We missed you Frazey, but it was worth the wait...,
By
This review is from: Obadiah (Audio CD)
I've had this CD less than 2 days but it has already become one of my all time favorites. Her singing is better that ever, more rhythmic, more sultry and all of her little Frazeyisms are as good or better than ever. The music has a much more soulful groove than the Tanyas, as does the singing, and the understated electric rhythm/light lead guitar really kicks it in subtly and pushes it solidly along. You can listen to it musically, vocally, think on the lyrics whatever... it works well on any, every and all levels.
Her writing has matured. She was great before, but after a few years of the ups and downs of real adulthood experience, you really do have something more to say. I haven't heard a soul opened this widely since "Blue", "For the Roses" or "Blood on the Tracks". Sorry that she had to go through much of it, but glad that she could share it with us so beautifully. As Dylan once said about all of us who loved "Blood on the Tracks", "A lot of people tell me they enjoy that album. It's hard for me to relate to that. I mean, it, you know, people enjoying that type of pain, you know?" I would recommend that you grab this immediately, if not sooner.

I'm a Be Good Tanyas fan and was bummed when they disbanded (?). Anyhow, saw Frazey Ford was playing locally, touring behind her just released solo project. Didn't know what to expect and damn, what fine show and mesmerizing bunch of new songs. This album builds slowly, patiently and gets better with every listen. Her interest in R&B shines on many tracks. Both the melodies and the very fine lyrics just keep pulling you in. Best tracks are Lost Together, Birds of Paradise, Hey Little Mama, but they really are all quite good. Ford defies easy categorization, even moreso than the BGT, but just buy this album. You won't regret it. Sometimes it reminded me of the creative fusion of Luscious Jackson, sometimes the moodiness of the cowboy Junkies, whatever, it's very good.

Frazey has put together an awesome debut solo album from start to finish. Every song on here seems to really connect with me on so many levels. I LOVE IT. Keep up the good work Frazey!

I'm a fairly voracious music consumer, whether it be CDs, live downloads, miscellaneous other downloads (no, I've never "stolen" even one single song off the internet which an artist should have been paid for), streams, online radio (if I may digress briefly on that note, thank you KCRW for being the best), and on and on and on. Through all this, I've run across a lot of good music, but it's not often that a musician or band grabs my attention instantly with the force Frazey Ford did the first time I heard her. Some have said her voice reminds of Janice Joplin, or maybe Joni Mitchell, and a few others, but it's fair to say Ms. Ford has a voice like no one else. The ambience is hazy, sexy, and stimulating, the kind that keeps your attention from beginning to end, and there's not a bad track on the record. I'd almost be willing to guarantee you'll probably find yourself mesmerized and immersed in it after multiple spins and listens. So far, I may have heard the album in its entirety about three or four times, but can already tell it'll be spending a lot of time in my players.

Frazey Ford - Obadiah (Nettwerk)
Country-soul is a genre that's lost its way over the years. On "Obadiah", Be Good Tanyas' vocalist Frazey Ford brings it back to its roots, slowing down the delivery, making each and every syllable count. Unhurried and with genuine warmth, the songs on "Obadiah" unfurl themselves gently, bringing the listener down to their pace. Relaxing and properly soulful, make sure you get to hear "Firecracker" and Ford's perfect version of Dylan's "One More Cup Of Coffee".

Being a Dylan fan, I bought this CD for the Dylan cover (One more cup of coffee), and it is a great cover, but I was stunned by the rest of the songs. Totally unique and gorgeous, brilliant vocal stylings, excellent acoustics, lovely melodies. Unique and outstanding. Can't take it out of my CD player.

I am so in love with this album. This is great compared to the garbage on the heavy rotation on the radio. Keep up the good work!

What the angels said,
This review is from: Obadiah (Audio CD)
Don't recommend songs from this album to people because they fit an aspect of their life. The songs are too deeply personal and too emotionally drawn to not create embarrassment. I learned that the hard way (Lost Together)! Instead, recommend the album as if you are introducing someone that talks to angels, because I believe she does. Sparce but beautiful underpinning highlights her electrifying otherworldly sound, nuanced in southern twang. Her lyrics resonate with deeper meaning. Hallelujah! The sparks flew up to heaven. And when the album is done heaven is ablaze with joy.

Frazey came around my town and I am a BGT fan, so I went. I was never clear on who the Tanyas exactly were, though I listened a lot to the albums. Now I know a huge part of them is Frazey (as well as Trish Klein who plays on this album.) I agree with the other reviews. This has quickly become one of my favorite albums. No one sings like Frazey. She is deeply soulful and unique. The song writing is great and I have to second the comment about Sam's electric guitar. It's brilliantly tasteful and reserved. When you got it going on like this band, you don't need to flaunt it. It's all about the feeling. It moves me deeply. But also works very well musically. It's mesmerizing. Perfect debut. Can't wait for more.
