About the Author

Harriet Martineau (1802–1876) authored Society in America (1837) and Retrospect of Western Travel (1838), which are considered to be major analyses of American life.

Michael R. Hill is an interdisciplinary scholar, the editor of Sociological Origins, and a senior sociology Tutor/Mentor in the Department of Athletics at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He is the author of Archival Strategies and Techniques and is the award-winning editor/co-editor of several volumes on Harriet Martineau and Charlotte Perkins Gilman. He is a past chair of the American Sociological Association’s Section on the History of Sociology.
