Oboe Wizardry, May 18, 2010
This review is from: Oboe Wizardry (Audio CD)
Mark Weiger has both tone and technique to convincingly showcase this challenging, yet touching music for oboe.
The two virtuosic Lalliet pieces by themselves justify the album's purchase price. The melodies within
"Fantasie on Flotow's Martha" are played in heart-rending manner amidst the fireworks. Then there are those
knock-your-hat-off Carnival of Venice variations...better than a hot fudge sundae! Weiger renders stunning
nuances and perfect transients throughout the entire program. Sonics are well-balanced, with Arthur Rowe's piano
balanced just right, nicely framing Weiger's exquisite playing. (It must be nice never having to breathe.)
This collection deserves highest praise, and will likely become one of which you'll never tire.
