Exellent hands-on guide,

Provides answers to the question- how do I try to help someone with OCD without hurting myself? At the OC Foundation national headquarters we literally receive thousands of inquiries for help from families trying to cope with a loved one's OCD. This is the first book that addresses this difficult topic and remains one of our most recommended book for families living with OCD.

For years our family didn't know how to deal with this problem. It seemed like anything we did could set off my sons ocd. This book showed us what we could do (and couldn't do) to help.At times the book has a hard edge to it And gives advice that some people rather not hear, but our family needed to read & hear what was written, and as a result we are all doing better. A must if someone with ocd is making you crazy.A grateful reader from: The Bronx, NY

This is a great book. It is short, and gets right to the point. It has helped me and my family greatly.

Five Stars. Superb! Short and to the point. I plan to order a second book for someone in our family who really needs it. Anyone who has lived with this knows how hard it can be to watch someone you love suffering. This was the only book that told us what to do to stop the OCD from taking over our lives. People who are ill with OCD may not like the changes the family has to make--but in the end we are all doing better as a result. A winner!

THIS BOOK IS BAD!,
By McKinley (USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Obsessive Compulsive Disorder: A Survival Guide For Family And Friends (Paperback)
This book gave ZERO help. I bought it to give to my in-laws as a "basic" info book aobut OCD. i would have sent them screaming away if they ever had a chance to read it. It is all about the "steps" of AA (alcohol annon) and NOT about OCD. DONT BUY THIS! IT STINKS! (I will send you my copy free! Save your money!)

Useless!!! Non-specific to OCD, no useful information,

This book should really be billed as a very elementary guide to exploring one's emotions about illness in the family. It was very new-agey, with no useful information about either OCD or family issues. I returned it.

I have personally recommended this book to many families struggling with a loved one's OCD. In a caring, but firm way, Roy shows families how to recover from the battleground that can be OCD. If you love someone that has OCD, this book can make a difference. Jeannette Cole, Deputy Director Obsessive-Compulsive Foundation, Inc.

As the title suggests this book is written as a guide and it accomplishes just that. The book is focused entirely on solution, no surprise considering who the author is.The book is a must for those family and friends who need help in understanding this powerful disease. The book details useful tools that the reader can use to help themselves and in turn help those suffering. From front to back this book is written with one purpose in mind service!!!!

Reading this book (a very quick read, by the way) helped me a fair amount. I was glad to read that the emotions I've experienced and the mistakes I've made coping with someone who has OCD are normal--and it gave some good tips for working through the negativity, not letting the OCD dictate how both of you live and trying to focus on controlling your own emotions, not the emotions of the person with the OCD.
What I didn't love is toward the end especially, the book basically takes the "12 Steps" Alcoholics Anonymous program, barely adjusts it and applies it to living with someone with OCD. This was a detriment in two ways: one, I could have easily looked up the Al-Anon 12 Steps and applied them myself, without the book's help (I've had a harder time finding resources for loved ones of people with OCD, which is why I sought out a book). Two, the 12 Steps program relies heavily on a spiritual component. The author of this book tries to throw a bone here and there to those who aren't comfortable with the spiritual component, but the message is clear: believe in the Higher Power, as it's the only way to properly completing all the steps, which, the book claims, is the only way to finding peace in this situation. Trying to once in a while adjust a step for someone not comfortable with the spiritual aspect ("try praying, just for today, even if you don't fully believe" or "trust your support group as your Higher Power [one, I don't have access to a support group and two, it's not quite the same as a Higher Power...]") just doesn't completely pan out. But I appreciate the author's attempt to include those who aren't comfortable, it just doesn't quite work. |
