5.0 out of 5 stars Christmas classic June 3, 2011
Format:Vinyl
My mom and dad bought this album when they first married. I LOVED this album when I was a kid! The second side was my favorite. I had the record album, the cassette, the CD and now the mp3! But why oh WHY do they leave out songs on the newer formats? The cassette, CD, and mp3 all leave out Sing of a Merry Christmas. That was one of my favorite songs on the album. If that song had not been omitted, these newer formats would be PERFECTION!

5.0 out of 5 stars Christmas in the '60s... January 4, 2014
Format:Vinyl
I grew up listening to the vinyl version of this 1964 album, whose roster is filled with an exotic array of neo-classical carols, often heavily laden with emotion.
The soft, hazy, heartwarming photo of a stylishly beehived young mother with an ethereal looking infant, purportedly, an updated take on the Madonna and Child, is the cover for Harry Simeone's excellent presentations, including his signature version of "The Little Drummer Boy", a powerful, intense, and sparkling version of "Hallelujah", an updated version of " 'Twas the Night Before Christmas" with orchestration more than highly reminiscent of an earlier one by Simeone's one-time associate, Fred Waring, a light and abbreviated version of "What Child is This?", and Side One ends with a distinct version of "Carol of the Bells".
Side 2 begins with Simeone's take on the Italian carol, "O Bambino", and then we hear, "The First Christmas Carol", followed by the calypso carol, "Mary's Little Boy Chile", a wistfully reverent and reminiscent, "Every Christmas is a Birthday", then a bouncy and delightful, contemporary orchestrated "Christmas Tree", complete with a base guitar, and a delightful chorus of children in tow, and finally, "Sing a Song of Christmas".
50 years later, this reverent gem still holds its magic, still typifying the musical stylings of its era retains a high level of appeal , and will continue to do so as years go by.
