) of each long edge and use 2. Might be overkill, but if you've ever had a piece move after you walked away, then the adhesive locked it down in the wrong place, you'd be paranoid too.

When I purchased these I didn't realize it didn't swing open on hinges. It's plastic and snaps shut and requires a screwdriver to pry it open.

However, I couldn't find a metal hatch with hinges that was this small and fit the area I had to work in.

It provides access to the shutoff valve for my inground sprinkler, so I only need to access 2x yearly.

This is a great product that is easy to install. I have a fully finished basement with a drywall ceiling that I needed to put a few access panels in. I cut the holes and this slid right in and looks very professional. I was not looking forward to cutting in to my ceiling but with this product if I need to again I will and purchase another one of these.

I needed a small access panel when we finished our basement. I gave it a coat of paint to match our wall and it adheres great and blends in really well. It also has a very low profile. I found that I didn't even need to calk it in place since I made it a tight fit with the drywall. I just dry fit it in place and since we only access this panel maybe 1-2 times a year its been just fine. You do have to use a flat head screw driver to pry it open but its no big deal. I would buy this again.
