4.0 out of 5 stars Good read for managers and OO beginners, but hardly more
I will agree with the previous readers that it is an excellent book, BUT ONLY FOR TWO TYPES OF AUDIENCES: 1) programmers who have a very, very vague idea about OOD/OOP and feel intimidated and/or confused by official Microsoft Developer's Guide. 2) Project Managers who does not have clear idea how to approach the development with VFP correctly and want to get some...

3.0 out of 5 stars OOP in VFP...not always
As a new convert to VFP from clipper (on dos ack), this book did little to teach me how to use all the new powerful app building 'wizards' and whatnot. I was amused at its constant reference (even a whole chapter) of OOP concepts not included with VFP at all. If you are new to VFP this book won't help too much. If you are experienced with VFP then this book will do you...

I will agree with the previous readers that it is an excellent book, BUT ONLY FOR TWO TYPES OF AUDIENCES: 1) programmers who have a very, very vague idea about OOD/OOP and feel intimidated and/or confused by official Microsoft Developer's Guide. 2) Project Managers who does not have clear idea how to approach the development with VFP correctly and want to get some knowledge fast. I will recommend this book to the programmers familiar with OO technology ONLY AS A FAST REFRESHER COURSE, since the most of them are familiar with material in the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Living Proof that Amazon's review pages work...., January 5, 2000
This review is from: Object Orientation in Visual FoxPro (Paperback)
I had to learn Foxpro.

My IT Department couldn't (?) get the manuals. They'd installed it wrongly and the online help didn't work.

They bought me "Foxpro for Dummies".

I threw it at them. (Yes, it IS useless - they should have read the Amazon reviews.)

They bought me another book which was quite interesting but didn't help with what I needed (How do I do this? )

I bought the manuals myself but realised I needed a bit of an overview. - I mean, procedural programming is like a toy train set, but this is like Lego (and which bloody brick does the bit of code go in? )

Thank you for the reviews - this IS a good (nay, brilliant)book for anyone getting to grips with OOP - and you don't often get (rude) jokes in a book like this. If you know a bit about programming and need something to give you the bigger picture, this is it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great to shorten the learning curve to VFP's Ob.Orientation, July 5, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Object Orientation in Visual FoxPro (Paperback)
I liked it very much. It really clicked. It helped to bridge the gap from previous Fox 2.x (and XBase in general) knowledge, to getting a handle in the concepts of Object Orientation, and Visual Foxpro's implementation of it

I highly recommend it to anybody that wants to jump from the XBase world into the Visual, OO world

4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent introductory book, but not just that., February 4, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Object Orientation in Visual FoxPro (Paperback)

Drawing on the best of two other books I used to recommend, this is a great book for those moving to Visual FoxPro.

It combines the clarity of explanation of David Taylor's "Object Oriented Technoogy: A Manager's Guide" with the design principles and CRC approach from Rebecca Wirfs-Brock (et al) "Designing Object Oriented Software".

With the benefit for Visual FoxPro programmers of examples in the FoxPro language instead of C++ or Smalltalk

Very easy to read. You get the basic idea and concepts of Object Orientation in no time. Although you will need a more advanced book later, it is better to read this one first.
