Melodic Surf Rock Goodness,
By Brandon Hagen (Arlington, Wa) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Observatory (Audio CD)
Warning: Observatory is a very catchy cd. Like a breath of fresh air Cadet caught me off guard and now I'm addicted. Cadet play a blend of upbeat alternative/punk pop style similar to Weezer, Phantom Planet, Rooney (Cadet is way better than Rooney by the way) and in some ways Switchfoot. Cadet doesn't sound like a cheap knock off of the aforementioned bands, they have a melodic surf style cool enough to call their own.
The lead singer has a nice variety to his voice, complimented by the band's excellent musicianship. "Blame" sounds similar to Del Amitri, "Stuck in a Song" reminds me of Jars of Clay, and on "Two Stars" the singer sounds dead-on like Rivers Cuomo of Weezer. Christopher Stevens did an excellent job producing the band's variety of sound. No filler here, all the tracks are excellent, well written, and the entire album flows together perfectly. Observatory is one of those albums to listen to on a sunny summer day or on a rainy day in need of some cheering up. Highly recommended for fans of any of the bands mentioned above. It's truly a shame bands as talented as Cadet aren't more well known, I'm just glad I was lucky enough to get in on the action.

a bit lighter rock, but the songs are awesome. they have the same sound as relient k, except minus the punk. they have great harmonies. even has a remix bonus track
[although i dont like switchfoot...well at least "learning to breathe" was bad]

And at the end of the long final song, you'll find a hidden techno/dance mix of "Hightide!"
Great album, wonderfully produced, doesn't "try too hard" and it is a pleasure to listen to over and over and over! Good stuff!
