4.0 out of 5 stars Another step ahead... November 6, 2012
Format:Audio CD
As a fan of the band since 1992 when they released their debut album, I was eager to listen to their eight studio release (many critics and specialized press tend to ignore 'Vale Callampa', an essential work in my opinion) after learning of the recording process they had chosen for this particular release.

Based on the premise that the songs from every band's first album are first listened in their concerts, before the bands are even signed, Ruben suggested to change the recording process and the idea evolved into performing the album live in front of an audience in four different countries, 2 different sessions in each country: Argentina, Chile, Mexico and USA. This is how after 5 years without releasing an original album, and produced by Gustavo Santaolalla, 'El objeto antes llamado disco' was born; the name was suggested as a joke by Ruben, a joke everyone else seemed to like.

So how does the experiment work? The resulting album is a set of ten quite irregular (but not bad) songs; while the idea may not be new (Jorge Drexler in 'Amar la trama' and La Barranca in 'El fluir' come to mind as examples of this experiment been done before) the resulting album is quite unique in many senses, one thing you will immediately note is that this process affected the singer the most, you can hear them gasping and catching their breath in between lines of a song.

The album opens with 'Pajaros' and an unfortunate falsetto attempt from Ruben and Emmanuel. Since its release date, 'De este lado del camino' gave me mixed feelings, the song is a very good one but I never got to like the lyrics, I can understand though why it was chosen as the single as it is quite reminiscent of the style from prior albums, it sounds familiar.

5.0 out of 5 stars Proof that fantastic music is alive and well. November 19, 2012
By Boony
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Let me get this out of the way first and foremost, Cafe Tacvba is the best band in the world at the moment. That being said, you have to appreciate the musical work not only because it is FANTASTIC, but because a band of this caliber could be putting out commercial tracks to make TONS OF $$$.... yet they're staying true to their original objective, which is to do THEIR THING and put out quality tunes.

I was expecting a bunch of "rock-ish" style tracks on this album and was pleasantly surprised that they have done it to me once again; blown my mind into another musical direction of space! ....another dimension..... This reminds me of 'Reves/Yo Soy,' which was dismissed by critics (pfft!....what do they know?!), yet continues to be one of their most creative albums.

I just sat through my first listen and it was EXCELLENT.

Well done Tacubitos ;)

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent and expansive record October 29, 2012
Format:Audio CD
Listening to a new Cafe Tacvba record is always a rewarding process. Just like another famous contemporary band, they reward us with unexpected treats that go beyond and around anything we have learned to believe as normalcy in their music.

El Objeto Antes Llamado Disco was delivered in unannounced fashion: little marketing only preceded by an intimate tour and snippets of new music posted everywhere in social media. It is their most introspective work and sonically the most cohesive, a fantastic mix of rock, electronica and Mexican folk that bursts in its timeless appeal.

The underlying theme is self acceptance and love. Gripping lead single De este lado del camino is an ode to fulfillment and joy, whereas the folk-inspired Espuma is a simple delight that bounces back from the reflective mood of the aforementioned track. Aprovechate and Olita de Altamar are the closest they get to a conventional pop song and two that would deserve top air play.

There is not much one can say about El Objeto without tampering the immersing experience. Trying to dissect the cryptic lyrics would result in a pointless depiction of mundane topics that strung together make sense in a bigger scheme. The shorter length of El Objeto makes more evident the vocal range that still features Ruben as their frontman but jumps back and forth between instruments and a beautiful soundscape.

If I had one little complaint about the quartet's seventh studio album, is the short 38:57 minutes of pleasure it gives us. They have matured so gracefully and are so vibrant twenty years into their career, it is almost unfathomable that they keep their craft so fresh, so relevant. All we can do is look forward to new material and to discover this one drop by drop.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cafe Tacuba! October 24, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I think this is a very solid album... I have been listening to it for a couple of days, and it gets better every time I listen to it.
Might be my favorite from this band, not sure yet.
Andamios, Tan Mal and Volcan are great songs, but I generally like all the songs.

Like always talented artists with their authentic music sound. Tacuva blends their original sounds with a twist of modern art sounds.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hidden Gem? April 27, 2013
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
For some reason I never heard about the release of this album, but what a surprise!
I can't find any song in here that is "skippable." Every one of them is good enough to not be considered "filler."
They have certainly changed and the songs are pretty different from previous albums, but isn't that what makes them great?
