4.0 out of 5 stars ALL the hits for $5 clams, not bad - thanks Rhino Flashback - DYBO!
As a big fan of 80s R&B supergroup STARPOINT, it was very frustating to have most of their classic 80s albums OOP on CD for years, what with their 1985 smash RESTLESS selling for upwards of $80-100 on ebay...well, now the folks at RHINO aka FLASHBACK have seen fit to compile ALL of Starpoint's most-loved hits and key LP cuts on one CD - and all for around $5 bucks...

I have to disagree with several reviewers on the excellence of this compilation. I probably need to state from the outset that I am an all out fan of Starpoint and I do recognize that with some of these "oldies", it is not so much the artistic merit as the nostalgia at play.

As a big fan of 80s R&B supergroup STARPOINT, it was very frustating to have most of their classic 80s albums OOP on CD for years, what with their 1985 smash RESTLESS selling for upwards of $80-100 on ebay...well, now the folks at RHINO aka FLASHBACK have seen fit to compile ALL of Starpoint's most-loved hits and key LP cuts on one CD - and all for around $5 bucks! Really, this is all you'll ever need - all the cuts you loved "back in the day" are present and accounted for: especially OBJECT OF MY DESIRE, WHAT YOU BEEN MISSIN, RESTLESS, HE WANTS MY BODY, and more - get it now! Sure it would be nice to have the original LPs on CD for posterity, but this'll have to do until then. Nice stuff. RIP Renee Diggs, you will be missed!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent 80's CD, February 12, 2007
This review is from: Object of My Desire & Other Hits (Audio CD)
I have been trying to get this on CD for quite a while; I think that Renee Diggs was one of the most powerful female vocalists of our time, who unfortunately didn't get the chance to prove it. My favorite songs on the CD are "The More We Love" and "Am I Still The One?" I recommend this cd to any and everyone who loves the 80's!

I'm so happy to have this CD. As an 80's kid, I loved many R&B musical bands and Starpoint was one of the hot R&B musical bands of this decade. It saddens me that in today's musical environment there aren't many R&B musical bands together and actively recording (e.g. Mint Condition, Kool & The Gang, and Earth, Wind & Fire).

After recently recylcing my Starpoint cassettes (covering their first 4 albums), I was elated to find this compilation CD because I cannot find their 4 albums (as CDs) anywhere in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. Thank you amazon.com for making my continued listening to Starpoint's music possible.

2.0 out of 5 stars Starpoint are much better than this, September 2, 2008
This review is from: Object of My Desire & Other Hits (Audio CD)
I have to disagree with several reviewers on the excellence of this compilation. I probably need to state from the outset that I am an all out fan of Starpoint and I do recognize that with some of these "oldies", it is not so much the artistic merit as the nostalgia at play.

I have leaned towards criticism rather than praise in this review because Starpoint are so much better than this compilation would suggest. Indeed, if I were to list my top 5 groups of the 80's, Starpoint would be guaranteed to make the short list! The passing of lead singer Renee Diggs in March 2005, a year after the passing of Starpoint lead artist Ernesto Phillips in March 2004, was a heartfelt loss.

I believe there are 3 shades to Starpoint. There is the incarnation responsible for the high energy tracks like "Restless", "Object of my Desire", "See the light", "So Delicious", "I'm so crazy 'bout you" and similar. Then there is the mid-tempo 'serious soul & funk' Starpoint that gave us the timeless classics like "It's all yours", "Miracle Love", "Bring Your Sweet Loving back", "Behind Your Back" and similar. Starpoint also did slow tempo and tracks like "Angel", "I got the love", "This is so right", "Something in your eyes", "All night long", "The more we love", "Try me" and similar are typical of this genre.

How one rates this compilation I guess could be down to which genre one prefers.

To be fair, this compilation does not claim to be a "best of". It is "Object of My desire and Other hits", so in this regard, the title is not entirely misleading. The compilation tries to strike a balance in selecting a good mix of various tempos but somewhat fails to deliver on choice in that it has excluded some of the huge hits that we associate with Starpoint.

The pros:

For a Starpoint CD, this one is dirt cheap and for that alone must score highly on value for money. It does feature "Object of my desire" and "restless" which were very popular tracks and would be worthy entries in a "best of" compilation.

The cons:

The number of missing hits is too high! "Behind Your back", "It's all yours", "Bring Your Sweet Loving back", "Miracle Love", "Satisfy me lover", "See the light" do not feature, and arguably, these were some of the best known Starpoint hits.

Verdict

There was a time when Startpoint CDs where next to impossible to find, and when you did find one, it cost an arm and a leg. The situation has changed now and one can find the originals on CD. That said, one needs to be careful to take note of individual album reviews and heed warnings to avoid buying CDs converted from analog sources rather than digitally remastered. The pricing on this CD makes it truly excellent value for money but it has to be said the CD has way too many Starpoint hits missing which renders this compilation somewhat hollow. If this is the only Starpoint CD in your collection, then I regret to say your search is far from over.

I have taken the liberty to include my personal and purely subjective ratings for individual Starpoint tracks across a few albums. Of course we cannot all agree! Tracks highlighted (**) are included in this compilation

I can't add much, except to say, this is a good collection - and the price is "dirt cheap" considering what people are trying to get for the original albums (on CD)! Buy this collection and you, too, can reap the maximum bang for your buck! Four stars!

For most of us, when we think of Starpoint, we think of "Object of My Desire." Nonetheless, this sextet did more than just that song...

For a budget CD, this is surprising very good & well balance with the electric funk songs starting out the collection. Besides the collection's title, there're other minor hits like "Restless", "He Wants My Body", & the Prince-like "It's So Delicious". In fact, all the upbeat songs on this collection are good. The last 4 tracks are ballads (though "What You Been Missin' is med-tempo & is a great duet between Renee Diggs & Ernesto Philips; may they both rest in peace). The only ballad I personally found to be a dud is the closer, "Till the End of Time." Diehard fans of the group may disagree, but it's just not my cup of tea.

For Starpoint fans or those seeking electric funk from the 1980s, this is a steal at just $6 (retail price).

4.0 out of 5 stars A CD that I have been looking for a long time, June 2, 2008

Like many, I am a fan of Starpoint since their 1985 album "Restless," but I was always frustrated that I could not find any of their CD's since their music was out of print. This dollar-cheap compilation is excellent as it comprises most of their easily recognizable songs (He Wants My Body, Restless, Object of My Desire, The More We Love and Till the End of Time). The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is that the CD is too short (only 10 songs) and therefore they omitted some memorable songs (I would have loved to see "Wanting You" included).

Anyway, listening to lead singer, Renee Diggs, with her dynamic and full-bodied vocals, is always a great experience. The keyboards and guitar riffs deserve close attention also. It's a pity that Renee's and Ernesto Phillips' early deaths prevent any further music from this group that had real talent and potential. Check out some of their videos on YouTube.

4.0 out of 5 stars Old School Music, August 10, 2007
This review is from: Object of My Desire & Other Hits (Audio CD)
In my search for a particular song, I discovered other songs that I loved

but had forgotten. This collection brought back memories. This cd took me

back to a time when music was real and the artist could really sing. I am

a fan of all kinds of music. But, I am mostly into R&B that expresses love. I love love music. I also love rythmic music. This cd has both. I would highly recommend it to any one who has a love for music such as I do.
