While this book has a lot of interesting stories, I just didn't like the style of writing. I just expected better (less boring) story-telling.

As a college student on the mainland I, like most students, have been required to read thousands of pages of text that at times puts me to sleep. This book on the other hand will do just the opposite. It will make you wonder and question what we call reality. Grant takes Hawaii's rich history of oral communication and legendary tales , and combines them with recent unexplained experiences of ordinary people to give the reader that unique feeling that comes with ghost stories. I recomend this book to anyone who loves to hear tales of odd occurances and to those readers who love to hear a a good story told by a master storyteller. The editing in this book isn't perfect and to understand all the "local" terms will take some time but it's well worth it for the supernatural enthusiast. If you're anything like me, you have a hard time looking in your rear view mirror at night or even going to sleep after reading a few of his stories.

This is a well-researched, eminently readable book. I deeply regret that I didn't know about Glen Grant's Haunted Hawaii tours when I went to the Islands several years ago. I found out about them later, and dreamed of going back to go on one -- but now that Glen has passed over, I don't know if anyone else will pick up on this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good ghost tales of Hawaii, December 17, 1997
By A Customer
I picked-up Grant's book at Honolulu International. The stories are relatively short and very entertaining. They are both narratives and introduction to the cultural basis behind folk beliefs. I was able to finish about a third of the book on my flight to San Francisco. If you would like something that can be very satisfying on a 5-8 hour flight, then this is the one to get. I would be interested in obtaining more of Grant's Chicken-skin Series tales.

5.0 out of 5 stars Read at night, and look at the skin on the back of your hand, March 29, 1999

That's what Hawaiian's call "chicken skin"! You can't read a short page like "A Strange Encounter in Lahaina, 1927" (pg.48) without feeling that these are wonderfully unvarnished, collected archeologigal gems. Photos in back are quite interesting, as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent storytelling, November 1, 2004
This review is from: Obake Files: Ghostly Encounters in Supernatural Hawaii (Chicken Skin Series) (Mass Market Paperback)
Glenn Grant's Obake Files will forever be in my book collection. I was always a fan of ghost/spooky stories since childhood and the collection of the stories presented in this book captures every spooky feeling I've felt. He is a master storyteller. This is truly a book only Hawaii residents will enjoy and thoroughly relate to.

The creepiest stories in this collection involve those relating to the faceless ghost and the calling spirits. Stories involving Hawaiian legends and specters feel like legends and I think every child raised in Hawaii should know them. The photos are creepy and believably. If anyone liked the movie "The Grudge," they will like the collection of stories in this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very much explains spirits in Hawaii!, July 16, 1998
By A Customer
Growing up in Hawai'i, I have learned of the ghostly spirits. Glen Grant writes of the legends of Hawai'i and how people who have encountered the supernatural, saw and felt. Glen also gives storytelling sessions in Waikiki and around the island. He is an excellent storyteller and I would highly recommend you buy this book! His other books are great also! Keep it up, Glen!

5.0 out of 5 stars Hawaii spooks!, August 25, 2011

Ah, what great memories! This was a classic book growing up in Hawaii. So many strange things would happen--you really had to be blind or deaf in order to not experience something. Although not all of the stories in the book are true, there were quite a few that I could relate to my own experiences. Great little read, especially if you like Halloween or Hawaiian culture. Might be a little spooky for younger readers, but definitely worth the penny I spent on it. Got it three days sooner than expected and the book still had that "New book smell." Great experience as always!
